  1. The original question was polite and considerate. Shame that uncleglen couldn't extend the same courtesy in his response. uncleglen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The Bye-Laws are on the gates of the park.....I > don't think you are allowed to inflict your music > on others using the park for one thing

Ingrid, a possible suggestion - the calligrapher Seb Lester was asking for a mural space earlier this year. He does really beautiful typographic pieces - it's hard to imagine anyone not liking them. He said: "I really want to do a big mural this year. A big piece of art, most probably a beautiful and inspiring quote, on a big wall somewhere. The location could be in the UK, or somewhere in Europe possibly. I'm thinking maybe roughly 3 metres by 6 metres. I would be grateful for any suggestions on where I could do that, legally obviously."
  3. Just to play devil's advocate... we've just had our front garden paved over for parking. We don't own a car, but we want to make it easier for elderly relatives who have mobility problems but cannot reliably get a parking spot near our house (because all the people driving to the nearby gym clog up the street). We paved with granite stones reclaimed from another driveway, and left soil beds all around the edges to provide sustainable urban drainage. We will be planting in these beds. My point is - not every paved driveway indicates gas-guzzling, car-obsessed, environment-hating, selfish homeowners. But of course urban creep is a real issue and paving has to be done responsibly.
  4. Are you sure it wasn't pomegranate juice? 'Grenade' is French for pomegranate; hand grenades were named after pomegranates because of their similar shape. I always liked that bit of trivia :) Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A friend took a photo of a juice bar with hand > grenade juice on the menu (it seems that > 'pineapple' is slang for grenade, hence the dodgy > translation).
  5. I'm not the OP, but can anyone tell me where there is a bra bank locally? Or, siousxiesue do you take bras at St Christopher's?
  6. Edit: Retracted post. Not worth getting into.

There's now an online booking system called Patient Access which works wonderfully - no more waiting to get through on the phone. You have to register on their website to use it. More info here: http://www.thegardenssurgery.co.uk/patient-access-booking-appts.html I've received great service at The Gardens and would recommend it to anyone in the catchment area.
  8. Do they have wifi there? Is it a good place to go alone with a laptop and get some work done over a sandwich and coffee?
  9. I can't help I'm afraid, but I would recommend posting this on the London sub-reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/london/ to cast the net a bit wider. Good luck!

    Hipsters

I haven't read every page so apologies if I'm repeating something already said, but I just have to laugh at the irony of Otta criticising the 'hipsters' at DHFC with an argument that boils down to "I liked Dulwich Hamlets before it was cool". I think I know who the real hipster is here...

If you had ever been on the receiving end of unwanted physical advances by strangers, you would know that there is no upside.
  12. This is also causing chaos at the other end of the line. I commute to West Croydon and it's a constant mystery as to whether my train will actually turn up, whether it will leave on time, leave late or simply be cancelled. Often when it does actually run, they make it into a fast train to London Bridge. These cancellations and changes to fast trains are almost never announced over the PA. Thankfully, Croydon is a relatively quiet station so we're spared the overcrowding. The advice to check with the train operator before travelling is a joke when the website shows different information to the station display screens, and usually both are wrong. Announcements over the PA at West Croydon are virtually nonexistent. I literally shed tears of frustration yesterday evening. Disruption would be so much easier to bear if they would just tell us in an honest and timely way what is actually going on.

For the record, Franco Manca is the only pizza chain I know of which has a vegan pizza (i.e. no meat or dairy) listed on their menu. Rocca in Dulwich Village also has one, but I'm not sure whether that could be called a chain (two branches).
  14. I thought it was weird that they focused on the Horniman - I wouldn't really say that's East Dulwich....
  15. Pretty's, do you have any tapas that are suitable for vegans?
  16. njc97, thanks, yes I know what it is, that's why I'm keen to figure out where I can find it! Sounds brilliant!
  17. Where exactly is Four Quarters? I kept an eye out for it while passing through Rye Lane recently but didn't see it... I must have missed it.
  18. I'm sure they will make all of this money back come November, when I commence throwing a lot of pizza down my cakehole.
  19. Looks like Franco Manca are now aiming to open in November. On Twitter, they said on 7 Sept: "november ! - we've been throwing a lot of money down a very big hole". On 12 Sept they posted this photo of the interior as it currently looks: https://twitter.com/FrancoMancaPizz/status/510339028290637824/photo/1 And if you look further back on the Twitter timeline there are references to the building work being more complex than originally hoped - e.g. "building snags - have to get it right" and "we are digging a very big hole and then filling it in again". So, it looks like a lot is going on behind those hoardings.
  20. Lillyrose, congratulations on your new premises - your shop sounds like great fun and I will definitely come in when it's open. There are many grumpy people on this forum so don't mind them. It's a shame to see the old sweet shop going but as their products are now in John Lewis, WHSmith etc I'm not surprised by the news - clearly their empire is growing into bigger and arguably better things.
  21. If I'm reading the plans correctly (I may not be), it looks like they're sacrificing the basement in order to flatten out the previous 'raised middle' that the ground floor had. Sounds like a smart move to me - as much as I liked the Draft House, it was a weird layout - but it is probably going to take significantly more work to achieve than your average interior fit-out.

  23. I know they were recently (last week? or week before?) filming the TV show 'Youngers' on Bellenden Road. The series is set in Peckham. Could have been that.
  24. Sorry lemerson, I don't think your objection is founded. If the problem can be solved by building as little new infrastructure as possible, that saves public money and minimises the impact to the environment of the new construction. The soft defences will co-exist alongside the park. From what I can see on the council website it looks like none of the existing park facilities will be lost - they will only be temporarily out of order if this 1 in 75 year event (which sounds like a fairly extreme case to me) does happen. So, it's statistically likely that this will happen only once every 75 years - but it could even be less often than that. As for Tellytubbies, the images published by the council don't look like anything of the sort - these are gentle and quite small slopes, not large hills. The flood meadows are new areas of planting within existing parkland which will add visual interest and help biodiversity, while again taking away none of the park facilities. You suggest that the floodwaters should be diverted to open fields elsewhere in the area. Obviously I don't know the exact details but it's probably safe to assume that if this is even technically possible it will be significantly more costly, complex and disruptive to build, and the new construction will have a greater impact on the environment. It's just not worth all of that to avoid closing the park for what is statistically likely to be a matter of days in a 75 year period. lemerson Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > jomou Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > These proposals sound perfectly sensible, not > to > > mention being much more environmentally > friendly, > > > > > In fact, the proposals do contain new drainage > in > > the form of flood meadows etc which hold more > > water than a flat lawn - > > Hang on - so the plans include losing a large > grass area where local people play, eat picnics, > and relax all year round, over many years, and > replace that permanently with a "flood meadow" > scheme for the 1 in 75 year storm?!
