  5. An evening talk with Daniel Greenwood of London Wildlife Trust looking at the amazing world of London's bats Join London Wildlife Trust for an evening discussing the world of bats at Rye Books. The talk will be given by Sydenham Hill Wood Conservation Officer Daniel Greenwood with a focus on the variety of local bats found in the area. Sydenham Hill Wood is one of the largest remaining remnants of the Great North Wood, a landscape of woods and commons which originated from the wildwood that colonised after the end of the last Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. This means that an interesting range of bats have been present at Sydenham Hill Wood and the surrounding woods for centuries. Targeted conservation work is undertaken at Sydenham Hill Wood by London Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers to enhance habitats for these declining animals. All our data suggests the work is succeeding, reflecting general stabilised populations of some species in the UK. Bats also have a fascinating relationship to humans which is reflected in literature and wider culture, namely in Bram Stoker's Dracula and the TV, film and comic book franchise, Batman. This is a free event, space is limited so places will be given on a first come first served basis. Coffee, Tea & Cake will be available! Best wishes, All at Rye Books If you have any Q's regarding the event please call us on 020 581 1850 Rye Books, 45 Upland Road, London, SE22 9EF

  7. Thursday 11th June, 7pm at Rye Books Local author James Wilson will be in conversation with literary agent Anna Power discussing his new novel ?Summer Of Broken Stories?, a powerful novel of friendship, rebellion and betrayal. England, 1950s. While out playing in the woods, ten-year-old Mark meets a man living in an old railway carriage. Despite his wild appearance, the stranger, who introduces himself as Aubrey Hillyard, is captivating ? an irreverent outsider who is shunned by Mark?s fellow villagers, and a writer to boot. Aubrey encourages Mark to tell stories about his own make-believe world, and in return he informs the boy about a novel he is writing ? a work of ominous science fiction. As the meddling villagers plot to drive Aubrey out, Mark finds himself caught between two worlds ? yet convinced that he must help Aubrey prevail at any cost. Dealing with powerful themes of friendship, rebellion and betrayal, The Summer of Broken Stories is James Wilson?s long-awaited new novel. ?Wilson has a gifted, original voice.? The Daily Telegraph ?This book is so subtle, so moving, so intelligent ? it does knock spots off almost everything else around.? Derek Beaven, author of Acts of Mutiny. 11. Thursday 19th March 7pm at Rye Books, Richard 'Bugman Jones' will be discussing his fascinating new book 'House Guests, House Pests : A Natural History of Animals in the Home' An alarming number of creatures live off us and our homes. But how did these visitors originate? Today we live in snug, well-furnished houses surrounded by the trappings of a civilised life. But we are not alone - we suffer a constant stream of unwanted visitors. Our houses, our food, our belongings, our very existence are under constant attack from a host of invaders eager to take advantage of our shelter, our food stores and our tasty soft furnishings. From bats in the belfry to beetles in the cellar, moths in the wardrobe and mosquitoes in the bedroom, humans cannot escape the attentions of the animal kingdom. Nature may be red in tooth and claw, but when it's our blood the bedbugs are after, when it's our cereal bowl that's littered with mouse droppings, and when it's our favourite chair that collapses due to woodworm in the legs, it really brings it home the fact that we and our homes are part of nature too. This book represents a 21st century version of the classic mediaeval bestiary. It poses questions such as where these animals came from, can we live with them, can we get rid of them, and should we? ?Amiable but authoritative ... exceptionally readable, but imbued with a powerful sense that 'Bugman Jones' is a man who'd discuss tapeworms enthusiastically at dinner.? ? BBC Wildlife Book of the Month [bugmanjones.com] FREE EVENT If you have questions or any creatures that need identifying please bring them along! Coffee, Tea, and Cake will be on sale Hope you can make it! Best wishes, All at Rye Books For more info please contact: [email protected] Tel. 020 3581 1850

  19. Thursday 16th Oct. 7.00pm at Rye Books Join author and science writer Philip Ball acclaimed author of 'The Music Instinct' 'Curiosity' and 'Serving The Reich' for a talk on his latest book 'Invisible: the dangerous allure of the unseen' Please click/or cut&paste this link eepurl.com/5MjCH If you could be invisible, what would you do? The chances are that it would have something to do with power, wealth or sex. Perhaps all three. But there?s no need to feel guilty. Impulses like these have always been at the heart of our fascination with invisibility: it points to realms beyond our senses, serves as a receptacle for fears and dreams, and hints at worlds where other rules apply. Invisibility is a mighty power and a terrible curse, a sexual promise, a spiritual condition. This is a history of humanity?s turbulent relationship with the invisible. It takes on the myths and morals of Plato, the occult obsessions of the Middle Ages, the trickeries and illusions of stage magic, the auras and ethers of Victorian physics, military strategies to camouflage armies and ships and the discovery of invisibly small worlds. From the medieval to the cutting-edge, fairy tales to telecommunications, from beliefs about the supernatural to the discovery of dark energy, Philip Ball reveals the universe of the invisible. Free event Refreshments available We hope you can make it! Best wishes, All at Rye Books Rye Books, 45 Upland Rd, SE22 9EF Tel:0203 581 1850 email:[email protected]

  25. Thursday 12th June 7.00pm at Rye Books Journalist & author Will Hodgkinson will be reading from 'The House Is Full Of Yogis' The House Is Full Of Yogis is a witty memoir about the trials of adolescence, the tribulations of family life and the embarrassment that ensues from having larger-than-life parents Neville and Liz Hodgkinson bought into the Thatcherite dream of home ownership, aspiration and advancement. The first children of their working class parents to go to university and have professional careers, they lived in a semi-detached house in Richmond, sent their sons Tom and Will to private school, and went on holiday to Greece once a year. Neville was an award-winning science writer and Liz was a high-earning tabloid hack. Then a disastrous boat holiday, followed by a life-threatening bout of food poisoning from a contaminated turkey, led to the search for a new way of life. Nev joined the Brahma Kumaris, who believe evolution is a myth, time is circular, and a forthcoming Armageddon will make way for a new Golden Age. Out went drunken dinner parties and Victorian d?cor schemes; in came large women in saris meditating in the living room and lurid paintings of smiling deities on the walls. Liz took the arrival of the Brahma Kumaris as a chance to wage all-out war on convention, from announcing her newfound celibacy on prime time television to writing books that questioned the value of getting married and raising children. By an unfortunate coincidence, this dramatic and highly public transformation of the self coincided with the onset of Will?s adolescence. This is his story. ?I laughed until I levitated?
