I think there are other forms of prejudice that are prevalent in football - the clubs, the players, the supporters. Could there be a way of using a gesture or a symbol or a minute's silence etc. that would act to say all forms of bigotry are not tolerated in the game? (I don't like football and so have no skin in the game but I do recognise that the beautiful game is not that attractive in a number of ways even though it is immensely popular and brings great joy to many.)

Dunstans is a road of who halves (well, 2/3 really) with the bit from Goodrich up to the junction with Upland having larger houses and some really long gardens (though this is also the case with some houses between Goodrich and Underhill). The school traffic really could be a lot less but that would require greater input from the school (which pushed against LTNs and other measures, according to council members I have been in touch with) so that is a bit of a letdown. Dawson's Hill is great for wildlife and greenery and the short but strenuous walk up it can reward you with great views. Also, is there an apostrophe or not? Is it like King's Cross, where it was eventually put back after having lost it for years?

I agree that pettyfogging rules about bike sheds in front gardens are a pain, but I have seen some that are much taller than the average bicycle that, in small front yards, must affect the amount of light that gets into windows of the owner and the neighbour. Why do they need to be so tall? It's not a big deal but I don't like the idea that anything can be installed at any height; it just looks unpleasant when it could look more pleasing to the eye.

Yes - a mini power cut meant the alarm went off and lights wouldn't work but for only a few seconds.

I have seen more bees (bumble-type) on the pavement, not being able to fly or looking a bit bewildered, this year than ever before. I fed one some honey but don't know what happened to it. Is it too warm for them?

Dunstan?s at Underhill has 2 x monitoring strips.

Putting a child with no safety belt or helmet on a motorised, lightweight scooter ridden by someone who may not be much older themselves on roads and pavements is never a good idea, even in your Whatabout World.
-
Yeah, great idea - why not plonk a child on it and zip off down a crowded street, mount a pavement or two! Such larks!

Air pollution in East Dulwich - what can we do?
Nigello replied to tomszekeres's topic in The Lounge
I disagree - if you have a bus that ocmes every ten minutes and a car sitting outsdie, you are always going to choose your car, even if you know the trip will likely be a bit stressful and parkign will be likely hard to find. More buses won't mean those little journeys that add up will go away. Just walk more and you'll feel better for it. A trip of 1km in a car is less than a few minutes' walk. Sheesh! -
Pedestrianisation looks great in teh sunshine (as well as in glossy brochures and blissed-out computer generated images) but not so much on a wet, November Tuesday night. It was fashionable in the sixties and seventies to tarmac over living streets but the results were often mixed, if not downright negative. Rye Lane sounds good in meetings and on overlaid agency videos, but really, is it better to have no buses at all?

Air pollution in East Dulwich - what can we do?

I fear this "gabfest" will attract people who have their own views already fixed in stone - preaching to the converted or wanting to express their opposition. Don't talk more, just drive less and walk more and reduce your deliveries. It is simple. Carrots and sticks can help but it is ultimately up to YOU - yes, you - to ditch your vehicle or not. Don't get peeved if you see nobody else doing it - nobody really cares so just do your own thing without looking for a reward (other than self0-satisfaction and a knowledge you are helping, even just a little bit, to lower emissions and reduce congestion). Over to you. -

Walk more. Drive less. Minimise deliveries. 🤷♂️ -
It?s also possible to get a printed confirmation by ringing the NHS number, according to reports I?ve read.

It is in the eye of the beholder. If you (by which I mean, any reader) prefer to see bad intent and use it as an occasion, perhaps, to show your virtue and caring nature, go ahead. Most people understand that a forum is a venue for views of all kinds and that conversations can go off in different directions, still aligned to the main thrust. I am content in my knowledge that I did not mean to belittle anyone's experience - in fact, I stated it quite openly. Some can do as I suggest, some can't - I don't have a hitlist of nurses, bakers, candlestick makers in my head when I make a comment!

Which is precisely why I ccouched it in my placatory terms, with "you" meaning "anyone reading this" - please don't take offence for yourself or anyone else where none was intended.

Disgusting state of corner of Hindmans and Upland Road
Nigello replied to Monkey's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
https://www.southwark.gov.uk/allservices - street care is the one to use in such circumstances. There are other headers that are to do with other areas, like bins, dog fouling, etc. -
This is probably not the reply you want and it is not meant to be dismissive or uncaring, but walking a few extra stops is a good idea. Skip the whole length of the Lane, say, from Whateley down to E Dulwich station, takign advantage of the leafy quietness of Melbourne Grove (!) and burn a few calories to boot. Not everyone can, of course, but many people will be able to do that and may even like it. Sitting on a bus stewing is not ideal for your health, though I understand the frustration and don't want to make light of it.

I love fireworks but I think the tide is turning. I think they should be kept back for N Y Eve and Diamond Jubilee, etc. with a small show for Bonfire Night. I also think they should not be allowed to be bought over the counter. They used to feel special but now they pop and glitter every other week - boring and wasteful.

About three months ago I saw overflowing bins in Dulwich Park after one weekend with 15 degree temperatures and sent a picture to the local councillor and parks manager, suggesting bigger bins and/or more frequent emptying. I also said that other parks had this problem, so perhaps they - in the spirit of thinking ahead and extrapolating evidence - at the council decided to put bigger bins in more than just Dulwich Park? (The big bins there did appear a few weeks after the email was sent, so perhaps not!) I asked also for stickers on the bins suggesting people take their rubbish away if the bin was overflowing, but that has not happened.

Untatty does not equal gentrified. It means just that - neutral/pleasant to look at and certainly not "poshed up for moneyed blow ins". Why tolerate something that is ugly and can be easily improved to everyone's benefit? -

I reported it to the council - 020 7525 2000 (or online). I agree that corner is a mess (not helped by the general tattiness of the shop's exterior! -
I have written to Alleyn's, Jags and Dulwich College to ask what they are doing to prevent congestion and associated noxious emissions from motorised travel to and from their site, and how they plan to improve on their current performance. So much congestion is caused by parents driving their children to these schools, or sending them there in taxis or in coaches (the latter being much more environmentally friendly than if they were travelling via car, granted).
-
Yes, parents who use their children (either as passengers or as alongside-riders) mounting the pavement and thinking it IS OK BECAUSE I HAVE A CHILD are a pain. It's like a middle-class hall pass - I am nice and doing my bit so I should be allowed to barrel along the pavement and impede my fellow citizens who perhaps have no other choice but walk there to get to their destination in the least impactful way possible. If you do it, please stop and allow pedestrians to be, to coin the current parlance, "happy in their own space".
-
I agree that having stuff delivered (especially when you could walk or cycle or wheel to a local supermarket and back) could fill in the gaps left by fewer individual journeys. I do hope nobody on this forum is actually using the corner shop delivery services. If you are, please consider the consequences (apart from your almost instant satisfaction).
