  1. Horniman Kids Sleepover Saturday 8 December, 7pm to Sunday 9 December, 10am Join us after hours for the Horniman?s very first sleepover! Come to the Museum once the public have left, and the Walrus is tucked up in bed, to explore the Horniman by night. Roll out your sleeping bag and camp out in the galleries, next to a dodo, or even a tiger. The evening will be full of fun activities and exciting exploration such as storytelling, crafts and trails. A light breakfast is included in the morning, plus hot drinks for the adults. Please bear in mind that this will be a very exciting experience and therefore you may not get much sleep on the night! Tickets are ?60 per adult or child. Suitable for children aged 5-11 only. Each child must be accompanied by one adult.   2. Being Late Thursday 18 October, 6.30-9.30pm Horniman Museum and Gardens, Forest Hill Come and enjoy the Horniman after hours with a special evening of live music, workshops and more. Set designers Abby and Alice will transform the Horniman with botanical-inspired installations to tie in with the theme of the night - human beings? relationship with the natural world. You can take part in a collective art workshop to reveal a mysterious painting, have your fortune told by a spiritual medium and watch a new science-fiction video work in which a mysterious occurrence has transformed the Horniman?s much loved Natural History Gallery. We also have a great line-up of live music featuring alternative musician Paddy Steer, Neo Afro Folk artist The Venus Bushfires and folk singer-songwriters Bity Booker, Cunning Folk and Marisa, Jack & Davy. Plus don?t miss your exclusive opportunity to visit The Lore of the Land exhibition before it officially opens on 20 October, the first in the Horniman?s new arts space The Studio. The World @ Your Feet Saturday 8 September, 6.30-8.30pm Horniman Museum and Gardens Young people aged 14-19 years - join us for a special World Gallery event featuring live performance, storytelling, international dessert tasting, costume photo booth and mini-tours! The recently opened World Gallery is a new display of over 3,000 objects from around the world that celebrates creativity and explores what it means to be human. This event is organised and run by young people for young people aged 14?19 years. Free entry but there are limited spaces so arrive early. Come and explore - the world is at your feet! Join us at the Horniman for the closing festival of our Shared World season with a free day celebration of global cultures, including carnival parades, Turkish folk music, Balkan dance beats, North African Gnawa sounds and pop-up dance performances. There will be live music on the Bandstand, carnival performances around the Gardens, workshops to make fruity floral headdresses or cress houses, food, facepainting and more.   5. Arts Award Summer School for Young People Monday 6 - Friday 10 August Horniman Museum and Gardens Calling all young people! Get creative, learn new skills and earn an Arts Award qualification this summer. If you are aged 14-19, the Horniman is offering you an exciting opportunity to participate in a week long programme of creative workshops from 6-10 August, while working towards a Level 1 accredited Bronze Arts Award. Alongside the organisation Tiger Monkey UK, each day you will explore the Museum, and get creative using mediums such as video, sculpture, radio, drawing and painting. You do not need any previous arts experience - this is an opportunity to get inspired, learn new skills and go on a creative journey. The Arts Award Summer School is free with lunch and travel expenses included. This opportunity is open to anyone who is interested, and priority is given if you are out-of-school or on pupil premium. Horniman Christmas Market Thursday 7 December, 5.30-9.30pm Free entry The Horniman Museum and Gardens is holding a special late night Christmas shopping experience with gorgeous gifts, craft beer, mulled wine, workshops and your favourite festive tunes. Pick-up perfect presents ranging from beautiful accessories to organic skincare products from dozens of local designers and makers, and enjoy some craft beer as the London Brewers? Market take over the Conservatory with 10 craft breweries. We'll also have festive tunes from live DJs, winter songs from the Raise the Roof choir, and food and cocktails in the Cafe.   8. Some of you may have noticed the scaffolding around the Horniman or noticed that we have a couple of galleries closed. We have been working on developing a new World Gallery, celebrating what it means to be human. It will include more than 3,000 objects from around the world, works of art and fun things to touch, play with and even smell. We want the World Gallery to be a place of inspiration for visitors of all ages, to promote tolerance, respect and empathy. Attached are a couple of artist impressions.   9. Hi everyone Horniman Museum and Gardens here. Yes, we have taken over the running of the Farmer?s Market two weeks ago and have just appointed someone who will be running the Market, working with the stallholders and telling people what they can expect from week to week online and around the Horniman site. I will certainly pass on your comments about lactose free drinks to her, as well as the other comments in this thread. We are really excited about bringing the Market in house and you will be hearing more about the Market very soon. In the meantime if you have any comments about what you would like to see (like Bobbsy's lactose free milk) please do drop us a line at [email protected] and we will see what we can do.

