  1. Trevor Christie photo show early Carnegie cancellation Last week I posted up about Trevor Christie's long-awaited photo show at the Carnegie Library. It was a great Private View for opening night, nice turnout. But Trevor has has to pull the plug on the show early - it was meant to run through the 31st. He's sorry about that. He says: "due to work related issues the show will be made available at another venue". But he has updated his Flickr page to include the show photos, which were fewer but much larger than expected. You can see these at:
  2. New Photography Exhibition from Trevor Christie at the Carnegie Library! Private view this Friday You may recall in summer I bigged up Trevor Christie's photography exhibition at the Diverse Gallery in Brixton. Great show. And then I wondered where his next show would happen. Turns out, it is happening in Herne Hill and at the Carnegie Library no less! Max Rush's colour wildlife, portrait, and landscape work makes way for TC's more stark and urban and chiefly black and white work ... such a great venue for it too - wonderful juxtaposition. This show runs from Private View on Friday 20 January (7pm to 9pm) until Tues 31 Jan. Phone the Carnegie for general opening times - 020 7926 6050. The library, for those of you who don't know where it is located (didn't you go visit it during Open House London??), can be found at 188 Herne Hill Road. SE24 0AG for you sat navers! It should be a similar body of work as at the Diverse show (with a few new interesting additions, see below if I can manage to attach anything to the EDF!). Which then amounted to approx 200 mainly B&W prints - all traditional "analogue" photography not digital. 35mm film stock and hand done prints. That exhibition was titled 'Steel and Glass' as these represent the main components of the traditional camera. This show is just called 'Photography'. There's bound to be a broad range of subject matter - most of it urban (aka 'street') portraiture portraying lean, stark and confused times but doing so with a sense of wonder. Timeless gritty begging beauty. Shadows, ghosting and blurring blending reportage with impression - some photos reminiscent of 40s and 50s urban realism but layered with an ethereal quality due to imperfection only tactile photography and its processing can bring. It is fantastic that Trevor is showing at the Carnegie, also a timeless place yet one which could do with a shot of cutting-edge and something more in tune with our confusing times. It is a beautiful, much-loved building but faces grave difficulties in future, faced as it is with closure in the not-too-distant future unless cash can be raised to keep it afloat. Lambeth have already put it on their death list. People read less, it is hard to heat and service, and without the many volunteers who put in time gratis, it may already have been shut. But this show is a wonderful opportunity for people who don't use libraries in a traditional fashion (or don't read anymore, except perhaps on their Kindle or Kogan) to come in for something different. There's a lot worse than the local library becoming a local art gallery (more ideas anyone?) and for all of you traditionalists out there, take heart! What with his 35mm approach, Trevor is a traditionalist too! So ... ome support local photography, use your local library, and show support for the Carnegie, all in one go! You can see many of Trevor's works on show on his Flickr web pages and these include print titles as well as notes: But you'd do so much better seeing these in person to fully appreciate them. Digital can never do them justice!
  3. Elvis was spotted in East Dulwich today along Northcross Road and in Grove Vale by Shaun's DIY! Also in Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill outside Kindreds Bakery, and in Camberwell Church Street near Hermit's Cave and in Tadim's Cafe. The King left the building with his good friend Davey Jones who has been publicizing his free Elvis Tribute Night at Hooper's Bar (SE5 8DH) tonight. So Elvis will be back in the building very soon. The pair was spotted and photographed by street photographer Phil! See attached composite!
  4. No, not the same T Christie! for any of you interested in the trevor christie show - just had an email from trevor to say that the diverse gallery show has been extended till the 10th, and he also says that he has a CONFIRMED later closing of 10pm. regarding a showing in CP which you mention sylvester, that sounds like a good thing and perhaps if you have any venue ideas you could contact trevor on [email protected] 'Steel and Glass' by Trevor Christie at Diverse EXTENDED TILL SEPT 10TH THIS EXHIBITION HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL SEPT 10TH. FOR ANY OF YOU WHO MAY HAVE GONE DOWN LAST SAT. FOR A 10PM CLOSING ONLY TO GET SHUTTERS, APOLOGIES FOR AN EARLIER THAN EXPECTED GALLERY CLOSE THEN. WHILE I AM TOLD A LATER 10PM CLOSE IS CONFIRMED FOR THE FINAL DAY ON THE 10TH, YOU MIGHT STILL BE BEST ADVISED TO RING UP THE GALLERY FIRST ON 0207 733 1488.
