Bromley Council (as have others) have granted planning permission in such circumstances. Harris are very clear they'd like to build there. The Council leader Councillor Peter John has agreed to asking council officials to try finding an alternative site to the Dulwich Hospital for Harris Nunhead and would prefer an alternative to the Girls Academy site. But nothing is ruled in or out at this stage. (apologies Ive not dug the email from him out and thisis from memory - I will edit this later when I have).

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Peggy, This is really helpful feedback. Thankyou. Could you please email this with specific examples so I can work with the department in the council. My email address is below. Thanks. -
Hi kirstmac1, My personal preference for the 2nd local Harris primary school would be at the former Harvester pub 520 Lordship Lane. But the freehold is with the Dulwich Estate which makes this extremely tricky - the Judith Kerr Bilingual School has been ruthlessly treated by the Dulwich Estate - effectively ensuring private schools gain at the expense of this state school. So I can see the EFA avoiding this site. But Harris Federation themselves are stating they would prefer to place the primary school on the girls academy site. They are an immensely successful organisation I can not imagine they would risk the success of the girls academy. Harris have always said they'd like to build a primary school on the girls academy grounds and the proposed ED secondary school would not and has not changed their views. My understanding from Harris is that they see great crossover between two such schools sharing facilities. It's exactly what several of the private schools do. They also use the primary school to give opportunities for the secondary school children to mentor younger children and gain community experience. But the final decision will be down to Southwark Labour and Southwark Council as the planning authority.

Hi Renata, Please see the letter from the Harris Federation attached 3 posts earlier by Belle. Harris clearly state they would like to build a primary school on the Harris Girls East Dulwich Academy. You keep saying they don't want to I keep telling you they do. We have it in writing. But the alternative would be shoe horning it onto the Dulwioch Hospital site along side a new secondary school. Hopefully common sense will prevail. The original campaign my colleagues and I started and way back in 2011 had a huge response from the Peckham Rye and Nunhead area. The Educational Funding Agency accepted all that support and agreed to fund a second new primary school. Your administration have since, knowing this was approved, decided to expand other schools. So your administration must accept the demand is/will be there or why would you plan to add further places? Officers reports show the wider Dulwich area as having a primary reception place shortfall of 215-235 places. When we started our various campaigns and practical support for other free schools your administration had no plans to solve this crisis. We filled that vacuum with a lot of hlp from local families.

Hi roadworrier, From memory these entry treatments had been there a number of years. The planned changes should reduce the number of crashes at this junction and importantly make it feel safer as well. The cost of crashes is very high - so the payback for these changes will be prompt. However, Southwark are the only UK to use specific blocks imported from Eire. That the supply is lagging. so they will need to temporarily use tarmac and then come back a couple of months later and finish the works with the intended materials. This is frustrating and adds expense. Also, I'm not sure why we can't have blocks from the UK, keep the cash and employment in the UK and reduce our carbon footprint. I will follow up on this. -
Hi Coach Beth, Perhaps worth pointing out that the Harris Nunhead free primary school was applied for and agreed before the other expansions you've highlighted. So those other provisions were agreed on top of Harris Nunhead places. We need all those new schools and expansions if we're to fulfil the gap GLA and council forecasts of primary place demand predict. So it's now for Southwark Council to solve. They are the planning authority. The Harris Federation would prefer to build their new primary school on the Harris Girls Academy and Sotuhwark COuncil will grant or refuse this. That site was always one of the main options when I was leading the campaign for new primary schools. If Southwark Council refuse planning permission then practically the Education Funding Agency (pasrt of the Dept for Education) will have to look to permanently place them at the Dulwich Hospital Site. So fingers crossed for Harris building where we'd all like them to build! This would also ensure maximum space for the new East Dulwich secondary school at the hopsital site which I've also led the campaign for with my ward colleagues and since Feb with the Paretns Steering Group.

The planning permission for those 10 flats at 56-62 Lordship Lane above the Coop was granted in February 2005: http://planningonline.southwark.gov.uk/AcolNetCGI.exe?ACTION=UNWRAP&RIPNAME=Root.PgeResultDetail&TheSystemkey=9514490 The only conditions imposed didn't involve any restrictions on occupiers owning cars or parking them locally. Residents on Ashbourne Grove have told me it resulted in extra parking pressure and more people building over front gardens to guarantee they could park. In fact even the condition about waste wasnt enforced and the building was occupied without this being resolved as required. My colleague ex.Councillor Jonathan Mitchell did a lot of work trying to get this fixed - as residents were placing waste onthe street due to no other alternatives in the housing. I have approached council officers if conditions restricting car ownership for new car free properties can be placed and enforced. It would take little to check if any car are registered with DVLA for an address. But this would be new and officers have not been minded to add this. Hope this helps ITATM.