Project Morrinho Horniman Museum and Gardens, 100 London Road, SE23 3PQ Tuesday 21 June - 1pm-4pm Wednesday 22 June - 2.30pm-5.30pm We?re looking for people to help us create a miniature favela in front of the Horniman library as part of Project Morrinho. Activities will include painting, carving, breaking the bricks and placing them in the overall structure. The Project Morrinho Horniman Favela will stay in place throughout the summer as part of the Horniman?s Festival of Brasil, and this workshop is a great opportunity to get involved in the Festival. All workshops will be taking place in the Gardens and will be outdoors. No specialist skills are needed but you will need to dress appropriately for the weather and for working outdoors, such as wearing sturdy shoes and clothes that may get dirty. Unfortunately the workshop is not suitable for children under 12 years old. The workshop is free but booking is essential. Sunday 30 August 12-6pm Free entry If you?re staying local this weekend, don?t miss Africarnival, the last of our African Summer events - which promises to be a colourful celebration of our African season featuring circus performers, dancing, music, exuberant carnival parades and workshops. We also have African street food including Ghanaian cuisine. For the carnival parade, Mandinga Arts, one of the performers, has been working with a number of community partners and artists to create extraordinary costumes, masks and puppets inspired by the African collections at the Horniman. You can see a preview of what they?ve created on our blog.   12. African Late Thursday 6 August, 6.30-9.30pm We?ve been looking forward to this Thursday?s after-hours event for a while! Join us for food, drink and performances inspired by the rich culture of Africa and the African Diaspora including the premiere of two new dance works specially commissioned for African Late. Throughout the evening experience atmospheric live music, beautiful dance in the Gardens, films and documentaries by young African filmmakers, stories in the galleries, street performances and tours. It?s another great chance to explore the Museum and Gardens without children and to kick back and relax with friends. The Caf? and bars will be open, and African street food available. Jazz Picnics Horniman Museum and Gardens Bandstand Terrace Every Thursday, 9 ? 30 July, 6.30-8.30pm Chill out to free jazz concerts during sunset with a drink in a deck chair and view over London at the Horniman. This year our popular Jazz Picnic series explores the mesmerising sounds of African jazz, from Afro blues to Afrobeat. The Horniman Caf? will be open on the Bandstand serving a selection of food and drink. Thursday 9 July: Abdoulaye Samb & Minnjiaraby Minnjiaraby is a band founded by Senegalese guitarist Abdoulaye Samb. Their music is inspired by Fula and Mandinka cultures, and interwoven with Rumba, Mbalax, Afro-Latin and deep blues. Find out more Thursday 16 July: Seeds of Creation Legendary Seddik Zebiri from Algeria and his multicultural band Seeds of Creation play an intriguing blend of traditional Berber music with Reggae, Jazz, Afro Blues and raw Psychedelic sounds that will transport you from South London deep into the heart of the Sahara. Find out more. Thursday 23 July: Namvula Folk and urban music traditions from Namvula?s Zambian homeland blend with sounds from her Scottish roots and London?s vibrant eclectic music scene. Namvula is backed by a stellar band of some of the UK?s most respected African and jazz musicians, including Mercury nominated bassist Liran Donin and saxophonist Chris Williams, percussionist Mamadou Sarr and guitarist Jack Ross. We?re looking for a part-time Facilities Assistant to help support the Horniman?s busy and successful public events programme and commercial operation. Duties include setting up and maintaining equipment, troubleshooting basic technical and facilities issues and ensuring that our spaces meet the highest standards in terms of presentation. Practical experience of working in a facilities type role is required as well as a flexible approach to tasks and working hours. Core hours are Friday 9-5pm and remaining hours are flexible.   20. Hi there, For those that are interested, here is some information about the Horniman's Pond Dipping sessions this summer. You can also see further details on our website at: www.horniman.ac.uk/visit/events/nature-explorers-pond-dipping-582 The Pond Dipping sessions run every Tuesday during the summer holidays at: 11am ? 12pm 1.15pm ? 2.15pm 3pm ? 4pm Tickets are ?2 per child (accompanying adults are free) and can be bought from the Horniman's Ticket Desk on the day. Places are limited. The session is not suitable for children under 5 and is not accessible for buggies due to steps and uneven ground. The Nature Trail leading to the pond is approximately one mile round and is at the bottom of the Horniman Gardens, a fair walk from the Museum. There are no facilities on the Nature Trail. Details are also on our website www.horniman.ac.uk We run other sessions involving the Nature Trail and pond on an ad hoc basis, please check our website for details. Hello, here is an update about a photography competition that you might like to enter which the Art Fund are organising to celebrate the Museum of the Year 2013 Prize. ************** Can you take a winning photograph of the Horniman? To celebrate 2013?s Prize, the Art Fund are also organising a photography competition. The best shot representing each of the ten finalists will be chosen by the Art Fund and the winning photograph will then be decided by a public vote. We?re looking for innovative, atmospheric and humorous shots that creatively capture the spirit of the Horniman, from a stunning exterior to your favourite object.   24. We are one of ten finalists in the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2013, the largest UK arts prize at ?100,000. The Prize highlights the innovative and creative ways that museums bring objects and collections to life, looking specifically at 2012 activities. Being a finalist is a real tribute, and we want to thank you all for helping this to happen. Your continued visits and support over the years have enabled the Museum to go from strength to strength. The winner will be announced live on BBC Radio 4's Front Row programme on 4 June, so remember to tune in!
