  1. Hi Mark_H - +1 for the Southwark Cyclists Biketrain. A really good way to get your bearings on a friendly and comfortable ride led by experts. I've been helping out with getting some of the "passengers" onwards from Blackfriars towards Westminster and Victoria. Let me know if you'd like more details. Same goes for anyone else on here too. Fed up with the railway? Join the Biketrain!
  2. Park somewhere else or walk from the station. Stop being so selfish. She doesn't need permission to photograph your car.
  3. I support the plans. The current gyratory is uncomfortable and intimidating to cycle and walk around. As with most one way systems, motor vehicle speeds are far too high. According to Southwark, the stretch that is being closed and turned into a cycle track has the highest speeds in the area, so I am glad that is being tackled. Ultimately this will only work as part of a coherent route so Southwark will also need to tackle the speed and volumes of traffic on Lyndhurst way and do something about the blockage further up Bellenden Rd outside the shops.
  4. This would stop if Southwark made any attempt to penalise illegal parking in this area but they are clearly not interested.
  5. Could it have been a bus? If so, there's a small chance if you can narrow the timeframe down a bit of there being some CCTV. Anyway, sorry to hear about this. As things stand, the penalty for stopping, owning up and repairing the damage you cause is far greater than the penalty on the vanishingly slim chance that you are caught. Hit and runs are positively incentivised.
  6. I agree old_bloke. Even trolling aint what it used to be...
  7. I'm not convinced that Vauxhall gyratory is an inevitable outcome of modern life that we have to accept. Infact, that's the whole point of the plans. It'll be a far better, more modern transport interchange. If you're still using Lambeth Bridge you might want to consider having another look at Vauxhall. They've just opened a segregated bike track over it which is a joy.
  8. TfL are consulting on changes to Vauxhall Cross including more and better public space and more segregated routes for cyclists. If the scheme goes in as currently planned it would be an enormous improvement to an extremely grim bit of town. https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/vauxhall-cross
  9. The only one of the new superhighways that is actually open is the CS5 Oval > Pimlico, and even that isn't properly finished yet and won't be until the link to Nine Elms is complete. As far as I can see, the reports of cyclists not using it come mostly from an extremely dodgy bit of journalism by LBC (quelle surprise!). I ride through there twice every day and it is already chocka with cyclists at peak times. Might be sensible to wait until the North-South and East-West schemes are complete and in use before rushing to judgement.
  10. I don't get this idea that residents weren't consulted properly. The Council held a series of forums and a massive leaflet campaign. I remember contributing to an online consultation a good 12 months before the changes went in. To say the residents are not supportive is wrong. There are plenty of residents in support. Clearly just not as many or as vocal as those in opposition. But anyway, it's done now. Like you I'll be interested to see what alternatives they come up with. Maybe they can find a way to monetise all that lovely through traffic that has returned?
  11. Agree with most of the above. How is extending Boris bikes further South the solution when the environment is so hostile to cycling? Typical of the kind of tinkering around the edges that we've been doing for decades to no avail.
  12. Is there at least some agreement on here that congestion, air pollution and a pretty grim public realm are all problems in that area? Does anyone have any other creative solutions to those problems rather than just moaning about things the council are trying?
  13. http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/housing/regeneration/loughborough-junction-what-you-need-to-know Looks like the experimental closure has been largely defeated. Back to the drawing board for Lambeth. Shame.
  14. nunhead_man - Just boring in the way that 2 hour meetings about traffic planning tend to be... And not being entirely serious. They are a lovely bunch and we even got free beer and pizza! Lilaclou - Thank for the info, that tallies with what we talked about on Wednesday. I'll try to keep an eye on it through Southwark Cyclists and report back here. Once it gets to consultation stage it's important that we throw as much weight behind it as possible. Segregated tracks down Peckham Rye East would be transformational but will be fiercely resisted.
  15. Not sure wulfhound. It was pitched as "Peckham Rye East". But there aren't any more details at this point. It would make sense that it would include some kind of route connection to Rye Lane and Burgess Park. Plans for unpicking the Bellenden Rd gyratory are pretty advanced so that could all link up quite nicely. Doesn't change the fact that the Quietways are bollocks and SE Londoners have been shafted over CS5 but that's for another thread :D
  16. It was intensely boring.... but one snippet of info that might be of interest to the OP. The Council is soon to start consulting on plans for Peckham Rye East. Which I took to mean basically the route that we've talked about, from Nunhead, down the Rye and on into Burgess Park. I'm told it's currently a blank piece of paper so plenty of scope to get cycling and walking considerations up the agenda. Watch this space.

The LJ changes are about making that area more pleasant in general (which I think is being achieved). My main interest is the positive effect this will have on the cycling environment which has always been a bit grim but will inevitably improve with careful road closures.
  18. Not my photo - But I believe they were still in place yesterday.
  19. The bother at the Oval and Elephant is because they are still building something. The bits they have opened at Oval > Vauxhall > Pimlico is great and traffic is now flowing smoothly. Let's at least let them finish the construction before we start slagging it off?
  20. Oh God lilaclou I hope not. That roundabout is a mess. A bit more like the CS5 that has just opened from Oval to Pimlico would be ideal. I'll be at the AGM so I'll add my voice to the concerns about that route!
  21. The Southwark branch of the LCC has been campaigning for segregated tracks down that side of the Rye and on into Rye Lane to hook with Burgess Park and the various quiet routes down there. That would solve your problem but it has met predictably stiff opposition. I'm sure your support would be appreciated: http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/
  22. Agreed scootingover. And at the moment we only have usable roads for motor vehicles. So what's to be done?
  23. "Non-stop chaos" https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CTdE8lwWEAAtJ8V.jpg:medium Taken at 12.40 today
  24. They are not explicitly encouraged to speed. But the only incentives that drivers have is punctuality of service and they are put under great pressure to hit those targets. There are no incentives regarding safety. The safety record of London buses is shocking.
