  1. Hi fazer71, I'm not convinced. The energy taken to make some of these eco cars is much higher than standard car at the moment. So the total energy during the hole life cycle can be as high or higher. Also, disposing of the end car can currently be more complicated. So, agree with what I think you're trying to encourage but concerned the whole life cycle should be considered.
  2. BNG, I couldn't agree more. That's partly why I've been pushing this so much for so long. The other angle is 60% of the CO2 for a car comes from its manufacture. Pooling dramatically reduces the eco impact of using a car. it also saves people money for spend on other things. Money spent on cars almost all leaves the local economy. I'd like to get pool cars such as Zipcar onto every single street in East Dulwich ward (65) within 60 seconds walk of every front door. So we'd need about 10 times the current 11 cars and vans in the ward. We clearly need to much much more ambitious as a borough and community about this.
  3. Update on Lordship Lane Crown Post Office - the remodelling works will start on Monday last two weeks and they'll make every effort to minimise disruption for customers who part from Saturday am 17 October they will work around. (17th it will be closed). I had asked for a chair or two could be included as some older customers need a rest after getting ot the post office. But sadly no luck yet.
  4. Hi first mate, Southwark issued a Southwark Street Design Manual in 2012. Organising that I think put it n the agenda. We've had the policy reversed for non A & B roads but despite the borough being designated 20mph since the policy we've still not had it changed... yet. But I'm tenacious if nothing else. Hi BNG, In East Dulwich ward we've ensured we have much better car club coverage with more cars and vans than other parts of the borough. We used some of our Cleaner, Greener, Safer money to achieve this. And despite having more car per head of population we have slightly higher utilisation per car. Two weeks ago I asked if we could get lots more and how we could help make it happen. Research suggests that each shared car over time takes up to 25 private cars of off the road. So great for easier parking pressures. But the exclusive contract with Zipcar has slightly less than a year to run so the procurement exercise to select the operator after the current contract is about to kick off and we now have to wait for that to run. If a new operator were selected they may have different views on where they want cars for example. Frustrating. So yes I'd love suggestions but in about a years time. Hi MarkT, I agree and have made those points. I hope to get the policy improved. Hi Abe_froeman, Indeed. The thought had crossed my mind. Then again relatively miminal traffic goes over crossovers. So I don't know the crash rate per movement.
  5. Further news on insisting upon double yellow lines around crossover. Officers insist that after many decades of them not being required they will be required on A&B roads: " Council - Member enquiry Our Reference: 556029 ________________________________________ Dear Councillor Barber Thank you for your enquiry dated 28th August in which you raised concerns about the retention of the policy requirement for double yellow lines at new crossovers on classified roads. Classified Roads (A and B Roads) are at the top of the road hierarchy and take a considerably higher volume of traffic, including a greater percentage of HGV's. They tend to be wider roads and irrespective of whether they are fronted by residential or commercial properties will likely have higher than average vehicle speeds. I have put together a comparison of the traffic flows and speeds on Barry Road with a selection of adjacent roads to illustrate this. Although this data is from 2008 and 2009 I don't expect that traffic data patterns will have significantly altered in the last five years. Data from 2008 / 2009 Vehicle numbers Average Speed 85 percentile Barry Road (N) 4248 25.6 30.9 Barry Road (S) 5024 25.6 30.6 Whately Road (E ) 1225 16.5 19.6 Whately Road (N) 1408 16.7 21.1 Crystal Palace Road (N) 860 16.7 19 Crystal Palace Road (S) 846 17.5 20.6 These factors tend to combine to result in an increase in risk of collisions for vehicles entering those roads. I think it is appropriate that we recognise these roads have demonstrably higher risk of collisions and ensure vehicles entering the highway have sufficient visibility splays provided to reduce this. We have no plans to further review the highways visibility or vehicle crossover design standards at this stage. " What do others think? When all our roads weren't 20mph they didn't required these. Now we're a 20mph borough the administration is insisting upon these. Topsy turvy world.

Who would ever get around to going to a Police station - especially after Boris closing so many?
  7. Hi ED_moots, This was resident led. The council log all complaints made to it about not being able to park. If it gets enough it then investigates it. This investigation led to this CPZ being proposed, consulted upon and agree. it takes effect in late January 2016. I wouldn't say friction. Frustration generally with parking. The parking stressed is relieved during school holidays. But that could be families going away, fewer commuters resulting rather than no school staff. To understand experiences you could look at the CPZ consultation feedback which gives a flavour of how they feel. And I should point out that when the CPZ happens double yellow lines for 10m in from all junction corners are going to be implemented. I think 10m although highway code inspired is excessive especially in 20mph area. Any reduction in parking could be swallowed up by this which would be crazy.
