  1. Officers have kindly just told me: " Dear Councillor Barber Thank you for your initial email of 6 December concerning the bollards at the junction of Adys Road and Nutbrook Street. I apologise for the delay in a response but I am awaiting certain information to provide a comprehensive response to your query. In the last five months, we have undertaken eight individual bollard repairs at this location at a cost of ?650. Prior to this there was only one repair in March 2012 at a cost of ?105. I am currently awaiting a response from our Road Safety team as to when the junction safety scheme (raised table and build outs) was installed, and whether a Stage 4 Safety Audit was undertaken after the scheme had been in operation for a certain time to evaluate the effectiveness and any associated problems. There are potential alternatives to the bollard replacement but I would wish to check on their applicability with the Road Safety team before undertaking any permanent changes. Obviously, removing the bollard and allowing vehicles to over-run the footway would increase the potential hazard to pedestrians. Providing a greater turning area for vehicles exiting Nutbrook Street by moving back the kerbline would presumably negate the effect of the safety scheme, and could only be achieved at a significant cost. A further option is the replacement of the full height bollard with a bell type bollard. I will respond further with our intended solution to the problem once I have received a response as outlined above. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact me if you should require any further information. 2. Would it make sense for Southwark to officially adopt that seciton of road?
  3. To encourage these changes tell the consultation manager : [email protected]
  4. Facinating if unsurprising article on the BBS News website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-25415231#story_continues_2 In essence 32% of parents with a profession have moved to an area they consider to have a good school. Many of those responding, I havent tabulated them yet, have said they are planning to move out of the area for good senior schools. Also had feedback from others saying the same about primary schools.
  5. Hi SebsC, The emergency Thames Water works at the southern end Upland Road: " The permit was originally raised to repair a leak on a 6in main in the carriageway, on excavating Thames Water discovered the leak was in fact from the 42in trunk main. This repair required a specialist clamp to be manufactured, once fitted the reinstatement of the area can begin. Because of the size and depth of reinstatement required Thames Water expect to have all works completed and the road reopened to traffic on 23rd Dec. "
  6. The site should be used for community use - as it was when a police station. Certainly in planning terms their would be a presumption for any piurchaser choosing to apply for planning permission for a non community use to prove no community use needs exists. IF it were to be sold for non community use, and I'm anticipating it wont be, then we would have ample proof of real community use needs and planning permission I hope would be refused on this basis.
  7. I've chased but still don't have any news...yet.
  8. Hi ITATM, Yes, they receive some money to set-up as academies. Also negotiating asset transfers from LA's can be complicated. Regards james.
  9. Hi monica, My understanding is that circa summer 2015 the current Grove Vale library shop units will revert to their freeholder. They are rented by Southwark Council. I'm hopeful the reduction in rent will enable the new grove vale library to be open more often.
  10. Many thanks fazer71. I hadn't appreciated that.
  11. Hi polla2256, A worried lady has contacted me. Two of those box lorries are owned by two seperate neighbours. Those lorries represent their livelihoods. They make a point of parking NOT outside people homes. They are incurring a great deal of expense and hassle with idiots painting graffiti on these lorries. If anyone spots this happeneing please call 999. Hope this helps. Hi DulwichBorn&Bred, No I've not and have chased.
  12. What a great idea. Where in Lambeth? Sure some great spots in Herne Hill for a new school.
  13. Yes Academies do get more per pupil than schools reporting directly to local authorities. But that is largely related to the academy schools not being provided support services by the LA's. LA's get a large pot of money and hold not insignificant amounts back for their funding of supervising education and providing services. Huge variation around the country how much value schools find those LA provided services. Some LA's are now marketing those services to academies very successfully.
  14. I understand that the temporary pop -up shop is to cover the business rates until construction works start. The new Grove Vale library will open Spring 2015.
  15. Also Grove Vale library
  16. Officers have said that as soon as they know they'll tell me. I'm hopefully Thames Water will put something out explaining to residents what is going on - I'm an optimist!
  17. Hi Marguerita, At this stage we're finding out if we have enough support for a new school. We don't yet. Assuming we do find enough support we then properly talk to schools and their governing bodies would have to be involved as well as their parents. It would be inappropriate to suggest schools before talking to them and their governing bodies. Happy for other sites to be considered. Which ones do you have in mind? Hi Cubanbreeze, No, I do not want carte blanche. If I wanted that I wouldn't have made such a statement. I see this running in several steps. First ascertaining if we have enough support for a new school. Forming a proper steering group of interested supporters. Then properly approaching schools that are co-ed, non faith to see which would be interested and what ethos they would agree. I'm sorry if this feels slow and lacks certainty for you as a parent. Holding a public meeting when we don't yet have sufficient support for a new school is putting the cart before the horse. WE also don't have the details that most people attending a public meeting would want.
  18. Apparently it's Thames Water emergency works. Hence the chaotic nature. Southwark officers haven't yet been given the paperwork for this so they're not clear how long the works will be.
  19. Hi fleurie, I guarantee once we find a likely partner everyone who has offered their support will categorically be given the chance to withdraw their support. Hi born-again, NHS property have held public meeting about the future of the Dulwich Hospital site.
  20. Hi SebsC, How annoying A. to not be told and B. that it isn't signed for people to follow more sensible routes. Have emailed the lead officer to ask what's going on and by whom.
  21. Hi Cubanbreeze, I don't think the Charter could more than double in size without affecting quality. It a much clearer process to get a new school than to double a school in size. It's also much less disruptive to build a new school than expand a school from 180 per year to 360. That would take them from 1,200 pupils to 2,400 pupils in one school. I just don't think The Charter would maintain its popularity. Do you?
  22. Hi bawdy-nan, I have asked and some have forward this campaign to their parents. NB. Southwark Council has no LA controlled secondary schools. The effective blocking of new LA schools started under Tony blair. It isnt anything new. If anything it in theroy is slightly easier now if an LA wantedto do this. BUT a new school costs many millions to create. Using the free school process, or the previous Academy process, means all the costs are covered by central government.
  23. Hi ITATM, The future health use has been scoped out as requiring 5,000m2 to 7,000m2 of the sites total 27,000m2.
  24. I won't get along to Friern Road before the weekend this week. Can you tell me which bit of Friern Road please? Generally as the street have unrestricted parking as long as the vehicles are taxed, insured, MoT'd, not obviously unroad worthy or blocking a drive then not much can be done. If you email me we can discuss what else might be possible.
  25. Hi Cubanbreeze, No, I'm not trying to create a private school. I'm trying to create a state funded school that reports to the Department of Education. But yes I hate to see over 20,000m2 of public land staying derelict waiting for thE NHS to sell it for private housing while we have a mounting shortage of schools places. If you can suggest another site further from The Charter I'd be really grateful. AS for philanthropists. All these schools are funded by public money from your and my taxes. They don't run for profit and are charities. The only difference is Local Authority schools act an intermediaries for government money. The free school concept is the same as the Labour government Academy concept. It's a way for central government to side step local authorities where an organisation tries to show it will have quicker and more impact than an LA. I think LA's should be able to do this where they can demonstrate they are equally as successful. But I don't run national education policies so I have to live with what we have and make the best possible job for local children. What would you propose to provide desperately needed school places working within the current laws?
