  1. I'm afraid I had heard. I've spoken to a passing nurse who described in detail what happened and how she helped the 10 year old girl. Very distressing. I felt distress just from that conversation. I have two young kids I treasure. I can only begin to imagine the grief her friends and family will being going through. I'm going to take a couple of days of from posting.
  2. Hi JeanieB, Great idea to locate a community notice board there. Have asked council officers to talk inform EDf electricity that we plan to install a free standing notice board.
  3. My original posting was to get people thinking what could be done to brighten up this long electrcitiy sub station wall. I've already talkedto electricity engineers about if the sub station could be reduced in size and they said we would'nt have the scale of money. Anyway, it seems some people took the graphic literally - it's just a diagram of the wall with a few ideas - but it certainly got people talking! The wall is not owned by the Southwark council but by EDF electrictiy and it took lengthy negotiations before they agreed in principle to art work on the wall. The idea they agreed to was laminated art work on the "squares" as these could be removed if they withdrew their permission at a later date. EDF will be asked to give formal permission when we have one or more ideas for the artwork. They absolutely have turned down the idea of a mural or graffiti. Apparently the graphic I was given and posted was to encourage people to think how an unusual feature of the wall, ie four "panels" with raised squares on them, could be exploited for any art work. The graphic also showed how it might have a greater impact to select a limited number of squares rather than decorate all the squares. The consultation will take place at the Palmerston back room this Saturday between 3 and 6pm - with free nibbles - all welcome. with a fuller idea of the brief hopefully all those East Dulwich can give their ideas. I've attached another mock-up to generate even more 'interest' ;-)
  4. Hi Peckhamrose, Peckham Rye shopping area and public toilets. This is one area that seems to have several public toilet the Pulse leisure centre or Peckham Library or Macdonal's even. Sure others. In East Dulwich. We've approached Iceland with no joy yet.
  5. Hi Monica, Reason for different trees for different location - London Plane trees can get bigger than Pear Pyrus Chanticleer which apparently tend to be more slender. Probably worth pointing out that when it does fruit the pears are about the size of peas. So it should'nt create much of a hazard on pavements. In your opinion will this be a problem at 45 Lordship Lane?
  6. Hi Medley, I suspect the bus only section of Rye Lane (bit just south of Peckham High Street) has been allowed deteriate as its due to a complete overhaul to enable a south bound contraflow cycle lane. Should look really good when finished before April and fill a gap in Southwark cycle lane network.
  7. Grit bin russling. I kid you not. Lambeth Council has had a spate of grit bin thefts. 101 so far. Each grit bin costs over ?165. So that's a lot of money has been stolen. Southwark Council has found that its grit bins get used for rubbish, stolen, etc so relies on a different apporahc of depositing grit to a location as needed - harder to steal a pile of grit than a grit bin. If you see anyone removing a grit bin do report it via 999.
  8. Hi candj, Glad you read the article. The research was done about 18 months ago, not in the 1980's. I'm sorry the research findings don't fit your views. I was surprised how conclusively the research demonstrated graffiti and unkept areas result in dramatically greater criminal tendancies. Hi evilkenival, Very easy to say you don't like the science. Please do find the contrary science you're convinced is out there and bring it to the forum. Until the science shows differently graffiti should be treated as the bad news its been proven to be.
  9. The snooker hall on Camberwell New Road has had banksy style graffiti. It has attracted loads of other 'traditional' graffiti on the building and the area and is costing a small fortune to sort out for the owners. I can't see the wall owners, EDF electricity, wanting to take this risk. And why should they.
  10. So I now have the proposed list of where this years Cleaner, Greener, Safer funded trees will go: Silvester Road 2 Ornamental Pear (Pyrus Chanticleer) Melbourne Grove 18 Yoshino Cherry (Prunus Yedoensis) Melbourne Grove 6 Indian Chestnut (Aesculus indica) Southwark tree officers are looking to also install so street trees on Pellatt Road at the western end.
  11. I'm really chuffed that so many people have now confirmed they'll be popping along to the consultation to give views. Brilliant. Really good to see so much thought about making East Dulwich even better - and an amazing amont of affection for a blank wall. With regards to graffiti - read the attached and THEN tell me graffiti is what you think we need in East Dulwich.