  5. Stumbled across a remarkable exhibition of street photography yesterday by Herne Hill resident and photographer, Trevor Christie. Sadly, there are just two days left for this show - it ends Saturday night, September 3rd, at 10pm. But the good news is that you still have time to catch it. Well worth doing so. Something like 300 B&W and colour prints covering 4 walls at Diverse Gallery which is located at 62 Atlantic Road. What's really nice is that this is traditional photography not digital. 35mm film stock and hand done prints. The exhibition is titled 'Steel and Glass' as these represent the main components of the traditional camera. There's a broad range of subject matter but most of it is urban portraiture which portrays lean, stark and confused times but does so with a sense of wonder. This magically transforms gritty into beauty and lends it a timelessness. Shadows, ghosting and blurring blend reportage with impression - some photos are reminiscent of 40s and 50s urban realism but are layered with an ethereal quality due to imperfection only tactile photography and its processing can bring. You can see many of the works on show on his Flickr web pages and these include print titles as well as notes ( ) but you'd do so much better seeing these in person to fully appreciate them. Digital doesn't do them justice. Was told the exhibition is open today from 11am-7pm and closes tomorrow at 10pm. This is news but I guess it is also a review. So I'd better rate it. OK then, 5 stars out of 5. See you down Atlantic Rd.
  6. UPDATE We've been told that the free taster classes at the Lido on Sunday are exactly the same as on Saturday. All are first come, first served. PT Cycle from 10-11am Hatha Yoga from 2:30-3:30pm Tai Chi from 3-4 pm Bridal Circuit from 3-4pm More info 0207 274 3088. Or check out the Gym & Spa Users Forum on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brockwell-Lido-Gym-Spa-User-Forum/189173027789769 And don't forget to give us a like!
  7. As this is the Lounge and the weather this weekend is supposed to be nice, I figured I should get back on here and tell you that the Brockwell Lido is kicking off its swim season a month earlier than usual this weekend and to mark the occasion is also offering free swimming all weekend, from 9-4pm. If you're interested in getting your mug and slimline body (har!) in somebody's book, there'll be a photographer taking snaps of folks plunging into the undoubtedly "cool" waters at 10am. Also free of charge will be taster classes in the Lido studios. There are 4 we know of so far, and they are scheduled for Saturday: PT Cycle from 10-11am Hatha Yoga from 2:30-3:30pm Tai Chi from 3-4 pm Bridal Circuit from 3-4pm More are planned for Sunday. You can do the gym and spa for free as well within the aforementioned hours. So we've been told by Fusion. Perhaps best to ring the Lido to confirm times and places, also to find out about Sun. if we haven't manage to post further here: 0207 274 3088. Or check out the Gym & Spa Users Forum on Facebook. Hopefully Fusion will get on there and post something once they know - we've asked them to. Reminder of the FB pathway: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brockwell-Lido-Gym-Spa-User-Forum/189173027789769 And don't forget to give us a like!
  8. It is a long lease which Lambeth created with Fusion. I liked Paul Maier too ... Jeremy as well. We had lots of pow wows. He helped start the Modern Movement too. And agreed his replacement was very hard work and did some outrageous stuff. But she was yanked after protest (nearly a sit-in in December) and am encouraged by her replacement so far. He has allowed us to display handbills for the facebook around the dryside of the place and put some up himself. This is one of the reasons for the facebook thing. if you want to be read, go on it and add your comments. both the manager and BLU seem to be reading the wall. I'm not sure they will come to the ED forum. I appreciate what you say about the bulletin board - we should be on there too. We are trying to get on it now. Meeting some resistance but one of the facebook administrators met with BLU heads this week and brought it up again.
  9. I've posted something like this before (a few weeks ago) elsewhere on the ED Forum but it got shifted to biz and trades, but this isn't a trade or really a business, so I'm thinking maybe The Lounge is the right place. In case you didn't know, spring may have sprung, and the Brockwell Lido opens the pool this weekend. The Brockwell Lido is holding a free open weekend to mark the start of its 2011 swimming season on April 2 and 3rd. Swimming will be free to all comers, and there will also be a range of free poolside activities and taster classes in the studios. Personally, I'd bring a wetsuit as it hasn't been all that warm yet - but a "shorty" would do and Decathlon sell them for under 20 quid. That's the big news and maybe it sounds like business. But we represent a user forum and for us it isn't about selling tickets. We set up a forum to improve services. So it's about community. And the Lido is year round and is about more than the pool for 6 months. There is also a really nice gym and spa there, there are loads of interesting classes and there is also Whippersnappers who run activities for kids as well as martial arts classes. Whippersnappers have been around since 1994 and just had their Talent Show final on Friday! The winner was ... Abdoulie! Some of we 'dry side' users recently started our Facebook forum to better be able to get to know each other as well as feed back (both positives and negatives) to BLU (the Brockwell Lido Users Group which tends to the 'wet side' or pool or pool-related like the very nice cafe there) and to Fusion, who run the whole place on a long lease from Lambeth. So these are basically community campaign pages inasmuch as we felt changes were needed but we weren't being heard terribly well. The other good news is that Fusion has hired a new manager in to run the place and he reads our wall. He also comes from a sport background and isn't just a corporate vendor with a degree in business administration, which is like oasis in a desert! It's always hard launching something like this and getting attention, so check it out and give it a "like"! It helps us get taken more seriously by management. If you're on Facebook, that is. You don't need to be on Facebook to look at the stuff but if you are, you're welcome to add your comments! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brockwell-Lido-Gym-Spa-User-Forum/189173027789769 Or just search up Brockwell Lido Gym & Spa User Forum in Facebook ... or Google it! Thanks!