  8. No meeting planned yet that I'm aware of - but I have asked for an explanation. And it isn't finished yet. Works involving a defective lamppost being replaced, etc will go on for the remainder of this year.
  9. Hi worldwiser, I'm told that isn't true. Can you please email me what day roughly what time you called them and I will get a full check of this.
  10. Hi localass, I think the need for teachers to drive is a personal thing. I know teachers that don't bring marking home. They stay at their school and finish all their work and then go home. I know another who cycles with two large panniers some distance. This new school will have a car park. What we're discussing is the size of it. That the charter school very nearby thinks it knows how many car parking spaces it will need. Hi ED_moots, This was an issue from some years ago and is resolved. hi Asset, it was a footway between two estates that the school felt unsafe. Local Police and residents felt safe. Matter resolved some years ago.
  11. Walk, cycle or bus to either Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill or Herne Hill. Thameslink train from any of those station to Kings Cross/St.Pancras. V.short walk from St.Pancras to Kings Cross
  12. Hi ED_Moots, 1,680 pupils. How do you make that number? I'm not anti car. I'm pro waling, cycling and public transport. I have a full driving licence and we have a family car. I'm hugely concerned we're walking into disastrous climate for my kids. Please don't confuse those into being anti car. Cars are a useful tool. I've said I think we have two tests to hi first mate, At no point have I raised or suggested CPZ for our area on this. The issue is dead for me. I've pointed out that a new CPZ is being introduced around the current Charter School in Village ward and that IF the assertion from residents that teachers parking around the school on residential streets is a real issue the CPZ will flush this out. We'll then know if our Charter East Dulwich needs more parking in the final school layout. Hi edhistory, most of Champion Hill has been part of a CPZ for over a dozen years. The recent CPZ consultation about including the Champion Hill Council housing estate found that this council estate residential didn't want to be part of an extended CPZ. All other roads and area are going to be part of the new CPZ. These roads are part of Village ward and South Camberwell ward. Hi spider69, The new CPZ in Village ward is around commuter parking near N.Dulwich station, Herne Hill station and Kings College hospital staff. Its a consequence of the CPZ streets near Herne Hill station and domino effect. It may lead to people no longer able to park near N.Dulwich station parking near E.Dulwich station and adding pressure to our patch. Equally it may not. no changes to the existing Champion Hill CPZ have been agreed and non are proposed to take place.
  13. Hi Galileo, Currently Melbourne Grove northern section has around 5,000 vehicles movements a day. I suspect a number dropping/picking up people going to the station. adding 6-12 parents dropping kids/picking them up is unlikely much worse - at lest the maths suggests it won't. If i remembers correctly the school will operate 9am so a tad after the peak rush hour period. Hi BNG, thanks for answering faith Q. Hi ED_Mots, under ground car parks extremely expensive. That would require some school facilities not happening such as a sports hall. So I hope the money isn't used in that way. Unless you know a friendly multi millionaire? Hi Curmudgeon, macutd, I won't pretend I'm not concerned but the Charter people who have very successfully run a local school for many years don't think they need one. But we'll see when the CPZ around the current Charter school is implemented and the latest school travel plan staff survey. and the traffic study they'll need for the temporary and permanent planning permission.
  14. Hi slarti b, I'm pretty sure one was shown to me but I didn't keep a copy. My family can only stand so many council documents around the house! Hi Tessmo, I've been told the final touches to the document process are nearly completed and expect to release it end of next week.
  15. Would anyone be up for scanning all the Southwark Council photos of the Dulwich area onto a publicly accessible website? Going via officers will cost ?10,000.
  16. Hi confusedbyitall, I share your frustration. BUT the initial NE corner site handed over today has sufficient space for temporary classrooms and two permanent blocks that will provide 70% of all final classrooms. So the final land handover although painful shouldn't get in he way of children starting next September having a great school. And the sports hall should open by end of their first year. Hi redjam, No. They can start building the permanent classrooms from summer next year when we expect planning permission for the permanent blocks. 70% of the total classroom space required for years 7-13 and all the sports hall space should be in place by September 2017. And of course we will strive to move the NHS along. Much of the outdoor space will come after the NHS move out and is mostly about demolishing blocks and building all surface sports facilities - so that can happen very quickly. The final 30% of school classrooms, offices etc. should come from converting and adding to the central Chateau building which will take until 2020/21 but the school wont need that final 30% until after then. I've asked if that central Chateau work on the above ground floors could be done in parallel to the NHS operating there. It would migrate some of the running costs and risk away from the NHS and in return speed up the works and reduce overall timescales. A win win situation potentially. Clearly this isn't ideal. It has taken 23 years for the NHS to reach this stage. John Major was PM when they first started working on replacing Dulwich Hospital!
