  1. Super Sleuth, the photo was rather zoomed in and a bit blurred so it's entirely possible. I've updated the police report to consider both.

Jeans stained with mud and paint but don't want to inspect further in case I contaminate.

Can't say the police have shown any interest so far. At what point do I stand down from my amateur detective role?!

  2. Thanks - with more presence of mind next time I shall. Always difficult to react when you're at the wheel of a car yourself at the time.

Interestingly, the registration number (my passenger snapped a photo) at DVLA is not found which usually means a scrapped car, fake plate or some kind of government or undercover vehicle. Even if this were in some way official police business, the risks being taken by the driver were absolutely astonishing.

And then of course there were those jeans, almost the most perplexing element of the story..

  3. Does anyone know if you can report dangerous driving? There was just an Audi that pulled out of Melbourne Grove onto EDG heading to Herne Hill.

A pair of jeans was thrown out of the window outside the church and then the car drove aggressively into traffic on the wrong side of the street all the way to JAGS and then sped through red lights into the distance.

I'm almost certain the car must be stolen, no-one who owned a car like that would drive it that way. Reg was NA66 OTC, Audi Q3 or 5.

  4. I believe James Barber previously posted something about the split ownership of the pavements, given that they're essentially part of a public thoroughfare. I believe he said there was some mechanism that could allow the council to force the private owners to maintain their sections appropriately - at least to keep them flat and level with the council-maintained section - and that, if they did not do so, the council would do it for them at their cost.

At the very least, when they were relaying endless sections of pavement last year, they could have come to an extremely cost-effective arrangement with those owners to get the pavement in order. The additional work involved would have been trifling and of such enormous benefit to the community. But why would we expect Southwark to spend time on such things? They spent a quarter of a million doing a pointless rehash of the entrance to NXR for crying out loud. At some times of the day LL is a total affront to health and safety and Southwark is an affront to us all.

  5. Lordship Lane has always been awful and then, instead of coming to a cost-effective arrangement with the traders' portion of pavements, Southwark massively compounded the issue by repaving only the narrow public sections. It is now highly unlikely this will be revisited in the foreseeable future and, you are quite right, the result is an utter disgrace. Shameful doesn't come close to describing the lack of vision and community-spirit displayed on this.

Another utter disgrace is the now years-long issue of a badly needed crossing at LL and EDG. Something which would benefit everyone and particularly the disabled.

Dealing with these issues is what the council is for and their inaction over a decade and more is inexcusable.

  6. I utterly detest Virgin Media also. But sadly no-one else is offering their speeds (admittedly when it's actually working) and won't for some very considerable time. They essentially have a monopoly over genuinely high speed broadband. There was a Hyperoptic van in the neighbourhood the other week and I quickly registered my interest but it seems they're about 3 years away from coming to ED.

Tonight's fix has miraculously doubled our speeds back up to what they were 3 years ago. So I'll no doubt be grinning and bearing my need for VM :-(

  7. What I don't understand is why residents who live just outside the zone are not permitted to buy a permit. Commuters were the clear and intended target of the whole exercise so the fact that residents like us will inevitably suffer huge inconvenience is intolerable and utterly unfair.
  8. I've had a really really good look at all the information on Southwark's 'bins and recycling' website and all of its subsections. I can't find any information at all regarding the positioning of bins. Can someone point me to where I can find these new 'rules?'
  9. I have partial sympathy with the op as there is absolutely no reason for sirens to be as loud as they are in this country. They could be far quieter and still achieve the same result. No other country tolerates such fearsome noise on their emergency vehicles - here the intention seems to be to frighten the life out of people which doesn't help motorists to make quick, intelligent decisions. It induces panic and that doesn't help anyone. I'm less concerned about its effect on gardeners though.
  10. First of all, the development plans were included in the last members newsletter. I know this because I'm a longstanding member myself and I read it with interest.

Second, as they point out themselves, the entire estate is Grade II or II* listed so their intentions will automatically receive massive scrutiny and oversight.

The museum has been there over 120 years and I agree wholeheartedly with the identified shortcomings of the current structure and layout. Whatever the original design and how the gardens may or may not have been intended to be used back then is close to irrelevant for the present day. That there may be extensive building work over a long period is never accepted as a reason to object in itself. What matters is the end result.

I personally think that, on first reading, some of the plans are very sympathetic and yet innovative and energising to an massively popular local attraction that needs to evolve and serve a wide demographic way beyond that of decades ago.

An institution of this kind must necessarily keep pace with the times and I congratulate them on their plans which I think the farsighted, groundbreaking founder would have endorsed without reservation.

  11. No one has ever asked me to or complained that we don't in 15 years and, like I say, no one on our road has ever done this. We have barely enough room in our yard to store the bins at all and if we put them on the pavement there'd hardly be enough room for pedestrians. Buggies would find it totally impassable. I consider myself content that they collect the bins because I pay them to.
