  1. Hi bob, It is rather strange. I'll ask.
  2. Hi Peterstorm1985, Ironic that the Car Club is so successful that the permanently allocate parking space is usually empty. One of the attractions of car clubs is that the car have dedicated car parking spaces - so people can definately park them at the end of their rental hour, half day, etc. Some of the East Dulwich cars are taken out 8 times a day. Yes, we need more cycle parking along Lordship Lane. Any chance of group of people posting on this thread this problem could jointly propose something?
  3. Hi Victoria, Perhaps volunteers could help. It does seems outrageous that it costs ?100,000 to open this 1 O'Clock club on its current hours. That shoudl allow 3 permanent staff and Mon-Fri 9-5 opening.
  4. Every Community Council in Southwark has a devolved budget - as per the last Lib Dem council budget - of ?100,000 to spend on repairing roads and pavements and ?75,000 to upgrade street lighting. If you have any ideas for East Duwich ward please do let me know. I'm expecting the next Dulwich Community Council meeting 16 September to start making decisions how to spend this.
  5. Hi puzzled, One of the earlier posts was that segregated cycle lanes is the answer to get people cycling. I was pointing out that segregated cycle lanes would require around 2m wide barriered seperate bike lane going each way along roads. To achieve this would require lots of the current highways to be reallocated to such segregation. The only thing that could give is to replace car parking with such lanes and frankly that's not a goer in East Dulwich. Saying segregated cycle lanes ARE NOT feasible or practical in East Dulwich is hardly being fixated. On the idea of the Cycle Superhighway going along Lordship Lane in the main highway. I've read past research that cyclists tend to shop more often - they don't have a car boot - and shop more locally for the obvious reasons - and having more cyclists using Lordship Lane and the Cycel Superhighways appear to be boosting numbers cycling should have a positive impact for shops along the route. How big is impossible to say. On cycle parking. Various studies have shown maximum distance cyclsits will use cycle parknig is 20m-50m from the destination. So we do need more cycle parking along Lordship Lane if we're to make it bike friendly which would ease car parking if people switch.
  6. I've contact the East Dulwich Police SNT asking if they can 'innoculate' this area with crime prevention advice, locks we've provided for them and property marking kits. I don't lke to be alarmist but burglars tend to repeat within 50m of previosuly committed burglaries - so they spread like infections. Hence the concept of innoculating an area from further burglaries.
  7. I can't think of any roads in East Dulwich we could put segregated cycle parths along without removing all the car parking and that wont have breaks every few metres for vehicles crossovers which negate the point. Cycle Superhighways come with lots of supporting changes aroudn the route. So lots of one way streets are having cycel contraflows making cycling more direct and appealing. Lots of cycle parking. When I was Southwarks Cycling Champion we obtained significant changes and improvements from what was orginally proposed. I would expect whatever final route to have lots of supporting changes that will help people cycling, walking or responsible other road users. Its the ancillary measures that really bring the benefits.
  8. Was the property marked? Did the sash windows has window locks/bolts?
  9. Last night I received my official invite to the official reopening of Dulwich Leisure Centre Phase 1 on Thursday 23 September.
  10. Hi DJKillaQueen, I'm not wedded to LL. It just runs right through the middle of East Dulwich. Also, I personally find Barry Road a real slog as 1 mile of up hill. The planned route into Southwark is along Lordship Lane so making a Barry Road/Lordship Lane turn is problematic. Equally the money that would come with the Cycle Superhighway could finally resolve all the collission problems on Lordship Lane which has far more than Barry Road. LL is a destination in its own right so would benefit from more people on bikes going through it. People on bikes tend to shop much more often and cycling along our high street should see trade boosted. I'm boring myself so will stop.
  11. Hi Otto, I don't think bike hires are planned to come this far south - but will ask and if yes will report back. Generally perhaps the route could take LL and divert around the hill from Grove Vale. Hi Kalamity Kel, The current Cyclue Superhighways were rushed in hope of completion by Boris before the May elections. I'd hope next phase would be more considered. Lots of supporting measures would be funded for a CS along LL. What they would be is up for grabs.
