former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi nxjeb, The land is curently owned by NHS Property. To fund changres they'll be looking to use a PFI vehicle that will sell land/build houses. Considering the low rate of interest using PFI feels perverse. Happy to have chat on phone outside of work hours. Hi Vik, Have PM'd you back. Please email me the correspondence and emails you mentioned. Clearly extremely urgent. -

Hi ED - NAGAIUTB, Sadly I suspect we'll always have some level of burglaries. But hardening our homes to make it tougher to get in will help. The recent trend has been for Home of Multiple Occupation to be burgled. Often the front door has a basic yale type lock whihc is easy for force and then they can break into individual flats without being observed. Often the occupants don't know each other to realise when something odd is happening. The other trend is apprently sngle glazed sash windows being forced. Sash window locks are a good precaution. Double glazed sash windows also help. Hi Emurphyie, Dulwich Hospital site. Apparently another2-3 years befor the site will be sold during which time detailed plans willbe developed. This have been almost the exact status for 15-20 years! I'm hopeful that of the 27,000m2 4-5,000m2 will be released for a new primary school. -

The timing of the highest wind speeds meant checking lines and clearing fallen trees could only take place durin the rushhours. Can't imagine anyone would favour risks of derailments over checking lines for trees when we know many will have fallen down. I think it's a credit to London that a 1 in 25 year event occuring during the rush hour will cause disruption mostly until lunch time but essential activities are all going ahead.

Great advert for having strong doors, great locks, Manchester and London bars.

Hi edhistory, I'm an elected representative and was asked about such stores. Checked out the feeling via this forum and asked both M&S and Waitrose if they had plans to come. I'd prefer Iceland to stay because clearly many people like it. But they're no longer willing to pay the new market rent on their current site. Equally I've spoken to three cinema chains about coming to Lordship Lane. Regenerated the Leisure centre, all street lighting modernised, 20mph, new schools. It's what local politicians should do.

The worst storm in 26 years was predicted to hit East Dulwich this morning Monday 28 October - a Met Office Amber warning was issued: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=warnings®ionName=se&fcTime=1382918400 PREPARATION Some useful tips collated by the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24693145 Such as charge mobile phones, have council number ready 020 7525 2000, ensure shed doors locked closed, etc. TRAINS Southern trains reporting near normal commuter service from London Bridge to East Dulwich. No London Overground trains from Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye as service currently suspended. First Capital Connect running limited services via Herne Hill and Denmark Hill to/from Blackfriars. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24690552 London Underground generally ok on underground sections. Eurostar - services running but with delays. Wind speeds were predicted to be 60-80 mph around 6-9am with 70mph recorded at Heathrow. LONDON TRANSPORT Tube - running on undergorund sections normally. Buses - Queues locally but anecdotally reported as settling down to normal service. River Services - good Emirates Airline - suspended due to high winds. ROADS Junction of Glengall Road with Old Kent Road closed due to collapsed crane taking some scaffolding with it. Avoid that area. FLOODING No reported flooding locally. Apparently decision taken to not clear gulleys as it was felt they'd fill up again due to the winds. fortunately no one flooded. COUNCIL SERVICES All Libraries opened on time. Nunhead Cemetery is closed but all other parks and green spaces open. All leisure centre open. Rubbish collections proceeding as normal. Street cleaners out and about. FALLEN TREES So far 40 trees and branches reported down across Southwark - 3 around Peckham Rye Park boundary, 1 on Shawbury Road, 1 on Thompson Road. Apparently it will take upto a week to clear them all. Priority is being given to those that are unsafe, blocking roads, pavements. I've asked whether the council can supplement the contractors so they can spend more time chain-sawing rather than clearing up. Where necessary barriers will be placed to ensure people don't crash into them. Work overnight will be taking place to remove as much as quickly as possible. FLIGHTS Gatwick and City Airport running as normal. Heathrow has instructed all airlines to reduce their schedules in the following manner on Monday: Between 0600 and 1100 a 20 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied Between 1100 and 1600 a 10 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied Between 1600 and 2230 a 5 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied British Airways are cancelling European and domestic flights. Other flights, still shown as operating, may suffer from delays.

