Hero Security Guard @ Sainsburys
James Barber replied to scor46's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Via Southwark News speaking with Sainsbury's I've heard he is at home with his family. He's now waiting for an operation on a leg. That Sainsbury's didn't think his injuries life threatening but he's not out of the woods yet as he did sustain a head injury. What a brave guy. He and the two members of the public who helped should get bravery awards. -

Hi Sue, I've been told that the 020 7525 2000 call centre is causing problems - I'm not yet clear whether its the call centre or the volume of missed collections increasing the number of calls. -

Penguin68. That sounds a great suggestion for an event. That could be quite some finale to the Dulwich Festival. What other ideas for Dulwich events do people have? -
I agree with you in general DJKillaQueen. Absolutely that's how events should be run. It's just that Southwark Council events team haven't successfully run big events in Dulwich Park and didn't allow enough funds to rectify all the damage caused under their management. And then took each time a year to repair the damage they caused. Risking Dulwich Park for 2,000 people event lasting 1 hour versus a year before the park is repaired. It feels a no brainer to me.

But we have several already in the area. In fact we're surrounded by public displays and also a fab one at Dulwich Sports Club of off Burbage Road. The Dulwich College Prep School one on Gallery Road is also supposed to be good. We did suggest that if the council really wanted to add another local firework event then Belair Park would be a better venue than Dulwich Park - but they declined. But we don't have very many other local events spread out during the year. Funding the Dulwich Festival a regisitereed charity would give far greater value for money. -

Hi the-e-dealer, I'm sorry you're unhappy with The Colour Thief...not proceeding. What event do you (and others) think should happen in the Dulwich area going forward? And at what time in the year. Personally i think a bigger Dulwich Festival. -
Blimey! The final result appears to now be a traditional bonfire night in Southwark Park and ?30,000 leftover for an event in Dulwich at a later date. The Colour Thief... was going to be a fusion of Firework night, Diwali, Christmas and Hanukkah on Friday 4 November this year. Hence the unusual title. As this event would involve fireworks and planned to always take place around 5 November http://moderngov.southwarksites.com/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=22438 Frankly I didn't get mixing all those events up with bonfire night. Hi DJKillaQueen, I gave one example of the many problems major events have caused in Dulwich Park. The council could take the view they should ignore Friends of Dulwich Park but thankfully they didn't.

Maths evening at Goose Green school
James Barber replied to Coach Beth's topic in The Family Room Discussion
What a great evening. Well done Goose Green PTA. First of many maths magic tricks..... Think of a number. Double it. Add ten. Divide your answer by two. Finally take away the number you 1st thought of. And your answer will be....five! Maths magic for everyone. -
Hi DJKillaQueen, Dulwich Park doesn't hold any major events these days - it used to host a country fayre which generally left Dulwich Park trashed. Once the Heritage Lottery/Southwark Council renovation of the park started large events were considered too dangerous and expensive in terms of rebuilding the stone gate posts which were always being toppled over by visiting lorries. So the venue wan't a great idea for The Colour Thief...... The other issue was another event on Bonfire Weekend - the local Police don't have the resources to Police more events. So if the council was going to fund a local event we'd prefer it to be not on the busiest most event filled weekend of the year. If ?78,000 is allocated for an event in the Dulwich area we'd prefer the money be spent on something that lasts longer than one hour and can't be wiped out with rain. So we've suggest supporting the Dulwich Festival a proven successful programme of events that could then really reach out to even more people. Lastly the idea and title of the event was bonkers - which strangely is what the press actually picked up on. I spoke to a number of reporters explaining our total position but they plucked out this point. Yes, when the Lib Dems led the council we had a centralised system of funding for over a dozens events across the borough. On reflection we should have devolved the budget at that time. This years reduction of the events budget and making hard choices is a great time to devolve budgets to really ensure we get the events people want. It is also a great way for all councillors to own any difficult decisions. Currently the cabinet of nine councillors make all the events decisions and is being changed so one councillor Veronica Ward makes all the decisions. I'm sorry you feel community councils working together for the events they want is ridculous. It would ensure all areas get a fair slice of the events pie and it's more likely that the 62 other councillors than Veronica Ward would know what event/s would go down well in their patches. Importantly communities could say whether they felt 3 bigs events was better value than suporting more local events. NB. The central event was Elephant and the Nun. But really this central event was an umbrellas for local events happening on the same day. This would just as easilly be focused via community councils.