  12. Hi elloriac, i get soya milk in cartons which aren't tetrapaks - soya milk Yorkshire puddings are the best. Hi Fuschia, Central government should finish its spending review 20 October when it will tell local councils what money it will give them. Its been well sign posted that anything between 15-40% cuts to cope with the national economic crisis and central government provide around 75% of all the money local councils spend. In this climate I think we should wait to see how that pans out before I ask for a spending increase on something. Hope that seems reasonable.
  13. I have mixed views on this. A cycle Superhighway would bring lots of money to Lordship Lane and the sourrounding areas to help make them more cycle friendly. I'd also expect average 20mph speed cameras to make Lordship Lane really good for people walking. Flip side it would send cyclists up and over Dog Kennel Hill which frankly is not a route to encourage cycling. A potentially better route would be via Crystal Palace Road and effectively around the hill. Greendale would be a brilliant route but when I spoke to TfL last Autumn they were concerned that after dark peopl would be put of from cycling. What route do you think the cycle superhighway should take that would get you cycling?
  14. The Liverpool John Moore University Centre for Public Health published the latest Alcohol Profile for England - http://www.cph.org.uk/showPublication.aspx?pubid=661 Headlines, 65% increase in English hospital admissions, 15,500 people a year die as a consequence of alcohol, extra 415,059 crimes were attributable to alcohol with 12.2 crime per 1,000 residents in London - roughly 10% of all crime. HArd to extrapolate this to East Dulwich. See attached covering Southwark. I've also added the latest crime stats.
  15. Hi elloriac, I'm fascinated by Tetrapak as surprisngly emotive issue - most recyclnig is - few interested in the whoel life cycle. Perhaps Tetrapak are carbon neutral not just the selling of its producets but even the recyclnig of its products. I suspect the former and not the latter else they would have been happy to release their life cycle management data which they weren't. The key to Tetrapak recycling is creating sufficeint demand to warrnate reprocessing in near to customer. IDeally a plant in SE england and another in NW England. This probably need national support from the supplier creating the infrastructure. UNtil then they ship to Sweden and its not clear whether the resources recovered from what is a complicated produce warrante that shipping. Apparently it is good quality cardboard and the resell rate for recycled cardboard is good. Hence some Local Authorities colelct cardboard seperate from paper. NB I'm fine with offsetting done well.
  16. FROM SOUTHERN RAIL We are looking for passengers who want to be involved in giving views on Southern services to join our Passenger Panel. The role of the panel is a consultative one with opinions of members gathered on our services and changes we might want to make. This could be anything from timetable changes to announcements on trains. The panel of 1000-plus people complements our existing consultation process with local councils, user groups and other passenger representatives. In order to tailor Passenger Panel surveys as much as possible, we ask you to provide us with information about you and your typical journey on Southern. We expect surveys to take place no more than once a month and depending on your typical journey and the plans and issues to be discussed, relevant surveys for you may be less frequent than that. The panel is managed through the Southern website and by email so you must have access to both in order to participate. If you would like to be involved, why not apply to become a member by completing the form using the link below. Apply to join the Passenger Panel http://www.southernrailway.com/about-us/passenger-panel/
  17. Hi The Nappy Lady, This made me laugh. Isn't the point of a charity shop to raise as much money for its good cause. If the prices see things selling in East Dulwich then I'm glad my donations are getting top dollar.
  18. I've discussed burglaries with the Police East Dulwich Safer Neighbourhood Team. They will be making extra patrols in the triangle bounded by Grove Vale, East Dulwich Grove, Melbourne Grove. They'll also be offering door to door property marking kits to those that don't have them. But the chance of finding someone in is low so if you'd like a kit or Crime Prevention visit do contact them. [email protected] I also think the Crime Stoppers website has lots of good advice. Well worth a 20 min peruse. http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/crime-prevention If you live in that area please do join the local residents group chaired by Heather Burrell. The more neighoburs you know the more liklely someone will spot anything happening to your home and generally keep an eye out for you. New residents and anonymous residents are more liklely to be the victims of crime. So do get to know your neighbours.