  17. Meeting yesterday first thing to review these works: " North cross Road /Lordship Lane Schedule of Defects 1.Outside Londis shop BT box to be squared in line with the slabs. 2.Repoint core holes around bike stand. 3.Chipped kerbs stones kerbstones patched 4.Chipped slabs replaced 5.Make good and repoint channel sets 6.BT box at the bus stop cover dropped Out standing 7.Waiting for UK power network to disconnect and removed disused lamp column and replace slabs area. These defects will be corrected soon and you will be notified on completion. " Just waiting dates for these to be fixed.
  18. How bloody annoying. Hope you guys reported these crimes to the Police. If not then please call non emergency number 101 to report them ASAP. The more data the Police have the more resources we get to detect and solve crime and deter crime.
  19. Hi Tessmo, I've asked for copy of latest safety audit. I will share anything I receive here.
  20. Hi Tessmo, The Charter chair of governors at last Dulwich Community Council said joint traffic study with NHS and Monday night when I met new head, deputy chair governors, Southwark officers and project manager said joint study. If different studies by each party then more overall spend and risk that gaps between two different studies. They said 90-95% of current Charter pupils walking or public transport. Risk at new school of 5-10% of pupils being driven/collected which would September 2016 equate to 6-12 cars am and pm expanding to ultimately possible 120 vehicles when school finished. So initially no problem. Bigger risk I suspect is staff driving to/from school. Has to be said it appears the nearest private schools have much higher proportion of pupils being driven to/from schools. So any work to reduce the Charter East Dulwich pupils being driven needs to be applied in the private school direction as well. hi Sunglasses, I can't pretend I'm not chuffed. But huge number of people have worked very hard to get us here and it has been a bumpy if fascinating and stressful ride. Can't wait until late 2020 when new school finally finished (delay due to NHS) and new super health centre in place.
  21. Just received attached letter - so exciting that the feedback from residents we turned into a secondary school campaign has reached this stage.
  22. Hi silly woman, NHS have been proposing 100 car parking spaces for the new super health centre. Presume for staff and patients. This does seem an awfully large amount of car parking. The Charter school is planning for much less parking. I intend to test this idea in two ways. First their current school is about to have a CPZ implemented around it. residents there think the school staff are a major source of their parking stress so when staff can't park on local streets we'll soon see if the school has a problem. The school has a travel plan which will include surveys of how staff and pupils get to school. This will be needed as proof for the temporary site and permanent site to prove their point about so little parking. I hope they can demonstrate they don't need much car parking. As Sunglasses pointed out earlier - better more space for kids than cars. Both the NHS and Charter are planning to procure a joint traffic report which will include parking surveys, traffic flows, estimates of impact of the development. But worth remembering this used to be a very busy full hospital with hundreds of consultation a day, in patients, 24/7 it even had A&E. So the site has had lots of traffic in the past coming and going.
  23. The once proposed Super Cycle Highway along Lordship Lane was canned several years ago. So no this junction change was not part of that.
  24. Hi first mate, Sorry pragmatism. Is this the most significant issued in East Dulwich and Southwark that I should divert all my councillor energies to it over and above continuing to work on more school place - no. Have I raised this repeatedly with council officials and as a group in capital planning yes. And insurance claims are decreasing so on that measure it appears not to be getting worse. Although the planned near stopping of council spending on highway and pavement renewals will have an impact eventually.
  25. I read earlier that we've reached a stage with global warming of a 5m predicted ocean rise. We must all change our habits severely to try and mitigate this and from making it worse. I'm trying to be a near vegetarian, cycling most commutes, 100% renewable electricity. I still need to do much more to reach 90% reduction in CO2 produced to sustain my lifestyle. Closing this road hasn't been with great consultation, isn't well signed to warn people, probably shouldn't apply to residents. But the principle of helping people change lifestyles is good. We just need much better execution of such ideas.
