I love living in the village (I rent). If I'm honest it's because I can't handle anything more urban these days. Age thing. Don't know what Hammerman means as you could definitely buy bread, milk and other groceries at Shepherds until very recently and you can still pick them up at the two delis, and of course there's Gail's for nice bread; not sure if Au Ciel still sells some as well. The point is that it would be good to be able to buy essentials there. No doubt even the staff of the Dulwich Estate would like somewhere to buy lunch more cheaply. What happened about the Sainsbury's local that was supposed to be moving in at the start of the year?
  2. It's odd, isn't it, that the restaurants in DV are so mainstream and banal and yet there's no corner shop where you can buy normal groceries. I didn't use Shepherds as it was so expensive and I rarely use either of the delis. A small Waitrose would be the perfect solution. (Don't start, we're talking about the village, not ED.)
  3. I still think it sounds like something from Inbetweeners.
  4. Am I the only person who doesn't have a wok, then? I've always found stir-fries fail to live up to expectations - probably the fault of my poor cooking skills - so a frying pan has always seemed good enough. Kettle and toaster aside, what other piece of kitchen equipment could you not do without?
  5. I just googled it as someone mentioned it a few posts back. Not a social media fan myself but I assume you need to join it to post (same as here).
  6. Aren't those general instructions for saucepans? Not wok-specific. Don't you have to wipe your wok with paper after use (matron)?

Sue, in memory of Otta: let me google that for you. https://m.facebook.com/E.Dulwich/?locale2=en_GB
  8. Try opening a bank account with Santander or Ulster Bank. It won't solve your problem but it'll put it into perspective.
  9. I dunno. I always felt that sense of an inner circle left a lot of people feeling like outsiders and as though they had less right to speak. Perhaps it will become more welcoming. Could also be that forums have had their day. Most people have moved on to social media.
  10. Twenty years ago the value of shops like Londis and Shepherds in DV was that they were open for post-drinking snacking and hangover food on a Sunday, but now that everywhere's open late, you can see why people don't want to pay those prices. They need new reasons for people to go through the door. The Costcutter opposite the library tried hosting the Post Office for a while but looks that that didn't work out.
  11. What does Londis stock that no one else does? Intrigued.
  12. I used to buy organic about 15-20 years ago but to be honest I'm not sure it does always taste better (that and I no longer have the microbiologist partner who couldn't stop himself from saying witheringly, 'It's not INorganic, is it' whenever I asked about the upbringing of a lettuce, which made it more amusing). Prefer local over organic generally.
  13. Amused by your nose for a bargain, ianr.
  14. You should be able to get the answers here: http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1781.aspx?CategoryID=74 So far I've only paid extra when I wanted a white filling that's not visible from the front (those are included in the price bands).
  15. The argument about chains has come up a lot on the EDF over the years and, despite everyone's fears, although a few have come in it's still a good mix of those and independents and small chains. Sometimes it sounds like people feel helpless victims of these businesses and landlords, but we live in a capitalist society and the your most powerful vote is where you choose to spend your money. If we don't want chains in this area we can choose not to use Caffe Nero, M&S, Pizza Express, Sainsbury's et al. They're highly commercial and if they don't get the footfall they'll quickly go away or risk failing. What surprised me most about Cafe Rouge is that they didn't pull out of DV five or six years earlier.
  16. Halal apart, apparently these days most chickens killed for meat are gassed. Not sure if this is more humane or just grotesque.
  17. Apparently most halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter, as required by UK law, but this is considered acceptable because they're stunned to render them unconscious rather than kill them. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/may/08/what-does-halal-method-animal-slaughter-involve
  18. Doubt it. I don't think it's possible to ritually slaughter animals in an organic or free-range way - though the Countryside Alliance might disagree.
  19. Apparently it's all halal and kosher too, so a good choice for a diverse and multicultural place.
  20. I'm passing the time travelling back from a few days in Lille and found this class in Clapham. Maybe you could do a class then start your own group. https://sewoverit.co.uk/quilting-classes-london/
  21. There's a craft club that meets at the library. Don't know if they quilt though.
  22. Definitely Poundland, much as I like the Lidl ones, which are better quality than the ones Southwark provided.
