  1. Perhaps the build-out kerbs are much bigger than the "normal" kerbs in order to cause damage to any vehicle that clips them? Their design may include extra height so that it is less likely that a vehicle could mount the kerb, either by accident or design.
  2. With thanks to Jenny1, Southwark seems well aware of the traffic accidents on MG. From the report she posted: "Recorded road traffic accidents ? 2 reported collisions in last 3 years, 2 slight casualties."
  3. While we're on waste collection, does anyone else suffer from this?... Refuse collectors regularly decant waste from two or more wheelie bins into one bin, presumably to limit the number of bins that are taken to the lorry for emptying. The slapdash and irresponsible way this decanting takes place leaves the street strewn with litter. This week, I had five soiled nappies (only two in nappy sacks) left in front of my property after my neighbour's green bin was emptied into mine. Last week, another neighbour's blue bin was unaccountably decanted into my brown bin - which was then left unemptied and unusable. No attempt is made to clear up the resulting mess. Frequently, refuse collectors will only remove compostable sacks from the brown bin and will leave all other waste in there. And yes, I have reported this to Southwark as a complaint rather than just moaning on the EDF. Just wondered if this problem is more widespread.
  4. Disappointed that the Hamlet's excellent support should be used to disparage support for Jeremy Corbyn (see point 4 of this https://medium.com/@Labour_Pains/13-reasons-not-to-vote-for-jeremy-corbyn-as-leader-of-the-labour-party-11d5656cac88). Might even tip me the other way. Poor analogies can come back and bite you.
  5. Another thumbs up for Rosie's from me. Food, coffee, service all first class. Then on to Old Spike Roastery to stock up on excellent coffee.
  6. My daughter would also love to learn Japanese, driven by a fascination of all things Japanese rather than exams. Please PM me too.
  7. Dogs are allowed to roam free on that part of the Rye. Owners should be picking up solid waste but dogs will still wee in sand and not all dog owners behave responsibly. This is not the first year that this has happened, so I would have hoped these lessons had been learnt. How about putting the sand for groundsmen in the picnic area? This is contained and dog free, so would mean that kids could play in it safely. Surely a cripplingly bureaucratic "risk assessment" by Southwark should have picked this up?
  8. Endorse everything that HappyFamily says. It's all about perception; as Rowantree states in an earlier post his/her perception may have been "courteous cyclist" whereas the mother may have picked up more on the "grumpy face" element.
  9. Rather mystified by the legalistic attitude of "A contract is a contract, you know" being taken by some posters. I would imagine that everyone is aware that Dulwich Estates is acting within its legal rights. The reason I signed the petition is dismay that exercising those rights will lead to children being deprived of open space that they currently enjoy and the hope that the greater good might prevail over commercial gain.
  10. It can be the case that a manic siren blaring behind you will force you into a panic manoeuvre. Many have learnt to their cost that, although emergency vehicles are allowed in practice to break highway laws when responding to an emergency, vehicles of the general public assisting the progress of emergency vehicles are not granted such latitude. Give way if safe to do so but do not run red lights, enter blocked junction boxes or pull into bus lanes to get out of the way. Let the driver of the emergency vehicle take those options if he/she deems it safe to do so.

I would have thought that the following constitutes a very, very good reason: "The Dulwich Estate?s plan to deprive JKPS of its only playing field is contrary to government policy of safeguarding playing fields"
  12. It's Number One... http://www.buzzfeed.com/chelseypippin/london-beyond-zone-3#.gbb20jEyR
  13. Lit or unlit, the path is cut off from dwellings and there are no routes to deviate from the path should you see a suspicious person ahead. From memory, the police were previously against lighting the path on the grounds that it might give people a false sense of security and make them more likely to use it at night. Demands for lighting would inevitably be followed by demands for CCTV, police patrols and nervous pedestrian holding bays (OK, I made that last bit up). The path has been there for much longer than most of the surrounding features (including the cemetery) and it will never be a pleasant, leafy stroll that's free from stranger danger anxiety. Perhaps best to leave it as is rather than just add more light pollution?

This phrase deserves applause on its own. At once meaningless, obvious and yet conveying menace and anxiety. I am potentially at risk from developing RSI while typing this.
  15. I've met the arm-gash guy several times, around Holborn. The story was he'd been knocked off his bike (although no bike to be seen) and wanted a taxi to Homerton Hospital. The gash may have been stage make-up but he may be self-harming - on one occasion, it did appear scabbed over so did not align with his bike accident story. Once I told him: "You told me that story last week". He just said "OK" and moved on to the next punter.
  16. Well, you've got to factor in the cab fare from Chelsea...
  17. More fuel to the fire - the EDF gets a name check here: http://blog.localdemocracy.org.uk/2009/11/20/local-democracy-and-the-strange-case-of-speed-humps-and-20-mph-zones/. The article deals with 20mph zones only and seems unaware of 20mph limits. What's the difference? See here http://www.20splentyforus.org.uk/limits_or_zones.htm, which also gives a table of the advantages and disadvantages of zones and limits. Southwark has a mixture of both, with zones being the more established and in residential areas and limits being those recently introduced on more major roads. Brenchley Gardens appears to be a limit at the Forest Hill Road end and a zone at the other end. There is an urban myth that 20mph zones are legally unenforceable but I think this derives from the fact that they are supposed to be "self enforcing" via speed humps, etc. and that ACPO has stated that police will not be enforcing them.
  18. If you are a driver who nods and waves at cars who are waiting at Give Way signs on minor roads while you drive down the main road, then I can understand why you might expect pedestrians at crossings to behave in a similar manner. If not, I'd wonder why you expect gratitude for simply obeying the law.
  19. At the bottom of the drop down list of parades, there is an "Other" option. If you select this you can type the relevant P numbers into the box provided and so avoid responding on one parade only.
  20. Another shout for Kuki. My teenage daughter has been and was very happy with the result.
  21. What were you drinking grace3? Beer starts at under ?3 a pint (Trumans) in the Ivy House.
  22. It's very much down to the Head and school ethos as to whether SEND children are deterred or welcome. When attempting to place our ASD child with a statement at secondary school, we met responses ranging from "that's not appropriate here" to "we would love to accommodate them". I have to say that we experienced that full range with state schools and academies also, so this is not unique to fee paying schools. Regardless of financial setup, there are some schools that put little or no emphasis on complying with anti disability discrimination laws and the concept of "reasonable adjustment" is alien to their mentality.
