Hi Silverfox, Lunch times are the times my colleagues pop out for sandwiches which they generally eat while working. Mean while I use this as the opportunity to dash on my bike to Tooley Street - my day job is a 5min cycle ride away - to hold those meetings that phone calls and emails can't quite replace. One day I'll wean council officers onto conference calls.

Bike thefts in East Dulwich Area
James Barber replied to m7post's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Always have two locks. If you have any garden or terrace then buy a ground or wall anchor to lock the bike to and cover it up from the elements. So people do this to the front of their house in front gardens. Crucial thing is two brilliant locks of different types. Bike theives rarely carry two different methods of breaking locks. If outside the fornt of a house don't have an expensive bike. -
hi silverfox, What are Town Hall hours? I have meetings on the way to work at 7 or 8am. During lunch times, after work and have had several go on to the VERY early hours causing no end of grief at home - who is she, etc, etc. Most meetings however start at 7pm and go on to 10pm and beyond. Saying that this Thursday looks to be a short one or two hour planning meeting.

If anyone knows of a broken street light please report it via 020 7525 2000. If its not fixed within a few days please tell me. I know Crebor Street, Friern Road have had a number of street lgihts broken for some time and I've visited them weith the head of street lightings boss to personally point them out. Dog poo. Street cleaning is not such a high priority for the new Labour administration. Their priority politically is universal free school meals. During the next 12 months you'll see the street get dirtier. A lot of street cleaning is seasonal - leaves, etc. Locally Labour are dead against employing extra street cleaners, temps, when the streets need extra effort to keep them clean. But if you know an area that looks worse than others please tell me.

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The changes to North Cross Road Market will be discussed in details with recommendations drawn by the Dulwich Community Council on 9 February 7pm at Christchurch hall (263 Barry Road). If you have a view do come along to help us reach sensible conclusions. Equally tell local East Dulwich councillors what you think: Cllr [email protected] Cllr [email protected] Cllr [email protected] Our recommendations I will then take to the next Licensing Committee. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Lying Toad, Beofre becoming a local councillor I chaired the local cycling campaign Southwark Cyclists and was the CTC's volunteer representative for an number of years. I met with various road collission experts from TDfL/TfL, DoT, council officers. Non of the stats showed manhole covers as an accidents issue or leading to collissions. If you have further research that shows they are please let me know. Most manhols covers are placed where you only have to cycle in a straight line over them. Bigger issue from my perspective is pot holes. Hi pugwash, What a tempting idea! I would be careful of the 'law of unintended consequences' though. -
Northcross Market to open on Sundays?

Last night at the Licensing Committee - very helpfully 10 residents also came along - went better than I expected. The committee helpfuly let me speak and two other residents who wished to. To be honest I was really quite relieved how consensual the committee was and how patient they were listening to me speak for some time about the good and bad things currently and proposed (see attached). It agreed that the market be expanded from 20 to 30 stalls. It agreed to refer back to the Dulwich Community Council for its recommendations about: - Sunday trading 10-4 - Saturday trading 10-4 - Should the market Mon, Tues, Weds, Thurs be formally limited to 5 stalls. - Where IF any parts of North Cross Road should be closed on market days. - Views on traffic calming on North Cross Road. We're not sure which Dulwich Community Council meeting will hear evidence from council markets officers, traders, shopkeepers and most importantly residents espeically those who live nearby. As soon as this is confirmed I'll let everyone know. If anyone has any concerns or issues please email me so I can ensure everyone's voice is heard and the best possible recommendations are made by the DCC. One very helpful observation is that without marked out areas traders arrive very early to nab the best positions and in the process cause avoidable noise in the area. -

which schools may take bulge classes?
James Barber replied to sglanzer's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Goose Green. They're taking over ?1M from the ?12M allocated to Southwark by central government to support more primary school places. So if they don't provide more primary school places in excahnge Southwark would have to return ?1M+ to central government. I'd be amazed if St.Anthony's doesn't permanently expand from 1.5 classes of entry 45 kids to 2 FE ie 60 kids. Hope this helps. -
Northcross Market to open on Sundays?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Tonight 7pm at Southwark Town Hall (junction of Peckham Road with Vestry Road) the Licensing Committee will decide whether to increase the number of pitches, add Sunday 8am-4pm with 7am-8am set-up, and closing Northcross Road between Archdale Road and Lacon Road every Saturday and Sunday. The public are welcomed at such meetings and I will be there as a ward councillor. If anyone does pop along do say hi to me. -

