former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi first mate, Please follow this link to explore all the documentation for the Dulwich Community Council meeting last week when applications decided: http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=176&MId=4721 Iceland site latest planning permission. I've not seen anything come through yet and also drawn a blank searching on the council planning portal. -

Hi first mate, Chesterfield Grove. Some residents submitted a Cleaner., Greener, Safer capital project idea to repave all the pavements, improving streets lighting, removing some tree pits. The estimate cost alone for repaving pavements in tarmac was ?80,000, using paving slabs ?120,000. Our CGS capital budget would have been entirely swallowed with either option. But the bid asked about tree root trip hazards. We can afford to upgrad ethe street lighting to white light making any trip hazard more visible and we can afford some money to address the worst tree root hazard and fixing individual treet pit issues. Total cost of these is ?6,000 and ?4,000 respectively. -

Hi newguy42, This is the ethos of our new Harris free school: "Whatever a child?s background or starting point, we want to make sure that they finish Year 6 with the academic skills, social skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Every lesson at our school will be creative and there will be plenty of time for children to think, to play, to discover and wonder. Each child will be taught in the way that suits them best and we will step in quickly if a change is needed. For some children, this might involve one-to-one support if they are finding something difficult and for others it could mean stretching them more to keep them interested. Our school will be relaxed and comfortable but pupils will know that good behaviour is expected of them. They will be frequently praised and rewarded for trying their best and for being kind, hard-working and well-behaved. We want the School to feel friendly and welcoming and will always make sure that every pupil has at least one friend. Our children will be taught to respect each other and their teachers. There will be a zero tolerance approach to any type of bullying." I'm not an educationalist but this seems a good ethos to me. -

The former East Dulwich Police station covers the same amount of land as Heber School, Goose Green School. Both schools appear thriving talking to parents. So the area looks ok. -

Hi EDSE22, KK, Yes, it is very unsightly. I've tried making contact witht he owner with no success a couple of years ago. I'm amazed anyone could afford to leave things like that rather than making some money from it. KK is right I brelieve the upper floors are lived in by the owner. -

Hi david_carnell, I read that as well. But I don't think Ofsted are that stupid. Also if you analyse the articlae numbers we're talking aobut 4 people starting and not finishing. Schools in urvan areas have huge flux and the academies are largely taking over failing schools in urban areas. Hi EDSE22, Sorry you feel that. They've agreed targets of being in the top 10% for attainment and progression and Ofsted outstanding schools. This would be better than any other local school accepted Dulwich Hamlet from memory. -

Lateast news is the permanent site for the East Dulwich Harris free primary school will be the former East Dulwich Police which has been sold to the Education Finance Agency. The land area is about the same size as Heber School and Goose Green School. This is brilliant news. With a permanent site for September 2015 it makes the opening of this school on a temporary site this Setepmber 2014 no longer a gamble for parents. As the school admissions for the first year runs in parallel to the main Southwakr admissions process parents have nothing to lose applying for both and then chosing which of the two places they wish to take up. -

Hi KK, I'm afraid I don't know about the Lister centre. Bit away from East Dulwich. Hi nigello, Thanks, am on the case. Housing officer has come back to me already saying they're on the case. Hi Malleymoo, That is odd. You'd have thought the Police had their evidence. On the case and have reported it. -

Eaery year local ward councillors get to decide how to spend some devolved Cleaner, Greener, Safer budget. The scheme started when Lib Dems first led the council in 2002 with only one year when it didn?t operate when the Labour administration wanted to use the money on pet Olympic projects. I?m particularly excited by the prospect of improving the junction of North Cross Road with Lordship Lane. It?s one of our crash hot spots, doesn?t work well when closed for the street market on Saturdays. The Bike hangars will be a great experiment to see if they can work locally in East Dulwich ? fingers crossed. And lastly trialling the Dulwich Hospital phlebotomy service on Saturdays. IT should really make it much easier for people to have blood tests outside of normal work hours and provide a real alternative to being at the hospital before 7am weekdays. This year East Dulwich councillors have decided to allocate the following: CGS capital: - ED Crime Prevention fund ?10,000 - ED street trees ?10,000 - Lordship Lane secure derelict property ?4,500 - Chesterfield ?6,000 for upgrading street lighting to white light, ?4,000 for pavement tree pit upgrading. - Bike hangars ? fund 2 to be decided where most popular by residents ?10,000 - East Dulwich Community Centre (EDCC) children garden area materials ?524 - Bassano Street gating ?2,000 - Dawson Heights tree planting ?1,000 - Upgrade junction of NCR/LL ?50,000 - ED public Automated Emergency Defibrillators ?5,000 - Historic photos project ?4,500 Total ?112,524 CGS revenue: - Give and take EDCC events ?1,500 - Goose Green nursery improvements ?1,400 - EDCC gardening ?700 - WW2 plaques across Dulwich ?667 - Street cleaning machine extra half-time employee ?11,605 - Saturday Dulwich Hospital blood testing trial x 26 weeks (as per separate email) ?20,000 Total ?35,872 -

Man knocking on door at 1am asking for money
James Barber replied to JLJ's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We had knocking late at night when in bed. I ignored it. Next thing we hear was the front door being kicked down. I charged them and not sure who was more scared them or me. I chased them naked to the fornt gate. REalised thier was two of them running away and I was naked and about to leave my family with no working front door. Police were brilliant. So I will now always answer under such circumstance. But front behind a chain. HAd manchester and London bars added so hopefully no one will every successfully kick the door in again. But I still get andgry and anxious about it. -

Hi titch juicy, Is that the Surrey Canal cycle/footpath? -
To ensure proper scrutiny on planning application 13/AP/3205 that appears to be driving this problem East Dulwch ward councillors Rosie Shimell and myself have requested the planning decision be decided by a committee of councillors IF council planning officers are minded to grant planning permission. Will keep people posted how this goes.

But ITATM we're not talking about another Harris School so not sure why the post here - despite being interesting. hi mamafeelgood, Very nearly half way for the level of support needed. So far very limited campaign. Hope to scale it up in the next few weeks, ask parents to form a steering committee and then select a provider to work with.

Hi P68, I would be amazed if the what the school is doing is only one of masny actions they're taking to try and fix this problem. I find it near impossible now to naigate the GP system and get appointments even when a GP is telling me to book another appointment. So I really sympathise with parents trying to comply. It's a real shame the school has felt compelled to do this. I would suggest a culture needs to change amongst a minority of parents. I would counsel we all wait and see how it pans out and feels for parents and whether it goes some way to solving the problem.
