  1. There is a Private Eye journalist who is taking a keen interest; she has already dug up some interesting things. I have PM'd her details to residents who have posted on this thread. If any other resident would like to contact her (names can be kept out of any article if wished) then please PM me and I will pass on her contact details. rendelharris Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I don't know enough about the situation to do it > myself, but if someone on the inside contacts > Private Eye ([email protected]) I'm sure > the "Rotten Boroughs" column would eat this.
  2. I have sent a link to this thread to Private Eye, in the hope that they will investigate and get some exposure on a nationwide basis. Southwark has some 'form' with that magazine with regards Lakanal House, councillors' criminal records, Lend Lease sell-off and hospitality, etc. ETA: I have been contacted by a reporter from Private Eye. As I have no specialist knowledge of the situation, I suggested that she contact via PM residents who have posted on this thread. Apologies to anyone who might find this an intrusion but I think that investigative journalism could shed some much-needed light on this.
  3. The mouse poison - at least the sort available in hardware stores - is virtually useless. The mice will nibble and spit out the blue poison coating and eat the grain inside. I had a sealed box of this stuff on a high shelf (to keep away from children) in the understairs cupboard; the mice actually targeted it and knocked the box down, chewing through both cardboard and plastic pouch to get to the stuff. Then they gave us four stars on TripAdvisor.
  4. Councils can say gym = tackling obesity epidemic. They can outsource operations to Fusion / Holmes Place etc. and not employ anyone themselves. There is no "illiteracy epidemic" highlighted in the Daily Mail so libraries do not cut it. Council can cut its costs and be seen to be dealing with the crisis of the month at the same time.
  5. Most people will take a pragmatic approach if it results in resolving the situation to their satisfaction. Our neighbours are also doing a side return extension up to the party wall. They had been advised that, as they will be replacing a single course wall with a cavity wall and that is obviously thicker, the new party wall should encroach into our garden by a few inches in order to keep the centre line of the wall in its current position. Technically correct I'm sure but this would result in our York stone patio being dug up to shorten it by those inches. In the time honoured fashion, we talked about it and my neighbour agreed that this was disruption that could easily be avoided, by building the new wall to the outer line of the old wall. No solicitors, no bad feeling, no spurious objections lodged by me. Yes, we won't enjoy the noise and disruption but at least I have the comfort of knowing that talking it over avoided yet more disruption.
  6. If you have his address, you could try this: https://www.gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money It won't help you that your loan was not documented (I presume) but, if you transferred funds to his bank account, then at least you have some evidence of a transaction. Getting a CCJ won't help if he is scamming money off 'friends' as they won't check credit ratings but at least businesses will be alerted.
  7. What does this mean? There are no attachments. Promises that cover only two months don't sound ambitious.

Been meaning too but not got round to. > It's opposite John the Unicorn I went there a couple of weeks ago, for lunch. Food was really good and kebabs cooked over proper wood burning grill. It goes back a long way inside and could seat 100+ I imagine. No alcohol license but you can take your own.
  9. Quick thumbs-up for Mr Bao. Pleasant and informative staff, tasty and interesting food and you can grab a light bite from the brunch menu for under ?5.
  10. Sorry to hear about your loss. A back door being loudly kicked in does not sound like a professional burglary, so it is quite likely that your viola was not targeted by a thief with fencing contacts for quality musical instruments. They are probably hoping to offload it for a fraction of its value. You will doubtless know the fairly small list of people who trade legitimately in quality violas in S London (I won't list any here as it might help the thief) and I suggest that you contact them individually to warn them of being approached by someone with little or no knowledge of the viola they are attempting to sell. Also keep an eye on the usual suspects (Gumtree, Ebay) as fairly few violas will be listed there and yours will stick out.
  11. If you want to avoid tutting adult regulars and just focus on kids having fun, there's always https://www.wackywarehouse.co.uk/kiss-me-hardy/your-wacky
  12. Nice to see that a ?7k (circa 5%) overspend on budget is considered "slight"
  13. If the OP was a troll then bravo to them for notching up three pages on the back of one opening comment and one reply. If the OP was airing a genuine complaint, then their using the noise abatement hotline is not a bad idea from James. That team will meter the actual sound levels and be able to state objectively whether there is a case to answer. Phantom drums and whether it's a "school night" would not come into it, as James must know but is not acknowledging. Dark threats about supporters imperilling the future of the club are, I suggest, simply histrionics. 16 years ago, I chose to buy a house that is close to a pub that has been in existence for a very long time. Rarely, that pub has DJs playing and will do so this New Year's Eve. Most people's concept of "neighbourly" includes the concept of "live and let live" and, if I were to complain in those circumstances, I don't think that would be very neighbourly of me.
  14. So, in conclusion, the answer to the question in the first sentence of the OP's original comment is "No". The answer to the question in the final sentence appears to be "No" also, at least with regards to non-drumming before 23:00. Glad that's cleared up.
  15. Here's some advice I got from a policeman a few years back: Many people use deadlocks at night and often keep the keys well away from the door. This can turn a secure house into a death trap if there is a fire during the night and the door cannot be used. The addition of one or two old-fashioned bolts to the door will give security without making the door unusable in an emergency. Yes, a door secured by bolts can be kicked in but most thieves will want to avoid creating such noise in the middle of the night.
  16. Or, perhaps, they are doing their job. A pub with vacant possession may appreciate in value far more than any rental income it could generate. This would allow DE to sell off unencumbered properties to developers when their market value is highest. Not pretty, not socially-minded but welcome to free market economics.
  17. Actually featuring SE15 but if you're not too fussy about postcodes... https://londonist.com/2015/10/an-audio-visual-tapestry-about-london-s-first-co-op-pub

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Equally the 70% who live around that area might > welcome the relief from so many fewer cars. > It has been proven that 9 out of 10% of statistics are made up on the hoof to support subjective arguments. I imagine that 100% of those who live around that area might welcome the relief from traffic.
  19. I would have thought that the long term repair / frequent closure of Hammersmith flyover would have provided some real life data for this but I can't find anything from a quick search. The flyover and approach roads would have seen traffic "evaporate" but I'd like to know the impact on both the signed diversions and on the South and North Circulars.
  20. Norris and Knight on Forest Hill Road is highly recommended. The homemade carrot-and-beetroot cake with pumpkin seeds and the pork pies are worth a trip on their own. Friendly staff and happy to have dogs out the front or the back; the back yard is lovely and they keep their own chickens there for eggs.
  21. I attended a speed awareness course a year or so ago (no, not for speeding in a built up area) and it was quite enlightening. The tutor (ex-police, I believe) stated that speed restrictions painted on the road are "information only" and do not designate a restricted speed area; that can only happen if the speed limit in a red circle sign is displayed as you enter the area and there are reminder "repeater signs" at intervals throughout the area. It seems that many of Southwark's recent 20mph areas do not conform to this (and promotional banners do not count either). The older 20mph areas are more likely to comply.
  22. The discount is exactly 25% of the food not on the kids' special menu. Could be that the kids' offer is discounted already so additional discount is not permitted? This is usually a condition of such offers.
  23. 150 caddy bags for ?10.35. About 7p per bag. Yes, I use them and yes, they work fine. If 150 sounds a lot to you, split the order and cost with a neighbour or two. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HUSEQQO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
  24. I hope that you find some people with similar circumstances Alienmum. It can't be an easy situation without a support network.
  25. I went to their website to see if there were any "Our People" photos so that the OP could identify the miscreant. Is this him?