  19. Food waste pilot. I received details late yesterday that at present Southwark/Veolia don't actually have anywhere to send collected food waste. Negotiations are taking place with Greenwich to receive it and 'bulking' it prior to reprocessing. No contract for the reporcessing component either yet. Fingers crossed they find a solution in befroe the pilot starts in 4 weeks time.
  20. Hi ellisscott, I feel equally frustrated and have again report this activ speed sign not working. Southwark seems to have a permanent problem keeping these in a good state - see one on Crystal Palace Road which I've also reported several times. Hi expat, I didn't know that. Hi elloriac, edanna, Tetrapaks became quite an election issue. As then it isn't clear whether recycling them is good idea it feels while they have to be exported to Sweden to be recycled as no plant operates anywhere else capable of stripping them down to recyclable components. I've quite some correspondence with Tetrapak people and they are unable to provide a life cycle report to show the merits of recycling them. Saying that it feels good and 6 large supermarkets in Southwark have Tetrapak recyclnig facilities collecting last time i heard 14kg of Tetrapaks in total each week. Southwark generates over 100,000 tonnes of waste. Hi Miacis, I was releived to hear people would be on hand to assist with crossings. I'm arranging a briefing with council officers as to how such a junction could be dug for such planned works during term time. If they have to be, then proactively as part of the traffic management order (TMO) that the utility proposes council officers should demand such crossing patrols.
  21. One thought would be polystyrene - bulky, often in boxes for electrical goods and doesn't break down and isn't recyclable. Sure other items.
  22. Hi peterstorm1985, I'm keen that we don't all become bin vigilantes! Also recognise that the planned pilot described by an officer as "bad news" for the borough could really benefit from real community engagement to ensure it works well and every type of item disposed is planned for. Which I think it what you're saying.
  23. Today's Southwark News page 45 has an advert advertising that Dulwich Hamlets have applied for a variation to their hours of opening, hours of providing enteraintment and hours they can sell alcohol. The extra additional hours they've applied to sell alcohol and provide entertainment are: Friday 11pm - 1am Saturday 11pm - 1am Sunday 10pm - 11pm Overal opening hours will then be: FRiday 7am - 1am Saturday 9am - 1am Sunday 9am - 11pm If you wish to comment - whether to support or object then contact Southwark licensing department The application was made 20 August and the window to make a comment is 28 days from then so deadline is 17 September. Any objection would legally need to be on one or more of the following grounds. Equally any support would need to explain why the applciation wouldn't have these imapcts: Objections must relate to one or more of these four licensing objectives. 1. The prevention of crime and disorder 2. Public safety 3. The prevention of nuisance 4. The protection of children from harm Any representation you make should include: - your name and signature - your address details - the date you wrote the letter (or email) - the application that you are opposed to - the reasons why you are opposed to the application I've attached the guide to this. All representations should be sent to: Southwark Council Licensing Service The Chaplin Centre Thurlow Street London SE17 2DG Tel: 020 7525 5748 Fax: 020 7525 5705 [email protected]
  24. Today is the 1st birthday of this thread. I'd like to say a big thank you for the generally warm and sometimes generous welcome I've had. We've worked together to find information out and fix things. If you have anything involving the local council that isn't done well, annoys you or you think plain stupid please let me know and I'll try and improve things with you.
  25. If they bother you then consider joining Heathrow Action Campaign Against Noise (HACAN). City Airport has applied to expand by 50% from 80,000 flights pa to 120,000. The way they've phrased the application it seems clear this is just a stepping stone to further flights. If you're against that then look at Fight the Flgihts.