Hi unlurked, Because placing the SelectADNA stickers on the entry points tells burglars that if they get caught with the goods they'll be successfully prosecuted. Most are smart enough to pick on another target. As you say deterrent is best. As for more Police patrols. You'd need dozens and dozens on patrol in our smallish area to stand a chance of noticing them or them spotting something. Sadly thE Met Police doesn't yet use the smart policing models of predicting where crime will be. -

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Police arrested two people in the act of burgling very recently. They anticipate a fall in SE22 burglaries will result. So I'm not aware of any extra patrols and have asked. If any one living in East Dulwich ward would like a free property marking kit or personal alarm email me with the best number to call you on so we can arrange a home visit to bring these and other crime prevention kit along. -
introduction of a 20mph zone in east dulwich grove
James Barber replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The consultation was in favour and the scheme is recommended to proceed. But the scheme is limited eastwards to Matham Grove. So the works at the Lordship Lane junction are not related. Hope that helps. -
Ivydale School to Expand
James Barber replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The council could alternatively use the Dulwich Hamlet new free school model planned for Bellenden Old School on Belleden Road. Find an outstanding Southwark school and ask them to open a new free school on the spare land at Bredinghurst. This would also mean an extra circa ?5M from the government to pay for everything. It means Ivydale would focus on improving the existing school rather than doubling it with the added complication of split sites. But I fear the council administration would be concerned at losing face by changing its plan. -
Help please: do I need planning permission to build a new fence?
James Barber replied to Kath Berry's topic in The Lounge
Crime Preventrion always says have nothing in your front garden over waist or chest height. Hedges above this are a gift to burglars and worse. -

Please do report this to the Police via their 101 number. without reporting such crimes they think everything is fine locally. -
Parking controls in the Dulwich park?
James Barber replied to achaikos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The 4 hour proposal WAS REJECTED BY COUNCILLORS. Disabled parking is occupied by non disabled drivers and apparently this is a year round issue. So without some formal documentation this can;t be enforced. Shameful that people would do this and that council tax money, your and my money, needs to be spent on creating a situaiton where these spaces can be legally enforced with moral enforcement having failed. Yes, several weekends a year the park is over run with cars and agreement is needed on the exact layout to be considered safe and that vehicles contravening this will be issued parking tickets. I had asked that parks and highways team agree something with the friend group to speed things up but fellow councillors wanted to make the decision rather than just the principle. -
Parking controls in the Dulwich park?
James Barber replied to achaikos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
And at the last Dulwich Community council we rejected the poropsed 4 hour parking limit. We agreed that parking enforcement of disabled bays should occur. and that agreed parking places come back to the community council and once agreed would be enforced - to stop dangerous parking. -
Thank you - incident near Actress this evening
James Barber replied to katgod's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
That's really unfair unlurked. "local politicos" fought to keep East Dulwich Police station for many many years. We stopped Ken Livingstone closing it. We stopped Boris the first time he tried. We failed the second time Boris decided to close it after he stated bold as brass he never would only in May 2012. Amazingly "local politicos" are able to work on more than one problem at a time. Knocking down hospitals. We fought against the Dulwich Hospital being down sized and part s being knocked down. We tried 'saving the onions'. But now it has been seriously downsized and much knocked down we have to work with that reality. I'm amazed you're then criticising us for wanting to make sure we have enough school places and would like to have the ability to see a film at a cinema in East Dulwich. We all need to look out for each other more. AND report everything to the Police either as 999 or 101. Currently the Police are chuffed that reported crime has gone down so much and they think this re enforces their decision to close the Police station and largely withdraw from the area. The Police haven't done any research to see how much of any such reduction is due to closing the Police station where people often reported crime! -