Hi Tarot, Red lines can only be placed on Red Routes and a few metres along side roads from Red Routes. Corners of roads, as per the highway code, are meant to be kept clear with no parking. This is generally only enforced where a dropped kerb is present. The only way to make it clearer would be lots of double yellow lines or more dropped kerbs. Is the problem at corners so bad we'd want to request money spent on double yellow lines - the administration for such changes is exhorbitant. Or would we prefer to see more dropped kerbs to help people actually cross roads - taknig into account they should be isntalled on the pedestrian desire lines - I'd do for the dropped kerbs. What do you think? Hi Peckhamgatecrasher, Works are planned for Lordship Lane including it junction with East Dulwich Grove. Several detailed studies have been made of this junction. East Dulwich councillors have met with transport council officers and specialist conmsutlatnts over the last 4 years. Officers have proposed signalising the junction. To do that no parking on Lordship lane would be allowed within 100m to keep the current junction capacity. SAfter much debate the proposal I made of a crossing of lordship lane immediately to the south of the junction is being explored. Pedestrians crossing break up the flow of Lrodship Lane traffic allowing vehicles to turn in and out of East Dulwich Grove safely which also means pedestrians can safely cross when vehicles can;t turn into or out of EDG. That's the concept. This can be done without having to remove lots of parking. Probably with a kerb built out one car width on the eastern side of Lordship Lane to reduce the time taken to cross the road with any new crossing. However, the funds assigned to this have had a a change of scope to reflect the change of council adminsitration and their emphasis is now on Grove Vale - they even want to spend ?100k on speed calming on Tintagel Crescent of all places! So East Dulwich councillors will continue to argue and fight for sensible changes to Lordship Lane to reflect its high street pedestrian use. Hope this makes sense. -
Since becoming a councillor in 2006 many people have asked, especially on this forum, for a Waitrose or M&S type supermarket. This thread was meant to test that proposition. I had a site in mind on Lordship Lane that the council owns. It seems clear from respondents that in the round strong opinions held with majority having anti feeling for any more supermarkets. That some might favour a true cooperative like the The People's Supermarket. That if any changes are to be made either get the existing Coop to improve or replace it but no more supermarkets. Useful thoughts about why can't the independents work together on customer service and home deliveries. I will take these thought to the next SSBA meet I attend. Many thanks for everyone's support in giving such clear feedback.

Northcross Market to open on Sundays?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Sue, That would be my guess. But council officers have not told anyone about how this newly proposed road closure of Northcross Road between Archdale Roadn and Lacon Road is proposed to work. Hi edanna, I concur. When East Dulwich councillors were told about the proposed consultation we were told verbally and in writing that no plans to close any parts of Northcross Road. I can see merits to closing part of Northcross Road BUT this requirement to expand from 20 to 30 pitches should have been stated in the consultation and options around which bits of Northcross Road given. The whole thing feels shabby. Hi nxjen, Email recevied. Many thanks. -

soft play in Peckham - open today???
James Barber replied to pripolla's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi prippola, Sorry for the delay. Peckham Softplay is open 9.30am-5.50pm Mon-Sun every week EXCEPT bank holidays when its open 9.30am-5pm. The head council officer has now asked Fusion to change it recorded messaging to explain these opening hours as they are different to the centres opening hours. TRicky to do this without info overload but will check in a fortngiht to see this has happened. While investigating this noticed that the Swimming timetable showed Autumn. Transpires that timestables are report: Jan-Mar = Winter Apr - Jun = Spring Jul - Sept = Summer Oct-Dec = Autumn Suspect this falls in nicely with financial quarters of financial year running 1 April - 31 March. so I've been assured that in the longer term they'll review these titles to ensure more useful. -
Hi Penguin68, Useful feedback. As I've stated several times my asking was from attending South Southwark Business Association meeting where I was asked by local traders how could we get more people spending their money in Lordship Lane businesses rather than the likes of Sainsbury's + in response to interest shown on this forum in the past for this type of shop. Most people I talk to don't shop at both Sainsbury's and the local traders. Hi thebestnameshavegone & ImpetuousVrouw, Unicorn looks interesting.
