Hi candj, Glad you read the article. The research was done about 18 months ago, not in the 1980's. I'm sorry the research findings don't fit your views. I was surprised how conclusively the research demonstrated graffiti and unkept areas result in dramatically greater criminal tendancies. Hi evilkenival, Very easy to say you don't like the science. Please do find the contrary science you're convinced is out there and bring it to the forum. Until the science shows differently graffiti should be treated as the bad news its been proven to be. -

The snooker hall on Camberwell New Road has had banksy style graffiti. It has attracted loads of other 'traditional' graffiti on the building and the area and is costing a small fortune to sort out for the owners. I can't see the wall owners, EDF electricity, wanting to take this risk. And why should they. -

I'm really chuffed that so many people have now confirmed they'll be popping along to the consultation to give views. Brilliant. Really good to see so much thought about making East Dulwich even better - and an amazing amont of affection for a blank wall. With regards to graffiti - read the attached and THEN tell me graffiti is what you think we need in East Dulwich. -

Hi Green Goose, The snowy weather meant lots of freeze thaw action creating lots of pot holes. They can't all be fixed instantly but will be as soon as possible. I've reported lots of pot holes for fixing. Have you? Every year the Lib Dem led Southwark Council spends ?5M on fixing roads and street lighting. BUT, after so many years of neglect - last year of labour led southwark Council zero was spent. So after 40 years of under repairing upto 2002 so it will take many years to catch up on basic maintenance and renewal. Back to this public art. Pop along have your say. If you know an artist with a better idea submit it. -

The service typically removes graffiti within 24hours. Equally, I personally love the idea of green walls. It will be interesting to see what people say. I recall the Goose Green roundabout. It never occurred to me a palm tree but that's what people wanted and its rather grown on me. -
I've been asked to post my response to a PM about this: > Someone threatening other people - report it to > the Police. > If reticent as not feeling its a 999 call then the > Safer Neighbourhood Team which for Peckham Rye > Common and Park is Peckham Rye team on 020 8721 > 2443 > [email protected] > Or the council anti social behaviour hotline and > the council park rangers/community wardens will > investigate 020 7572 5777. > > If this doesn't work out let me know and I'll call > the head of community safety.

Woah. Every year the council spends money removing graffiti from this wall. Where art has been installed before at other locations it reduces the incidence of graffiti. The more popular the art the less graffiti. So I'm hopeful this will be self funding with payback of one to two years. So please do come along to the consultation to help ensure the best possible art or green wall or whatever results. Have your say. Help make East Dulwich even better. Take a look at attached about how environments can increase or decrease crime. Obviously the studies they undertook didn't go further than looking at littering and theft but the principle for more serious crime probably holds. -
Saturday 30 January 3-6pm back room of the Palmerston public consultation about a proposed art installation on the North Cross Road electricity sub station - the big brick wall on the south side near to Lordship Lane. The scheme if funded by Southwark Council Cleaner, Greener, Safer fund. I've attached the proposal. Please do have a look. If you have a view pop along or email me Councillor [email protected] your thoughts.

East Dulwich station (Ticket checks)
James Barber replied to Dog's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi eater81, Sniffer dogs randomly checking people would in my view be a form of stopping and searching. I was under the impression that to do this the Police have to have cause and complete and hand a form over. Suggestion of 10 officers seems OTT. Surely they should be split up and patrolling the network. Doesn't make a good case for having more British Transport Police if they enjoy each others company quite so much. I wish they were allowed on forums such as this to tell us why they think they need quite so much resource to a quiet surburban railway station. -
I had a chat with Val on Saturday. She seemed quite relaxed and has now filled the necessary paperwork in and fruit and veg outside her shop. I'm speaking with the executive councillor Linda Manchester to ask about how and when officers enforce. She's offered to hold a surgery about this and generally community safety. Interested?

