  1. I hit Brockwell 30 minutes into my 3.5 hour prelondon marathon long run at about 9am and it is a bugger to be overtaken by 100 runners, including people pushing children in buggies and indeed children pushing themselves. Looks like a great run though. The chap who wins it every week is an impressive athlete.
  2. Haskell, who I'd always thought of as a gym bunny with no rugby brain, has been consistently good this 6 nations. He was on the pitch as his old partner in dodginess Doran-jones I see.
  3. Have you heard about Mossbourne Academy in Hackney? It's run along similar lines from what I can tell, with a strong focus on dscipline. And its results, in an area far more deprived than ED, and on the site where the once great Hackney Downs collapsed into sink school status, are jaw-dropping.
  4. I'd recommend giving Dulwich Ballet School a call. Based at St Faith's Centre, Red Post Hill. My daughter started classes there at 2 and a half and has loved it ever since - she's now 6 and has done 2 exams. The teachers are lovely, there are open classes once a term, the girls get to wear pink, and there's a big room for them to get changed and you to sit and wait while the class is going on (unusual for ballet schools - don't have one at Grafton). They don't usually have a waiting list. Damzel - I'm pretty certain the reason they won't have got to your email yet is that the whole school has been immersed in their bi-annual show at Alleyn's theatre - Swan Lake, Carnival of the Animals - definitely worth persisting with a phone call.
  5. Hi have you had to decide already? If not, hope this is helpful. My daughter's at HHS, since kindergarten (the current Head's been in post throughout, so not really new anymore). We've just done the Year 3 assessments and she was lucky enough to get offers from Alleyn's, JAPS and Sydenham. I think the end of Year 2 cut-off and the assessments are definitely stressful for parents, but I'm not sure how stressful for the children - my daughter and her friends seemed to enjoy them. What HHS is really good at is: a. preparing them thoroughly for the assessments, and b. giving you frank (and accurate) advice about which schools to go for. I don't know masses about Rosemead, though I've only ever heard good things, and when I visited, I thought the children were lovely. I think a lot of it depends on whether you have a view about where you want your children to end up - if you're keen on the Dulwich schools, then that's HHS's USP - if those schools are right for your children, they'll do their very best to get them in. Rosemead doesn't prepare children for Year 3 entrance assessments because it doesn't need to. But Rosemead kids do have to move at 11+, and that strikes me as potentially more stressful for them than moving at 7.

Aside from the Year 3 issue, my daughter's had a fantastic time at HHS - it is quite structured, and they do stretch the children, but not beyond what they can cope with, as far as I can see. And because it's an early years specialist, the Year 2 kids do get to be top of the school, which is great for their confidence. Also, lovely school buildings and playground with a little wood at the back.

    Good luck with your decision.

  6. Hell's teeth: a couple of dodgy reviews and the place stands condemned. The doves is a fine place, with a lot of soul. And Mark Dodds is a hero! The food's always been a bit average, but easily on a par with most pubs hereabouts.
  7. "these low level crimes go on all the time"

I don't think that's right. I know from experience that you can get a significant spike in muggings and burglarys in areas, usually a result of a few people targeting an area. There's a prima facie case that this is what's happening here. The Police will have a view on this, based on the levels of reported crime in certain areas, and if they concur will be targeting the hot areas for surveilance.

"I can't help wondering what the point is of reporting on the forum"

Well it is most important that crime is reported to the Police of course. But surely anything that heightens people's awareness of where there might be a spike in an area of a certain type of activity is a good thing (largely).

Anyway, sympathy to all those affected.

  8. If I had a counter-argumnet, it would be that, within reason, we should offer support to people fighting for democracy and human rights. In extremis, this might mean military support.

In ten years, Libya could be a fully functioning democracy, where human rights and the rule of law are enshrined and where the citizens drive around in electric cars and carry re-usable bags bearing the legend "Tripoli Says "La" To unwanted Bags
