  1. I just don't get it. Why would you ever ask a guy who just knocks on the door out of the blue to do anything like this? Take their card, say thanks I'll call you, then go find out the best reputable person to do it. So many scams and cowboys out there.
  2. Real shame, though it always seemed more like a labour of love than a thriving business. I love Spanish food, their olives and ham were amazing but they never had a lot of people in there and never seemed to make the hot food business work (didn't help that they took forever to do up the kitchen/eating area). Hope the guys that ran it don't give up, lovely people and great produce.
  3. Reading all this bickering really does make me sympathize a lot more with Le C's request not to be mentioned on the forum...
  4. I like the stuff in Jade but it's small and always too crowded. Le C doesn't try and fit so many people in and has a much nicer more relaxed vibe.
  5. Sad to see it close, always found the tea and cakes delicious and the breakfasts the best around (but then where else does kedgeree?) Some people clearly have an issue with the manager, not something I ever experienced and I'd always take a place on its merits rather than getting personal. Service was a bit random as they always seemed to have a lot of turnover, I guess hiring inexperienced/temporary staff a lot. But it never caused a problem for us. Also liked the cozy upstairs room which we used for a couple of family events. Hope it's replaced with something else good...
  6. And go tomorrow unless you want a very soggy country walk. http://www.bbc.com/weather/2643743
  7. I can confirm these 3am services have not had any effect on the devil.
  8. Seems to be a feature of life in South London, the trains are rubbish and they aren't going to change... The biggest investments in infrastructure (e.g. Thameslink program and Bakerloo line extension) aren't even adding new track, so they're just running more/better trains on existing lines. So many problems caused by tangled junctions and lines crossing over each other, overcomplicated routes all converging at a crowded terminus compared to the simple tube "there and back" type routes. Not sure what it would take to build actual new track/tunnels linking new bits of South London but it would be hugely transformative...
  9. Very disappointing, as an Oyster/travelcard user it isn't a daily problem but Denmark Hill is often the best starting point for trips out of London that need a paper ticket. When there's only one ticket machine and there's a queue or a confused person having trouble with it (happens all the time) you can end up with a choice of travelling without a ticket or missing a train (that may set you back by an hour, given connections). Denmark Hill generally seems a massive cockup, all that investment on new ramps lifts and ticket office, which just serves to force large crowds getting off trains at peak times through just 2 exit gates... and now this new announcement closing the newly-built ticket office suggests nobody is really thinking properly before spending money.
  10. Another recommendation for Andy who did a great job for us painting hallway + stairs, plus some small carpentry jobs. Friendly and polite, left everything tidy and in good order, we are very happy with the result.

  12. traveler2: "On weekends in particular, we see a lot of traffic cutting from Lordship Lane to MG to access ED Grove and its plainly dangerous for residents of all ages." Not sure how you can say this. There is some traffic yes, but it isn't dangerous. I cross the road pretty much every time I leave the house and 9 times out of 10 there is no issue, it is deserted or I have to wait for a single car to pass. Note as well my previous link to a mapped record of all traffic accidents. There is literally no history of any accidents on MG for 10 years.
  13. "Melbourne Grove is meant to be just a residential road" Not sure whether there is some technical definition you are using here but your comparison with Landcroft is completely (deliberately?) misleading. Landcroft has no junction with any major road and seems an unlikely route to any neighbouring road. Melbourne Grove has three junctions with major/busy roads and is an important local connecting route (different from a rat run). The idea of funneling all local traffic down the clogged LL bus routes and GG roundabout is terrible. A run to Sainsburys from the bottom end of MG could easily end up taking 10+ minutes more at busy times, as well as contributing to more traffic jams and associated problems on LL itself. What's surprising to me is that, other than main cheerleader LalKJ, I don't see anyone at all on this thread who reports experience of traffic being a problem on MG. Nor do many of them seem to have received any notification of consultation (I didn't). n.b. also checked http://www.crashmap.co.uk/ there is basically no history of any accidents on MG going back ~10 years. This whole issue seems rather contrived, a fix for a problem that doesn't exist.
  14. rch: if I remember rightly you live at the top of Melbourne Grove, is that right? The problem with this solution is that you can't just close MG to through traffic, you will inevitably greatly disrupt many locals. And as you mention, schools are being built at either end, surely that's a reason to keep the road open to allow access from all sides, not to close it off? LalKJ: not sure if this 15,000 number is truly so high, it doesn't "feel" high living just off MG and seeing traffic along the road on a daily basis, I just don't understand this issue being brought up. Traffic calming measures exist and I would be happy with bollards/better speed humps to reduce commercial traffic and speed. Problem with this whole issue is that MG is not just a residential road, it is important for access to several other roads and there just isn't a justification to completely block off one entrance point to it.