  10. yeah i have had this twice and the latest is petrol tank cap tampering. flashing LED and ensuring there's nothing in sight to tempt ... leaving glovebox open? a door reweld usually costs 50 quid so what a pain!
  11. If you use the Lido and in particular the gym or spa there, or take classes ... or are just curious about the facility ... some of us users have started a Facebook forum to better be able to get to know each other as well as feed back (both positives and negatives) to BLU (the Brockwell Lido Users Group) and to Fusion, who run the place. These are basically community pages. It's always hard launching something like this and getting attention, so check it out and give it a "like"! If you're on Facebook, that is. You don't need to be on Facebook to look at the stuff but if you are, you're welcome to add your comments! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brockwell-Lido-Gym-Spa-User-Forum/189173027789769
  12. *** CORRECTION: BROCKWELL LIDO SWIMMING SEASON SCHEDULED to start FRIDAY 7TH MAY at 6.30am *** BLU has just learned that the pool opening which was planned for Monday 3rd May has had to be delayed because of a tricky technical problem which involved having to get a part from Germany and recruit engineers to fit it. Unfortunately, this wasn't discovered until after we sent out our Spring Newsletter. We don't have sufficient funds to send a correction to our postal members. So please pass the word around to all your Lido-loving friends. Looking on the bright side, the water should be warmer by the 7th if this sunny weather keeps going. There is a very small chance that repairs will be done earlier. Please watch our Twitter feed, website or the Lido Fusion site for breaking news. Free swimming for people aged 60 and over or with a disability There is some good news! There will be free swimming for the whole swimming season, from pool opening in May through to the end of September for everyone aged 60 or over, or for anyone with a disability. Don't forget your ID! Modern Movement - Saturday 1st May We will have a stand at the Lido's Modern Movement event on Saturday 1st May (10am-4pm) Please come and talk to us.
  13. brixton rec is pretty close but they have problems too - ongoing changing room refurb meant to have been done in 8 wks, now going on 16 or more. they promise may, i imagine june at the outside. at least it is open tho last i heard no swim access between 12-6 and street access has been weird. and you need to climb up to level 6 to change and then trek down again on a skinny stairwell. poor disabled access! but at least as opposed to camberwell and dulwich refits (11-12 month schedules! of course there's always a delay fair weather or foul, it wouldn't be council-linked works without screwups) you can swim there. brockwell lido opens for swimming soon though, may 4th i believe. but the water will be freezing - those easterly winds are still coming in cold. get a wetsuit. they have painted some nice lido memoirs inside the pool you can read when swimming and i hear they'll be using a non-chlorine agent in the water which makes it softer on eyes and hair ... they already use it in their spa's jacuzzi. in part because chlorine is quickly dissolved by UV, driving up cost.
  14. my cat ignores mice too - either too cold or old ... but i found dosing entry and exit points with peppermint essential had some good effect
  15. are you are the ground is safe under new landlord? i've heard that's a transport company and the ground is only safe for 5 years after which the area will become either flats or more shopping ...
  16. There's also Fischer Athletic at that ground for I think at least another year. Their owner put in the new bar and returfed the pitch and put in sprinklers. Greek shipping magnate I believe. Fischer made the playoffs last year for promotion to Blue Square Premiere (old FA Conference) and just missed out. So its possible for a team playing at Hamlets to bounce up to the Championship in short order if they did a Bristol City! At least there is that dream! If you're tired of forking out 30 quid to see route one football at Palace or Millwall or Charlton (nevermind the more expensive West Ham option), Hamlets is a bargain at 8 quid. And I always say that if you get two evenly matched teams playing each other - even if it is a relegation battle - it can be great. You don't get the "big show" you have in a ground packed with 15,000 plus, but if you love footy does it need to be an event? Although I will say AFC Wimbledon got it right with the food - since its a fan-owned club, fans had some say in the catering, and have to admit when I went last season I was really impressed with the quality of the organic burgers and sausages! Simon Jordan could learn a lot.
  17. its not just more knife crime for east dulwich. there have been more robberies, more assaults, more car breakins, etc. i look at lordship lane and wonder how it can sustain so many new boutiques while we head into a recession and while rents are so expensive. and note all the new estate agents (even in camberwell, where i live). money follows money (even if there's generally less of it) and that also means more moneyed places will attract crime like a magnet.
  18. I dunno about poptarts but I say about time for decent grub! I've only ever been in there a few times over the years (and that includes The Ivanhoe years - shame the name was changed ... tradition down the pan .. but then the owner isn't a Londoner I hear) but I know it always had a foremost reputation as a boozer. Food clears that up. Even as a boozer it did better when even limited food was happening. Plus its a great option for folks who don't want alcohol! There's always the Hermits Cave in Camberwell for an old stylee boozer. Still, I've heard that Jamie is a funny old guy. He gets nice beer in but I heard he had a weird, sort of abusive bartender in there for ages before that changed. I know people who tried to get stuff going in there musicwise and foodwise but its like he wasn't into it unless he originated the idea, or found the talent (or founded the kitchen) himself. Which is a shame because that blows out a nice traditional element too. Still, all hail to some kind of food and I hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
