  1. You might find more takers in the business section.
  2. Opinion pieces are always going to enrage some people because they're driven by the newspaper's political agenda (and journos building their own profile), when in reality most of us hold more conflicting opinions than that allows for. The culture section's great, though, and the Saturday edition is still enough to see you through a weekend.
  3. Surely Boris is going to step in and push Dave out of the way.
  4. Workmen not showing up (again). They can bring their own tea and biscuits next time.
  5. kdsd77, I'm so sorry for how the DM portrayed you and I'm sure it will have made the experience more painful. I think a lot of people reading that article will have assumed that it wasn't a fair representation. I hope that the relevant authorities are now all doing their stuff to support you and also anyone like your neighbour who may be living alone with health problems.
  6. I think the Crown & Greyhound is being revamped and the boutique hotel is an addition rather than a replacement.
  7. Saw Ballyturk at the NT last night. Blistering performances from all concerned; no wonder it's only on for a month.
  8. I agree, ZT, though I wonder if she may feel she has been presented unsympathetically as the DM has made it look as if she's more concerned about her rights than what happened to her poor neighbour, which is probably not the case.
  9. You can get a couple of free one-to-one training sessions from Southwark and the instructors will be able to answer lots of questions for you. Details on Southwark website. One of mine included a run up to the South Bank to show me some quieter routes and build my confidence.
  10. Is that a comment on another thread or on this one?
  11. It's idiotic. I assumed the writer must be very young, but having looked at the photo perhaps he's just lazy.
  12. Strangely compelling.
  13. I dropped in today and basically got the same answer as Bellenden Belle, so I don't feel much better informed yet, but apparently they're going to put a notice in the window to explain so hopefully all will become clear soon.
  14. Looks like no trains this weekend. Network Rail is a good source of information, particularly the live departure boards, or try the Southern website or tfl.gov.uk.
  15. I agree with edcam. Best not to speculate on identity. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that. You could share it with the OP via a PM instead perhaps?
  16. It says police are making enquiries to establish if the child is at risk. If? Good grief.
  17. Meanwhile closer to home, here are some more Christians having fun (I know it's the DM, but what the hell): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2770907/Police-investigating-child-exorcisms-carried-dawn-group-adults-chanting-demon-toddler.html
  18. Now at 978. With everything else that's in the news it would be easy for this to get buried. I hope not.

  20. Banks do huge amounts of community investment and other charitable stuff but (whatever you may think of banking) they don't confuse it with a mission statement. Looking forward to getting a better understanding of what they're trying to do.
  21. It sounds as though they intend to do something charitable if they have surplus profit at the end of the year, which, however honourable their intentions, presumably would also reduce their tax burden. If so I don't think that makes them a charity themselves. It takes most businesses a couple of years anyway to become profitable - are people supposed to donate in good faith while that happens, I wonder? Perhaps the volunteer BB spoke to was confused. I'm thinking of taking a trip down there tomorrow now to understand what its all about - very curious.
  22. I don't really associate the things you've listed with a village, Foxy, but no argument with them if that's what it means to you. The lack of pubs does seem odd given the importance the Estate and the Dulwich Society attach to the idea of it being a real village. My elderly neighbours say that in the past it had proper village shops, like a butcher and a greengrocer. Expect it had a local bobby, too. I wonder if there are any local 'resting' actors who would like to wander up and down in the village at weekends dressed as a policeman? Probably cheaper than the real thing.
  23. What's a village without a village pub?
  24. I wonder if it would be possible to start a community pub to see the village through?
