  1. hi everyone i'm really intrigued by the fact there are hardly any - actually no - threads about midwives on this forum. I'm a midwife and I find this really curious. i thought women would be asking loads of questions about the best place to birth, different options in pregnancy, can anyone recommend a private midwife, etc? any ideas why?!
  2. hiya i went to an amazing conference about babies last week where we were told that research has shown that sleep training approaches don't actually make a difference in the long term - they often help for a week or four, but over longer periods babies revert to old - or form new - patterns i thought that was interesting they were also saying how very different babies' sleep patterns are from adults (like we don't know that) but that it is during sleep that baby's brains 'wire and fire' - ie process and lay down neural networks which become life long learning. thus it is advised not to interrupt a baby's natural sleep pattern - they sleep the way their physiological needs demand. also some really interesting new stuff coming out about problems associated with the fact that everyone now puts babies on their back to sleep, because of the reducation in cot death. apparently the reaons the babies don't experience cot death on their backs is cos sleeping on their backs is inherently stressful for babies and they never fall into as deep a sleep as they do in other positions, which means their brains don't form as they would otherwise.... golly, what is a mother to do?! the guy speaking was called Nils Bergman, he's a South African Dr and world -renowned neonatal 'expert; please google him if you want more info on that
  3. hmmmmmmmmmm, gosh i'm looking forward to the meeting - it'll be a juicy and enlightening one i'm sure :)
  4. Hi In response to your post about private lactation consultants.... Neighbourhood Midwives offer private home visits, and we can assess for tongue tie and do that procedure too. You can find more info at www.neighbourhoodmidwives.org.uk feel free to PM me about it though - I'm the local Neighbourhood Midwife for East Dulwich We're also in the process of starting a drop in clinic at the Vale near the station every other Tueday really hope you don't have problems this time... best wishes Julie
  5. It's such an interesting issue, isn't it? Especially with that fact that many babies with tongue ties don't seem negatively affected at all... Do you know that Neighbourhood Midwives (who I work for) have just started a new Tongue Tie and Midwifery Chat clinic at the Vale therapy centre in East Dulwich every other Tuesday morning? A specialist midwife will properly assess your baby to see if they have an anterior or posterior tongue tie and will listen to you about exactly what breastfeeding issues there are... It costs ?15 to have the assessment and ?120 for the procedure should you need/want it, which can be done in your home if you'd rather We're also there to chat about any pregnancy/birth/postnatal questions. Good to have in the area...
  6. Hi Alison really sorry to hear you had a negative experience. Have you come across Neighbourhood Midwives? I'm a midwife and I work for them in the Peckham area- basically because I had enough of women like yourself having negative experiences and was convinced there was a way that women could be offered truly great care so they can birth positively I haven't heard of the Aylesham midwives. But if you want to look into what we offer, please check out our website. www.neighbourhoodmidwives.org.uk You can call us for a free consultation anytime on 0208 874 6624 Alternatively we're doing a free drop-in clinic tomorrow morning at 9.30 at the Vale in Dulwich, so you might want to come along then and meet some of us and ask us questions. directions are here: http://www.thevalepractice.co.uk/find_us.php all the very best with it and I hope you find the care you and your baby deserve Julie
