  1. OK, well Kings's Cross was a somewhat arbitrary underground station, although your suggestion is close to useless at weekends when I do travel there. Try putting in Westminster, Liverpool Street, Angel and many more as alternative stations to demonstrate the original contention.
  2. Danielson00. That mocked up map is interesting. It seems that the volume of trains through East Dulwich is low and it could take a few extra trains from the Overland. It shows how a small change can yield interesting results. I've always felt that something like that coupled with East Dulwich -> London Bridge trains running through to Charing Cross would be a game changer.
  3. I see that the Greens have highlighted this issue amongst others: http://www.sianberry.london/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/FaresBriefingJan2016LondonGreenParty_FINAL.pdf East Dulwich even gets a mention! Hopefully, as Wulfhound suggested, the next mayoral election will lead to improvements.
  4. Absolutely and things can change with enough will. It had been highlighted previously that because of the labyrinthine fare structure in London, kids in North London got free travel ands kids in large parts of South London did not; this was remedied it just needed an agreement between TFL and the rail operators. I'd like to see something done about adult fares now. I guess that you're a cycle commuter cyclemonkey, and we in particular, the occasional rail traveller, are hit by this. To provide another example of this nonsense, it's actually a pound cheaper to travel from Forest Hill to Kings Cross than East Dulwich to Kings Cross.
  5. This throws up some interesting numbers. https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/fares/single-fare-finder For example, a peak fare from East Dulwich to Kings Cross comes in at ?4.30. However, if one travels from Peckham Rye and avoids London Bridge via some convoluted route, it is possible to travel for ?2.90. So, not only are we provided with a shabby service into London Bridge, but we have to pay a substantial premium on many journeys for the privilege.
  6. Jeremy's recommendations plus The Sirens of Titan - Kurt Vonnegut The Demolished Man- Alfred Bester The Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury
  7. I agree with Gill and Joe. I am witnessing the breakdown of an acquaintance's marriage after going through the stress of a building project that was essentially a vanity project. If you really, really need to go through the stress and expense, then go for it. If you do not and feel that there is any risk that the burden of it will be too great, then my advice would be to run like the wind and put your energies into something else...

Sounds like a fun game. Get to enjoy the glow of universal adoration for a while, then have a quiet dig at the grouchy neighbours when they come out to remonstrate with the unruly mob.
  9. I don't really understand Germany's role in all of this. Would a correct analogy be a bank employee announcing to London "come to my office for free money" then locking his office door and leaving the receptionists to deal with the ensuing stampede and panic? Seems a mess all round.
  10. Assuming that Harris intend to pursue this. Is it really wise to pursue such a disingenuous path, against the stated aims of the community, when Harris's fear is that the local community will become less interested in their schools?
  11. James, why do you think that it might impact planning position? Would someone oppose it because there is a possibility that their child might not get in? A "if my child might not get into the new school then no-one should" mentality. If there are enough people in ED with that mindset to have an impact, that is a truly depressing thing.
  12. My initial response to these Guardian pieces was irritation, I like London and will generally defend it. However, the middle classes are a malleable and willing herd. So, if these articles encourage people to leave and make London a little less crowded by the chattering classes, then fine.

  14. Isn't the school going over and above the recommended policy? Or am I mininterpreting thing? https://www.education.gov.uk/consultations/downloadableDocs/6757-SchoolAdmissionsCode.pdf#page43 "Children with special educational needs but without statements must be treated as fairly as other applicants".
  15. "But they will still want an EU/EMEA presence - it is still one of the biggest and most important markets. And German workers, the German legal system and GMT+1 would be a more than acceptable alternative." Agreed. But, equally it would offer an oppotunity for the UK to open up trade globally, liberalise the labour market and generally reduce the burden of regulation and as such make it a more attractive prospect. A relatively small proportion of our GDP is gained from Europe and we run a massive trade deficit with the rest of Europe. This http://www.europarl.org.uk/resource/static/files/global-vision-paper-lr.pdf rather long and complex analysis demonstrates that as far as business is concerned it would probably be a relatively neutral thing. The head of Deutsche bank may say otherwise, but the heads of banks have got a lot of things wrong in recent years. However, for Brexit to succeed a certain amount of preparation would be needed, trade deals etc.