  12. Hi fractionater, Because graffiti leads to crime. Please read the attached then show me the evidence graffiti is good for East Dulwich.
  13. Hi Green Goose, The snowy weather meant lots of freeze thaw action creating lots of pot holes. They can't all be fixed instantly but will be as soon as possible. I've reported lots of pot holes for fixing. Have you? Every year the Lib Dem led Southwark Council spends ?5M on fixing roads and street lighting. BUT, after so many years of neglect - last year of labour led southwark Council zero was spent. So after 40 years of under repairing upto 2002 so it will take many years to catch up on basic maintenance and renewal. Back to this public art. Pop along have your say. If you know an artist with a better idea submit it.
  14. Sunday post deliveries and recorded delivery. Batches of delayed post being cleared. Perhaps our complaining efforts are having an effect. Weirdly the Channel4 reporter has stopped calling me and the post seems to be getting back to what we'd hope would be normal. Fingers crossed.
  15. The service typically removes graffiti within 24hours. Equally, I personally love the idea of green walls. It will be interesting to see what people say. I recall the Goose Green roundabout. It never occurred to me a palm tree but that's what people wanted and its rather grown on me.
  16. I've been asked to post my response to a PM about this: > Someone threatening other people - report it to > the Police. > If reticent as not feeling its a 999 call then the > Safer Neighbourhood Team which for Peckham Rye > Common and Park is Peckham Rye team on 020 8721 > 2443 > [email protected] > Or the council anti social behaviour hotline and > the council park rangers/community wardens will > investigate 020 7572 5777. > > If this doesn't work out let me know and I'll call > the head of community safety.
  17. Woah. Every year the council spends money removing graffiti from this wall. Where art has been installed before at other locations it reduces the incidence of graffiti. The more popular the art the less graffiti. So I'm hopeful this will be self funding with payback of one to two years. So please do come along to the consultation to help ensure the best possible art or green wall or whatever results. Have your say. Help make East Dulwich even better. Take a look at attached about how environments can increase or decrease crime. Obviously the studies they undertook didn't go further than looking at littering and theft but the principle for more serious crime probably holds.
  18. Saturday 30 January 3-6pm back room of the Palmerston public consultation about a proposed art installation on the North Cross Road electricity sub station - the big brick wall on the south side near to Lordship Lane. The scheme if funded by Southwark Council Cleaner, Greener, Safer fund. I've attached the proposal. Please do have a look. If you have a view pop along or email me Councillor [email protected] your thoughts.
  19. During January/February the following trees will be planted - funded by revenue funding. I'll track down our Cleaner, Greener, Safer funded trees for East Dulwich and post them later this week. 20. Hi eater81, Sniffer dogs randomly checking people would in my view be a form of stopping and searching. I was under the impression that to do this the Police have to have cause and complete and hand a form over. Suggestion of 10 officers seems OTT. Surely they should be split up and patrolling the network. Doesn't make a good case for having more British Transport Police if they enjoy each others company quite so much. I wish they were allowed on forums such as this to tell us why they think they need quite so much resource to a quiet surburban railway station.
  21. I had a chat with Val on Saturday. She seemed quite relaxed and has now filled the necessary paperwork in and fruit and veg outside her shop. I'm speaking with the executive councillor Linda Manchester to ask about how and when officers enforce. She's offered to hold a surgery about this and generally community safety. Interested?
  22. I'm told a correlation between people who fare evade and criminal offences committed on the railways. Reducing the incidence of fair evasion, criminals think they'll get caught and make other travel arrangements, helps reduce crime against other passengers and railway property. Other research to suggest, much against my intuition, that minimal crime displacement. More ticket checking is good in my books - as long as its reasoned to allow for odd lost ticket, etc. So first offence warning better than a fine. Second offence fines, etc.
  23. ** Weather forecast is Heavy Snow sometime tomorrow as per Met Office **
  24. With such a cold winter it has really brought to light those homes where residents don't have loft insulation. If you don't have loft insulation you may be entitled to free or heavilly discounted loft insulation via one of the following routes: - 0800 358 6668 (Creative Energy Network) - 0800 512 012 - 0845 070 5059 Southwark Council insulation.
