I have no insight to the Southwark decision making process. I appreciate 2hrs is frustrating but it is better than what exists now.

I dont know specifics of why dkh zone is different. I voted all day because i was sick of what commuters were doing to my street. I cant speak for other people. Suggesting its 'i am alright jack' for voting in a ballot is actually pretty offensive.

If you are a resident, buy a permit. A visitor or tradesman can have temporary permits too. No one who has a reason to visit will be unable to park. There is nothing to be afraid of. Our parking use is down about 70% across our CPZ, and other CLZ are similar. There is no competition for spaces as you can only park in one CPZ, not the whole area. People keep saying that parking will dissapear - the exact opposite is the case, parking has massively increased due to the enormous decline in people able to park here.

To be honest there is little tangible difference from all day to 2hr. A lot of people were worried, but we have found that the big parking pressure was from commuters parking all day, not people nipping in and out. You will see a huge drop in traffic as commutters stop parking, and it will get better - you have nothing to worry about, and actually its easier if you have tradesmen or visitors as outside those 2 hours, you don't need to get a permit for them.

The big difference in parking in Southwark is the small size of the zones. Ours covers about 10 streets - no one else can park there beyond this. This is in contrast to Lewisham and other places where the zones are enormous and allow people to park widely. There really is no stress, no worry and far less hassle as a result of a CPZ - our traffic is down 70%, no extra cars have arrived and it only gets busy now on the weekends. Its a wonderful, wonderful experience - you have nothing to fear or worry about.

We've had a CPZ introduced and it has been wonderful. Simple rules (operates 0830-1830), and ridiculously easy to purchase daily visitor permits online. How anyone can find it stressful or difficult is beyond me.

Totally agree - there are a tiny minority of drivers who do seem to delight in making cyclists lives a misery and they should be prosecured to the full extent of the law. BUT, these are very much the minority. By all means ban drivers if it happens, but perhaps we could also introduce cycling licences and ban cyclists who do things like jumping red lights, riding on pavements or other dangerous behaviour that injures and kills pedestrians? -

I enjoy using them to practise structring arguments and debates and trying out views I may or may not hold. Thats the wonder of the net - its a way to test whether you agree with.the arguments you espouse.

I am happy to move on. And equally happy I do not live in Upland Road with antisocial nosey neighbours prying into strangers lives. Takes all sorts I guess.

There is an entire world of difference between observing very public (and exceptionally dangerous) behaviour visible to anyone present at the time, and asking for information on a private medical incident, inside a private residence where the person privately received treatment in the privacy of their own home. One ocurred in public, one ocurred in private. If something occurs in public view, then it isnt unreasonable to comment on, or ask about it. Such activity is the lifeblood of this forum with people wanting to know about certain activity. By contrast, asking very publically for a medical update on a private citizen, who is being treated in private in the privacy of their own home, knowing the answer would be visible to anyone in the world with internet access. Well thats a different game. How would you feel if a close relative of yours had a nasty accident necessitating ambulance intervention, and then discovered local residents who didnt know your relative, never spoken to them or seemingly? made any effort to get to know them or be neighbourly were suddenly asking for public updates on their private health condition? If it was my relative, I would be livid. If you really care, then instead of being a nosey neighbour content to speculate anonymously, go? and knock on their door, introduce yourself and say 'I hope you are okay, can I do anything to help'? Given you have seemingly never done this before, what would knowing about someones private medical situation acheive for you beyond a bit of gossip and a vague sense that you somehow care by not doing anything to actively make the situation better. Bottom line in my book is simple - if you do something in public, where others can see you or be imlpacted by your actions, then it is appropriate to pass comment. What happens indoors is private until such point as the individual chooses to share it, and should not be discussed by others. The cycling post by the way turned into a 'cyclists vs the world debate' which is slightly different to its purpose of highlighting a very specific case of very public activity that threatened child safety.

Why do you need to know? If you know people involved then they will tell you. If you dont know then frankly its none of your business, and you have no need, or reason to know beyond being nosy.

-
If I was in an incident requiring emergency services to attend, I would be furious if I found out people who knew why were blabbing to total strangers on the internet who wanted to find out details of my misfortune. I dont think its any of your business until someone involved chooses to tell you.

Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
jimlad48 replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am mildly astounded at how difficult it is to build a short flight of steps and a gate. Surely we could do what other stations have and have a gate open on windsor walk, but just have a oyster touch pad there, and accept the risk a tiny number of people may not pay? This would make an immediate difference. -

Scarily, the coffee bar entrance door used to be the sole door into the station - can you imagine that now? -

This morning at 0850 the queue to get out stretched from platform 3/4 to the exit and it was static. Utter madness. -

I have no problem if people want to keep cars outside their homes, I don't have one myself and struggle to see the need in London. I'm happy on the old moral high ground here :-)

Or they could just do what us mere mortals do and get on the bus/train or other options? I heard all these excuses on our last CPZ consultation and then some more, and absolutely nothing has changed. We live in a city optimised for public transport, so I'm afraid my sympathy is limited. Having seen one prominent local business, whose activity was a major part of the parking problem try to derail it by saying that their staff couldnt possibly commute (despite printing a map showing locations of their staff and that it was actually easily doable), this is a very, very weak argument.

mikeb Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Jimlad- so you want to be able to park your car > outside someone else?s house when you visit them. > Do you spot any inconsistency there? I have no idea what you are talking about? People are saying a CPZ makes it harder for visitors to drive to see people unless you have a paper permit. My point was that providing your host has your registration number, they can do it all online or by phone without needing a paper permit. I don't own a car, so it makes no difference to me.

Our CPZ has seen road parking drop by about 70%, so its not like we're exactly fighting for spaces here. In southwark, you just enter in online the car registration number or pay by text. You don't need paper permits anymore - if you want to drive to see someone, just let them know your registration. Its not difficult and takes maybe 10-20 seconds to do. Hard to see what the fuss is about really.

Toastrack got all day because the offer was for either 2hr parking or all day, and more people voted for all day than 2 hour parking. No conspiracy there! Generally southwark estimate a CPZ sees a 60% decrease in traffic, so you really have nothing to worry about. We were astounded at how overnight we went from a really really busy area to peace and quiet - it was astonishing how many long parked cars just vanished and haven't been seen again. People will not park somewhere if they know they have to move the car at 1100 as there is nowhere else for them to go. You really are worrying about nothing - its going to get massively quieter very quickly, please believe me on this.
