Attached Upper Lip Frenulum - advice needed
anna_r replied to jills's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My 7 month old's top front teeth have just come through with a big gap so I've just checked this and it looks like she has a very obvious frenulum on top too which comes all the way between the teeth. She had posterior bottom tongue tie which was snipped at 4 weeks. Perhaps this top tongue tie also contributed to all the difficulties we had establishing breastfeeding at first too. Something to watch in future I guess. Thanks, very useful thread. -
Some reassurance that i'm not doing a bad job!!!
anna_r replied to jennyh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Back to the original topic jennyh - I don't really have much to add to all the wonderful reassuring responses that everyone else provided. It sounds like you are doing a fantastic job and breastfeeding is most definitely not the be all and end of parenting. Already you have given your baby a great start and it is most important to have a happy mum xx -

Gosh Susyp. I'm so sorry you had to go through what sounds like an incredibly difficult time and I really admire your strength - I can't imagine what it would be like to have breast cancer and deal with such a small baby. Perhaps this may be a discussion topic for another thread. However I did want to respond to your point about breast cancer and breastfeeding as this is something very close to my own heart. My mum died of breast cancer 15 years ago when I was in my teens. I am currently breastfeeding my 7 month old daughter and one of the important reasons for me to carry on breastfeeding was the link that has been found in several studies that breastfeeding reduced the risk of breast cancer, particularly (as far as I understand it) for women with a family history of the disease. For example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1143616/ The research is a detailed analysis of 47 published studies, with nearly 150 000 participants, from 30 countries. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the United Kingdom, with more than 39 000 cases a year. Nearly a third (12 700) are fatal. The research shows that the risk is reduced by 7% for each baby a woman has and that for every 12 months she breast feeds (not necessarily consecutively) she decreases the risk by a further 4.3%. Currently in the United Kingdom 69% of mothers start off breast feeding, but more than half have stopped after four months. The study says that if women breast feed each child for six months longer, 1000 cases of breast cancer a year could be prevented. -

I wish it would go over the hill too. Took the overland yesterday for the first time from HOP which was brilliant. It would make such a difference to have the station more accessible by bus.

Hiring a nanny - some tips please
anna_r replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We found our nanny through SImply CHildcare. Really good website and really helpful on the phone. Saw 6 from there, would definitely have considered three of them. Have been very happy with our nanny (had her 1.5 years now). Also signed up with a reputable agency, who only managed to find 1 candidate, who turned out to be the worst of the lot. My husband and I knew within the first 5 mins it wasn't going to work and had to drag out the rest of the interview to be polite. Also if you find them through an agency the fee they charge is high. Re: questions to ask - here are some I'd suggest (but asked more as a discussion than an interrogation): Why did you become a nanny and why do you enjoy it? (if they answer anything here other than something to do with enjoying working with children then thats an immediate no from me - e.g. one replied 'I like the flexibility it gives me' What relevant qualifications do you have and what did you learn on the course? Tell me about your previous jobs and why you left? What activities would you do with my child? What is a typical routines? Have you ever had any emergencies while working and if so how did you deal with it? How would your previous employers describe you? Are you still in touch with your previous families? What are you nannying strengths and weaknesses? Do you know this area and things to do with children around here? Do you enjoy cooking? What sort of meals would you cook my child? What range of children have you looked after? What are your views on routine/sleep/crying etc What sort of pay do you expect? How long do you hope to spend in your next job? What other jobs around the house do you consider part of the nanny's role? Then you need to look for things like CRB /police check, first aid, check qualifications, check legal to work here (e.g. see passport) and phone all references and speak to them directly (not just email) and listen to how they say things as well as what they say Good luck! I've met lots of lovely nannies in East Dulwich. -
Mundania is 700m from Fairlawn according to the Lewisham website, so it really depends on what happens with regards to bulge classes I guess and in the shakedown. http://www2.lewisham.gov.uk/lbl/streetmap/finder.asp

Thanks for that information Renata - I was also worried about being in the schools black hole (mundania). Surprised about goodrich though since people on ryedale didn't get places there last year? I'd be happy with any of those four.

From NHS website: 9 out of 10 children vaccinated with a single dose will develop immunity against chickenpox http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/varicella-vaccine/Pages/Introduction.aspx I'm not sure what the figure is for later immunity if you catch the disease naturally. Some arguments here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8557236.stm

We had our 2 year old daughter vaccinated against chicken pox just before christmas. It's a personal decision but these were our reasons: a) It is routinely done in the US, Canada, Japan, South Africa etc and my husband is American so we have heard a lot about it being done over there. 41 of the 50 states require immunisation for children going to government run schools b) with a new baby in the house I was worried that having two children with chicken pox at once would be difficult and perhaps dangerous for the baby (at that time 4 months old) c) I had chicken pox quite badly as a child and still have some scars today d) Lower down the list but still a consideration - taking time off work to look after her would have been difficult and might have meant I have to use up my few holiday days which we need to go and visit the inlaws abroad so they can see their grandchildren We went to a clinic on Harley Street recommended on the forum and it was incredibly quick, easy. Daughter didn't make a peep while having it done and there were absolutely no after effects.

It was our first time there as we usually do something else on a Monday. Its a small space though and was quite crowded. Person leading it was very nice though and did a few different things besides all the usual songs.

I know, I forgot my badge - perfect opportunity. My toddler was the one having a full on tantrum outside the door as everyone was trying to get in, in case anyone else saw us. She didn't want to leave the playground and I had to carry her under one arm while pushing pram....not an easy feat as she is very big and was very angry!! Perked up once we were inside though.
