I have used Jackie's design consultation service and would recommend it. It really helped us to consolidate our ideas for the building work we are about to do to our house. Yes, neighbours do get the opportunity to object to a new dropped kerb application.

They only stop people who don't want to inconvienence other people who park in their road. I would have thought if it's extremely difficult to park where you live you won't be as bothered about the needs of others??

James, could you let us know if there is anything we can do about this new double yellow line/dropped kerb issue? I emailed you all the information we received from Southwark and would just like to know if you think there is anyway of fighting it? Thanks.

Having spoken to the man at Southwark who has instigated this new yellow line policy, his view is that all off street parking is a hazard. He said that a 10 metre yellow line each side is what is needed for safety (something to do with braking distances) but that they realised that that wasn't practical so they gone for 2 metres either side. I can't see how it improves safety unless all the ones that are there currently are yellow lined as well?

I don't think many people knows about it as it's a new rule this year and has only just started to happen around the borough. People are going to mind though when double yellow lines start cropping up in front of their houses! I have now asked three councillor for help but am getting nowhere, should I assume we're stuck with it James?!

A councillor has done this already on our behalf and the response from Southwark was: "SSDM design standard DS.002 confirms that new vehicle crossings that are located on non-Classified Roads (roads that are not A or B roads) must have Waiting Restrictions That Are Enforceable At Any Time extending across them and for 2 metres to either side along the carriageway. For Classified Roads the distance required to either side is considerably greater. These particular requirements apply only to new vehicle crossings (not existing). In many instances (but not all) they are likely to be met by extending continuous "double yellow line" road markings through a vehicle crossing and for the specified distance to either side." This new rule is in place. We need to know how I get it changed...

The new rule applies to residential forecourts (I don't know what the rules are about the other). I can clarify it for you as I have applied and have an official letter from Southwark explaining that all new residential dropped kerbs will be double yellow lined over the dropped kerb area and to 2 metres either side as standard. We live in a house with off street parking but the previous owner didn't drop the kerb. I have also spoken to Southwark twice to have it confirmed. What we need from the Councillors is help to get a rule changed that is not practical for everyday living.

I get that the East Dulwich Forum is about, amongst other very useful things, having a good moan but you do need to get the facts straight. I was at Jags 35 yrs ago and they used the entrance by the Charter School (as was Willian Penn) then and they owned all the playing fields that they have now - they did not buy them when William Penn shut. Also, the Charter school was running a swim club at Jags after school last term as I saw them there every week and last term DVIS were using the pool for swimming lessons.

Renata if you speak to Chris Johnson or Dave Farnham you will be told that "improving safety" now applies to all dropped Kerb applications in Southwark regardless of their proximity to traffic islands....I can forward you the official Southwark letter if that helps?

We were in the process of applying for a dropped Kerb and it is very clear in the official letter from Southwark that all new dropped kerbs even if there is no safety issue, as with our house, will have a double yellow line placed along it and for 2 meters either side. I have spoken at length to Chris Johnson and the man who bought these new rules in (Dave Farnham) at Southwark and this is now their policy. I have forwarded all of this information on to James Barber as well. It is a ridiculous rule but I'm not getting anywhere with trying to get it changed...

Afraid not, we have a standard letter from Southwark that says "I would refer you to our policy regarding crossovers and the associated requirements for double yellow lines (DYL)" and then the website link I mention above. Have no idea how to fight it.

We already have a space for off street parking but the previous owner never had the kerb dropped so I have tried to start the process of doing this and have had a conversation with the man at Southwark who has proposed and had these new rules established. I think they are completely ridiculous. Not only would they be of great inconvenience to anyone else who didn't have off street parking, they cannot be of any safety benefit unless all dropped kerbs in the street are done (which would mean you could not park in some roads at all such as Ashbourne Grove). It seems like this has be changed without any thought for residents...

I have been told very clearly by Southwark that all new residential dropped curbs will have yellow lines to 2m either side of the dropped curb unless there is an exceptional reason. It is a new rule that has come into force this year to give cars on the road clearer visibility of cars coming off driveways, it does not apply to current dropped curbs. I was also told that existing dropped curbs that are being redone will most likely not be white lined again in the future.

We have just discovered that Southwark have a new rule that you have double line any new dropped curb and then to 2 meters either side of it. Do you know anything about this? It would mean that most people would be putting yellow lines outside their neighbours houses and seems totally excessive! Would like to know your views. Thanks.
