  1. I agree that pedestrianisation can help in some places, but Rye Lane just does not seem right for it, especially the bit from the station to the start of Peckham Rye (ie. Tesco area). I think pedestrianisation here would make it even more unwelcoming, especially at night where there would be no passing traffic of any kind. I like the idea of cleaner air but life is a compromise, so aiming for really low particulates at the expense of life and bustle and a sense of safety and access to transport isn't on. Buses are getting cleaner, trees can be planted and both will help keep pollutants low, much lower than if cars and vans were allowed. Rye Lane has seen better days and I hope that perfection (ie. NO cars, NO emissions) won't be chased because it means bad results in other areas (like sense of liveliness, safety, etc.)
  2. Because the barriers only prevent very local congestion - the cars and the kids in them will likely still come. Perhaps a very few drivers will be deterred but, with the self-deception that so many of us have, most will likely think "oh, it won't be that bad. I can manage to just pull over for a few seconds..." when in reality it is will be much more of a jam. Just don't drive to school. That's the simple message but one very few will act on.
  3. Lloyds is now shut. Smile and First Direct are good options. They are fair and ethical and have good feedback. You could also place it in the N S and I to be in with a chance of winning a million quid every month (unlikely but someone wins the big prize every month and lots of others win smaller ones, but get no interest).

  5. Dear all those concerned about pollution and congestion, Right now the only thing you can do that will have a positive effect is to not drive as much. Not ordering takeaway or home delivery items will also help. It really is that simple, though it will involve a certain amount of deprivation and accommodation of discomfort. Over to you.
  6. I have to be frank and say that I find it hard to believe that everyone I see sans mask in a mask-compulsory environment is being truthful about the condition they say exempts them. There can't be that many people with such severe pulmonary disease, extreme fabric allergy or deep trauma that they cannot wear a face covering. I know there are some, but the number can't be that large. I feel the wool/mask is being pulled over our eyes more often than not (but acknowledge there will be some who are in such a bad way physically or psychologically that the exemption is valid). So, if you are swinging the lead - do us all a favour and tolerate the inconvenience whilst thinking just how you woudl feel if you got ill or made someone else ill, yourself.
  7. The police or wardens rarely issued tickets or even got involved. The Lane deserves better, as do its workers and shoppers.
  8. What is the concern? Are you afraid that you may get a clot? I know it is a bit concerning and that people have different outlooks, but it is very, very, very highly unlikely that you will have anything other than a few chills, a headache and/or a sore arm. Life is about risks - we take them when we wake up, walk down the stairs, eat a chokeable-sized piece of food, etc. etc.
  9. Hansler Road/L Lane - I would say room for at least five but I don't cycle so maybe they can be used by more by doubling up? (Perhaps this is not brand new but I only just saw them. Delete, admin, if old news.)
  10. The ? shops on Rye Lane have lots of mealworms, peanuts, seed, fat balls etc. Great value and (mostly, I think) UK made, so a limited amount of transport miles.
  11. Lime bikes can be (and are) left willy nilly on pavements by inconsiderate hirers which is bad news for pedestrians and/or those with certain disabilities. It?s rare I see one placed unobtrusively on the pavement.
  12. Hello - do you know till which date it will stay open? Thanks
  13. Re helping local business and retail - great to see improvements in appearance of streets, but please link up with BT to clean or remove phoneboxes, Openreach and Virgin to check on and clean/repair street cabinets, and local businesses who benefit from trade but who leave the area on close of business and leave behind unkempt/vandalised street-facing shutters, etc. Many are aware of their responsibilities and benefits of looking inviting but a small minority are not.
  14. The lamppost ones, while welcome, a a bit greenwashy because any car can park next to them, not just EVs.
  15. Council mistake, most likely - it reneged on the original LTN.
  16. Signed. If anyone?s concerned with any business, best to contact them directly to ensure the (valid) point is known.
  17. It?s a stalemate. Both BoJo and Wee Nippy know they could both fail. They also know that people are not necessarily voting this time simply along yes/no lines ? it was an election and not a referendum so support for staying or leaving cannot be extrapolated. More votes went to unionist parties and certain parts of Scotland are very unlikely to support leaving thr UK, meaning a broken up Scotland itself could come about. I don?t think it (Scexit) will happen though I can see a referendum with much more emphasis on fact, not feeling. Sturgeon is a good politician but her supporters are in part just not willing to scrutinise the party?s claims because her (allegedly ?civic?) nationalism sings to their souls. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
  18. I don?t drink takeaway beverages so can?t really understand either the compulsion to buy or the litter-loutishness that go with a ?2+ coffee but it helps the economy, at least. I know that MacD?s sends our staff to litter pick near branches so would that be a good idea for the indies to do, if the workers were doing this as part of their hours, of course?
  19. Bulb effed up my gas meter even though it was the second generation one, which is meant to be more reliable. It doesn?t work, never did, and the new provider isn?t interested in replacing it. Should I go to the ombudsman? Lots of fruitless chasing to clueless phone operators - not their fault they can?t stray from a script.
  20. >>>> The most effective way to keep the rodent population in check, is for people to not leave easily accessible food and garbage for them to eat. ๐Ÿ‘
  21. South facing double glazed windows helps keep it warmish but I do put the heating on for about three hours from 6 or so. (A plumber said to turn off upstairs rads and keep the thermostat at around 17 to aid faster warming.)
  22. The buses ought to be brought back to the Lane. The drivers are on the whole more likely to be cycle-friendly due to training and the presence of a public asset is needed to democratise the street. Rye Lane is part treasure, part midden. Pedestrians and cycles are to be encouraged but not at the expense of those who choose a different way of getting around. I don?t like the feeling of Rye Lane especially near the south end: it?s often empty and just feels lacking life there. The litter and ubiquitous graffiti doesn?t help, but councillors and officers just don?t get involved in the same way they do a mile or so south (cf. LTNs at Melbourne Grove, etc.). ๐Ÿคจ
  23. Good on the council and the councillors who?ve helped clean up some grot spots in SE22. Maybe it will help retail bounce back, at least a bit, after the lockdowns.
