  1. I guess if you have to ask the EDF for guidance, rather than your friends....that probably gives you a hint....

Posts like your post are why. Strange how those who purport to be so caring and tolerant are often the exact opposite.
  4. old news....I've been talking for years....

Im sure that everyone waking up is shocked and saddened by the news from Manchester. Lets not be so quick to brand anyone as lacking in compassion. Some people may not have seen the news, some people may react by 'getting on with things', and not being 'intimidated'..... in anycase, perhaps lets just keep this thread to news about the pub I think.....I for one, am cautiously optimistic about it being open again in a month...

I think you'd probably get an equal amount from poor backgrounds who would say..."well i managed to drag myself up, through hard work and dedication, so there's nothing stopping them except themselves. I didnt get any helping hands, so f#ck them" I'm not saying thats the right way to think or not, just saying that im sure there would be all types, and its hard to speculate on what certain people might think based on their income....

I disagree. I've had two knee reconstructions and a back operation, covered with private cover (to allow me to walk inside of a few weeks rather than a few months, or nearly a year in the last case). But I still see my NHS GP, both my kids were born in NHS hospitals. My son sees an NHS physio. I personally, would support improvement in NHS services, despite also wanting to continue my Pvt insurance (perhaps Im not 'everyone', but its my view), and I don't think its uncommon that people with pvt care end up utilizing a mix of pvt and NHS services. > > As for private schools having to pay VAT, why > shouldn't they? By hiring the builder, rather than waiting for the council, one would expect the service to be faster and better, otherwise why would you pay for it? By hiring the personal security guard, you get a personalised security service, therefore it is 'value added'. So ideologically, if you charge VAT on private education, then labour would also have to conceded that pvt education is faster/better than the public system, and the 'value added' tax should mean that it is a value added service; therefore should have no problem with pvt educated kids having a 'leg up' on public school kids. Somehow i doubt they'd accept that! > "Politics of envy" is a tired old phrase which > really means "I've got lots and I'm buggered if I > see why I should share, and if anyone objects it's > not because they want to improve things for others > it's because I'm so great they're jealous." Just because its tired and old, doesn't make it untrue (David Attenbourgh still draws a crowd:)). I could also flip your description to "You've got lots and I'm buggered if I see why you shouldn't share"

To be fair, labour wont take us back to the 70's...maybe just the 1980's....1980's USSR...

Its two smaller tax grabs that have caught my eye in the labour manifesto, over and above the big headline income and corp tax increases. Firstly they want to increase the insurance tax on private medical insurance premiums; secondly they want to add VAT to private school fees.... Both of these smack of ideological vindictiveness, rather than economic sense... At a time when Labour claims that both our healthcare and education system are 'broken'; why would they want to add barriers to those who can afford to alleviate pressure on the public systems? Even if you're ideologically opposed to the privatisation of the NHS, why would you begrudge someone who can afford to go elsewhere, doing just that and freeing up pressure on the public system? Envy politics and anti-aspirational in my view.

The 'multiplier effect' of some public spending, I understand. But extrapolating this to effectively say by spending ?90bn we will actually make a net gain???....ummmmmm...I'd like to see both your hands above the table please....

  16. For the most part, we all know that foxtons are typically unpleasant to deal with and pricey to do any business with; I dont think anyone I know thinks well of them as an organisation. But I do have to ask, practically, how do they continue to be so brazen? In my street all the houses are much of a muchness, and recent sales are all within +/-10% of a central point (depending on loft conversion, side returns, garden size, bathrooms, finishing etc). But foxtons have recently put on a house in our street (seemingly not materially different from any others) at a price around 40% above the 'going rate'. Now unless there's gold under the floorboards, why do this? Especially when there is another 2 houses for sale in the street already (at levels around the 'going rate'). Surely anyone spending hard earned cash on a home would do the most basic comparison research and baulk at the foxtons listing?
  17. As someone who worked for Macquarie for 7 years both in Sydney and London. As well as being married to Mrs Cat, who continues to work at Macq-Daddies, I feel I can say with some authority, that their reputation for ruthlessness is well earned That being said, they exist to make a profit for their shareholders, so if they are operating within the law then the blame is not with them, whether they are 'foreign' or otherwise....

    Rugby matters

The thing is that 2 years is a long time in international rugby. So its pretty hard to know what the teams will be like (with the exception of the All Blacks, who will no doubt have at least 3 new 'wunderkids' who we havent even heard of today yet). Just imagine if these were the pools based on 2015 RWC form (i.e. only 2 years ago)....

I'll concede that sometimes people can mix numbers up or mis-speak. But she was hardly pushed into a difficult situation in that interview, she just f'#ked up, plain and simple. Also...today's labour party interviews/messages are all about this specific issue of them adding 10,000 more police....that's the issue she was there to discuss, so not being over the figures for the very thing you are there to talk about doesn't inspire a huge amount of confidence...