I'm told a correlation between people who fare evade and criminal offences committed on the railways. Reducing the incidence of fair evasion, criminals think they'll get caught and make other travel arrangements, helps reduce crime against other passengers and railway property. Other research to suggest, much against my intuition, that minimal crime displacement. More ticket checking is good in my books - as long as its reasoned to allow for odd lost ticket, etc. So first offence warning better than a fine. Second offence fines, etc. -

With such a cold winter it has really brought to light those homes where residents don't have loft insulation. If you don't have loft insulation you may be entitled to free or heavilly discounted loft insulation via one of the following routes: - 0800 358 6668 (Creative Energy Network) - 0800 512 012 - 0845 070 5059 Southwark Council insulation. -

You were very very lucky. Southwark Police have a few Smartwater property marking kits every year. Roughly 100 per ward. This works out about 1.5% of Southwark homes per year. But chrun rate of Southwark residents a year in place like East Dulwich is 14% and more in other parts of Southwark. Residents are dramaticially more likely to be burgled within the first six months of moving. Unfortunately the Police very limited stock of Smartwater means they can't even keep up with population churn. To make a real difference property marking kits need to be done in numbers and targetted at where burglaries have occurred and radius to innoculate neighbours from repeat burglaries and offered universally to those that will install it. -

Hi tommy, Adys Road forms the borders between two other wards - South Camberwell and The Lane. Every year Southwark spends around ?5M on road, pavement and street lighting repairs and upgrades. Roughly half of that spend is now decided locally by local councillors. So every year each ward has ?33,333 for road and pavement repairs beyond pot hole filling, each ward also has roughly ?25,000 for street lighting. For Adys Road you should contact South Camberwell and The Lane councillors and ask them to use some of the ?66,667 that between them they have to spend each financial year. -
I've had a reply from Royal Mail. It makes you wonder why it took so long for this reply. But at least I have a reply. Mr Sxxxx you know who you are. It now appears clear that unless Royal Mail get sufficient compliants about East Dulwich that it wont stick out as having a problem that needs fixing. I suspect more problems have been highlighted and shared on this forum than with the Royal Mail. If, on this thread we all followed a rule of complaining to Royal Mail stating our complaint reference number with each post Royal Mail would soon recognise the blip on their radar and do something. Anyway, the reply: REF 1-1283752414 Dear Councillor Barber Thank you for your email to Mxxxxxx Mxxxx about problems local residents have reported with their delivery service. As you are aware I have been asked to investigate and respond directly to you. First of all I would like to offer my sincere apologies for the concern Mr XXXXX and the other residents have been caused. We aim to provide an efficient and reliable service to all of our customers and take any failures very seriously indeed. For further information I contacted the Management Team at East Dulwich Delivery Office. They have confirmed that there is a regular delivery officer on the round that covers Mr XXXXX's address and on his day off it is covered by a number of reserve officers. There have been no reported problems with deliveries and all mail received in the office is taken out each day. As a precaution a mail monitor has been implemented on Mr XXXXX's address until the end of the month, this should highlight anyissues and give us the opportunity to take any necessary action. With regard to the losses and delays mentioned by Mr XXXXX, perhaps I could explain that due to the volumes of mail we handle every day, we cannot always explain what has gone wrong when a problem occurs. Whilst we keep records of vehicle breakdowns or problems with sorting machinery which might contribute to a delay, the large volume of mail we handle means we are unable to track individual items of mail as they travel through the postal system. In the absence of any major disruption to the service, it is sometimes difficult to explain why a delay or a loss has occurred. Nevertheless, we do endeavour to provide an acceptable level of service to all of our customers and I am sorry that we have let Mr XXXXX down. If he or any of the other residents experiences any further problems please ask them to contact our Customer Services on 08457 740 740 or via our website at www.royalmail.com where they will be able to register the details and enquiries can be made. In the case of delayed mail retaining the outer packaging or envelope can also help with our enquiries. In closing, I would be grateful if you could once again extend my apologies to Mr XXXXX and the other residents for the problems they have experienced. We are certainly not complacent and I would like to stress that the safe delivery of the mail is of paramount important to us. If I can be of any further help in this or any other matter do not hesitate to come back to me. Yours sincerely Assistant to Board Members

burglary - melford road (6th Jan)
James Barber replied to stephf72's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
East Dulwich Police Safer Neighbouhood Team offer SelectADNA property marking kits paid for by Crime Prevention Fund organised by me. This cover East Dulwich ward. Melford Road is in College ward. College ward councillors have'nt organised such funding. I applied to Cleaner, Greener, Safer funding for them to operate similar scheme. They declined. They rightly have their own priorities for the ward they represent.