  15. This is a dreadful idea. Melbourne Grove is not a very busy road and speeds aren't particularly high but it does provide a useful link. As a resident of the southern end of the road, having to drive all the way around via Goose Green roundabout and Lordship Lane would be awful. Are we just making traffic adjustments because of some noisy residents of the northern end of the road who bought houses on a road with some traffic and want to transform it into a quiet residential backwater? To the detriment of many others who lose convenient access to their own roads.
  16. Hi wesley, seems odd to me that every one of your 11 posts since you signed up for the EDF is to recommend your cleaner. Just saying...
  17. If it's a real problem and you don't want to change networks you can get one of their femtocells i.e. basically a mini mast just for your house. http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-accessories/sure-signal
  18. I can envision some handsome additions to this list, a long-time favourite... Cycle Facility of the Month: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.meg/wcc/facility-of-the-month/ Worth trawling the full archive if you have time.
  19. I've tried 3. - Avocado framers near ED station, pretty good, reasonable value but a bit slow. - Framers opposite the Plough, good all round - One on North Cross Road, really pricey
  20. Loz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ... except that ads on the EDF are served directly > from the site, not an generic ad company. Ok didn't realise that - assumed that since Adblock on firefox works for them they are provided by a known ad server. But still relevant question as to whether you're seeing the links on any other site or any other bit of your PC.
  21. To be honest, doesn't sound as if you have malware. If you are seeing green icons where the ads used to be, you are just getting fed survey links instead of ads. I would guess the ad distributor has now decided you are the kind of user that fills in surveys so is feeding you them instead of real ads. It may just be able to be fixed by clearing your cache and all cookies. Do you get the survey links anywhere else? on any other websites or on your PC?
  22. HOP/FH aren't really the point though - if you are close to those stations then that's fine, especially FH which has trains direct to London Bridge as well as London Overground to Canada Whater. However large numbers of people who aren't at the southern end of ED can't conveniently use those stations, and would have to pay more (Zone 3 vs Zone 2) even if they could change their route. The issue is the lack of provision to central East Dulwich, and the overcrowding on buses and the services from ED rail station. A tube extension could alleviate that, and provide coverage for the other "hole" around Camberwell/Burgess Park, and could run further out to connect up other parts of South London.
  23. edcam Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > But a tube won't make an area "nicer" will it? "nicer", more desirable, less frustrating, however you want to phrase it it would be an improvement. JamesViktor Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What about the far worse transport holes in Outer London? At least Southwark has the tube, and it is only just > over 10 square miles in area, that's tiny! Hardly comparable, and not really the point. I agree outer london needs transport links too. But, links to outer london will pass through inner london, and overcrowding/delays etc on a line will affect users equally. A new route can benefit both - by reducing congestion and potentially reaching new parts of outer london as well as fixing transport black-spots further in.
  24. Seems ridiculous that house price rises is used as an objection - basically implying you'll shoot yourself in the foot and avoid making your area nicer, more convenient etc, because of potential rises? Tackle house prices by building more, cancelling help to buy, possibly controlling rents etc, but don't use it as an objection to making the area nicer. Not sure there's much evidence the area will be busier. ED is a nice residential spot but it's hardly going to become a "destination" where people come from all over. ED is more like Balham or Putney than Clapham or Brixton. As the maps posted earlier showed very well, there is a real transport hole here in ED. The world will not end if we fix that.
  25. I really don't understand the opposition to improving transport links. Southern rail is a sad substitute for the tube, as anyone who has lived in North london will know. Trains run every 10-15 mins, worse at weekends, with frequent delays and cancellations, completely jam packed every workday at rush hour. Witness trains filling up to standing in the morning and emptying out in the evening at ED station and you'll realise how totally over-capacity this particular spot is. Buses get just as full but are a total misery as they crawl down walworth road to/from camberwell, along with the umpteen other bus routes that go to E&C. Camberwell is a particular traffic black spot and rail services from Denmark hill are not frequent into central london (the Overground is great but doesn't go into town). Then some people (presumably not the same as those of us who suffer on the trains each week) worry that the tube will "change" ED irrevocably into some kind of lesser area of London? It is incomprehensible - ED is nice but not unique, plenty of places with and without tube stations have independent shops and character etc. Please get over your stick-in-the-mud objections, the tube would be a godsend for the area and the people here.