East Dulwich Leisure Centre - problems

I have good and bad news about the DLC. My understanding from council officials today. first apologies for all customers who have been adversely affecte by this over the last 3 1/2 years. The bad news is the builder and their air-handling system hasnt worked properly since installation. It's too damn hot for classes etc. That their contract meant it could only be fixed by them else any other supplier fixing it would be totally at the councils expense and nullify the contract. Finally after 3 1/2 years the council has agreement from the builder to come and fix it. No specific time has yet been agreed but when I know I will share that information here. In the mean time staff are visiting each affected space every two hours and have fans going. Not ideal. -

Hi ITATM, Southwark will invesitgate eco crime but doesn't have an on call on demand resources to take them to task their and then unless it happens in an area with Community Wardens - Peckham, Camberwell, E&C. Best bet is to report ideally with pictures to [email protected] and if not resolved in timely manner escalate to me or another councillor. -
What great news. I wonder what the configuration will be? Do we know when it will reopen as a cinema and who will run it?

New Secondary School East Dulwich
James Barber replied to chupa123's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Chupa123, The reason why this site - is because its the only local site that could house a secondary school. Ideally we'd have found a site 1 mile to the SE but I've not found one. Lottery admissions wouldnt result in a school serving the local area. It would see children coming so distance and not meet any travel plan that the planning process I would anticipate requiring. Frankly, I'm amazed Kingsdale has been allowed to go to lottery admissions considering the travel impact. But the good news is that whichever provider gets to open a new school - Haberdahsers' Aske's or The Charter it should see an overall far larger admissions footprint and I would expect it to stretch into SE15. -
If the council eco line doesnt help you - and it's a bit chaotic at the moment after mega IT problems - then please do escalate to a councillor so we can organise some help explaining whats required to any new or existing residents.

Road Building - if there's nothing to build...
James Barber replied to roadworrier's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I recevied an email about this. I hadnt realised a thread had also been started. These works of removing this entry treatment and the other one opposite are becsuse they're being repalced with a whole junction raised treatment. This is part of the East Dulwich Grove 20mph and crash reduction plans. Sadly I culdnt getthe council to implement cycle lanes but this shoudl be a definite improvement and reduce crashes at this junction. -
Hi first mate, But currently only 2,500m2 of floor space is being used for health facilities spread out over a 27,000m2 of site land. The proposal it to use 5,200m2 going forward spread over 7,000m2 of land. So the new building would need around 1,700m2 of space leaving lots of landscaping and apparnetly 100 car parking spaces! So a huge expansion in health faciltilities being provided but also great new local school/s.

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi roadworrier, Yes, that entry treatment is beign replaced with a full raising of the whole road on East Dulwich Grove. It should help ensure the soon to be 20mph is adhered to and the junctino become much less crash prone. Hi david_carnell, I'll try and find out. Clearly free gym and swimming pool use and they were very clear to not print any caveats will be a big project to introduce. The Labour Leader was clear they didnt yet know how they'd do it but was sure they'd find a way. My hunch is it will be limited by capacity. So when discussing the new East Dulwich swcondary school for example the Labout council leader was interested in our suggestion for a swimming pool and sports hall to be included. Hi Tigres Pride, How ridiculous. Lets see how to can try and fight this. Hi OliviaDee, I'm still waiting a response from the lead officer - I'll escalate to his director. Hi Nigello, I've been assured that Barry Road trees etc will be cut back during June. hi Sabrina Harley, Please keep me posted with that date so I can publicise it. -
Harris Free School Primary on Hospital Site
James Barber replied to Lou's topic in The Family Room Discussion
That's useful Belle. Surprised Tessa has miss spelled Michael as Michail and crossed out the Sincerely in Yours Sincerely. Not a great start to extracting something from the man. The key to this is Harris would like to build the permanent Harris Nunhead at thier Harris East Dulwich Girls Academy. The key to this is Southwark COuncil as a planning authority. If Harris can do this then they clearly wont be on the hopsital site. The Education Finance Agency (EFA) would be delighted to make this change as it would not require any land purchase. I would hope more could be extracted via the planning process and S106 from the EFA as a consequence for the local area.