Hi fazer71, If you have any evidence of any bribery, backhanders or 'carve up the work# then please do report it. Fraud spreads and all instance must be stamped out. You can either meet me privately, call the Police or I can arrange a confidential meeting with the officer in charge of defeating fraud. I've been a member of the councils Audit & Governance Committee since it inception and very keen to counter any and all fraud. -
Great idea Penguin68 and thank you for spotting this and telling everyone. Just use different colour lids. consider this a formal request from me to the council and I'll let you know the answer. If anyone has other great ideas OR has collection missed and after contacting the council hasn't had the missed collection collected that day - please tell me. Best via email as more or less whatever I'm doing I can read emails.

020 7525 2000 option 5 - and many thanks to this thread for finally inspiring me to do this. Once you've made the call it takes upto 5 days for them to be collected.

Hi the-e-dealer, You've baffled me. Generally, we're trying to find out what the new southern event plans are from sOuthwark Council. Clearly not something over fireworks weekend. And we finally think senior council officers understand the reluctance of FRiends of Dulwich Park, Dulwich Socieity and Dulwich councillors about holding large events and night time events in Dulwich Park.

If you look at the tiny section of wall just in from the ticket office at East Dulwich station you can see it bending out. If Network Rail change the access they would need to ensure DDA compliance - probably via a lift and a new stair case as DDA ramps would be very long to ensure no more than 1:20 with staging points at the requisite frequency. So the retaining wall would need to really cut into the embankment while keeping train services running. It would need to be around 100m long. Agreed it sounds an incredible price. I'm not sure they were fobbing us of as it would result in one of their stations being upgraded and they'd end up with a new ticket office. -
The land is metropolitan open land and legally very hard to developed - else the Dulwich Estate would be sorely tempted to sell unleased sports grounds for housing. I you have specific instances I can approach the school but I've taken up generalities several times now and the responses can only really be also generalities back.

The feedback I've had is that the coach service carries between 250 and 300 Alleyns pupils to and from (out of a total of over 1100) so that obviously results in a large number of cars taken off the road in respect of Alleyn?s alone, let alone the other schools. It also clearly points to predominantly local pupils. ? As you know, the School Coach Services are run out of Dulwich College and I quote below a message I received from them via the Alleyns bursur. ? "I will speak to the operators about engines running. Re parking in the bays, the number of coaches we have exceeds bay space. So some coaches pick up on the single yellow lines which they are legally allowed to do so. We have tried to minimise disruption to the residents by saying to the operators that they are not allowed to be there before 2.45pm." If anyone spots anything contrary to this please email me direct so I can get o the case immediately and ideally tell me the registration, time and date.

Parking in Tintagel Crescent
James Barber replied to amygemmell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A public consultation on a Controlled Parking Zone covering Tintagel, Oxanian, Zenoria, Elsie, Melbourne 1-63 & 2-44, Derwent and similar streets the other side of Grove Vale will take place October/November. If people want a CPZ it would be created March 2012. Options about all day mon-fri or just 10-12. I did ask for option 11-12 but apparently it could be practically tricky to enforce. I'll keep trying if residents choose the two hour option. I've asked for parking enforcement to help enforce parking restriction around Goose Green school as well as others to ensure pedestrian safety. -
That's useful. I have twice had such casework at this site. Third time lucky the offender sees the light!

Southwark Council has no plans to change form the soon to be implemented fortnightly rubbish collections, fortnightly recycling collections and weekly food waste collections. For those that want a smaller green wheelie bin call 020 7535 2000 and ask for a 180 litre green wheelie bin. Any problems pleae email me. I will ask if the council can provide 180 litre brown and blue wheelie bins. I've asked about smaller bronw ones before with no success but that was when they we only for garden waste. Fingers crossed.

A little out of East Dulwich ward but within SE22. I've been asked about the junction of Forest Hill Road with Colyton. Next year several koto OS will be consulted upon by council officers about this junction and all Forest Hill Road generally.
