Having grown in brisbane in Australia, before air conditioning was anything normal people had in their homes...my tips... Keep the curtains closed during the day, you may want to let the light in, but you'll be glad of it come the afternoon. Only open the windows on the side of the house not facing the sun, and maybe just one of the other side to try and catch any 'cross breeze'. When not in the room, place the fan so it blows air OUT of the room where you spend most time. Place a bowl of ice and water infront of your fan for a poor-mans air conditioner Dab a bit of water on exposed skin when in front of the fan, for more poor man's air conditioning (this is how evaporative ac actually works).

Genuine question.... I've seen plenty in the papers, on the Web and on the news about how they were going to get the boys and their coach out. And naturally im genuinely thrilled that they all out safe. But, i've not read anything explains how they ended up over 3km from the cave entrance with no guide, no gear and no idea?

This may be a really stupid question....but how do I confirm whether or not my house is on the Dulwich Estate? We're thinking of getting an extension done, and properties on the Dulwich Estate also need approval from the Estate as well as Southwark Council. I've combed the Dulwich estate website, which has extensive details on what you need to do it you want to make changes to your freehold property located on the estate. But I cant seem to find details of the boundaries of the estate. We've lived in the house for for 7 years, and I cant recall ever getting a letter from the Dulwich Estate, which suggests we don't fall within. But, we're on the borders of Dulwich village/East Dulwich, so just want to make sure. can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a Samsung curved monitor for my Laptop, which is about 24inch.....personally, i dont think it makes a difference at all. But might be different when watching a film rather than playing with spreadhseets...

Well...I stand corrected. My apologies to Alleyns, and to Worldwiser above. I don't think it was 100% clear the spaces were being replaced, and the cycnic in me (most of me) went straight to the negative. Carry on people...nothing to see here......

Thanks James, appreciate the post. If they return to their previous position with parking off Hillsboro road, then fine. But, my read of the letter doesn't suggest this is the case....I hope Im wrong.

The rest of the long letter is just 'patter' to attempt to impress you with all the 'traffic management' initiatives they support, and to the convince you of their commitment to reducing congestion. The purpose being to distract you from the actual reason for the letter, which is to inform local residents that they will be forcing their staff to park in local streets. Exactly how removing staff parking will incentivise staff not to drive when there is free parking in neighbouring streets, I don't know.

As a neighbour of Alleyns School, I received the attached letter in the post today. It is a long letter, which in a nutshell says that the school is no longer going to allow their staff to park on the school grounds, meaning they will be parking on local streets. The letter states that Alleyns is closing its 'Interim' carpark, which it used after the loss of the old carpark due to building works. But using the term 'interim' would normally suggest that it is a temporary measure before a suitable replacement is found. In this case it appears the 'replacement' is to not set aside a small section of their sprawling grounds for staff parking, but to further congest local streets.... Cant say this letter fills me with community goodwill. There's a contact email of [email protected] for anyone who wishes to follow-up with the school.

I know right. I went to Dulwich park this weekend, and did you know, there's a caf?!!!???, right in the middle of the park!!!??? in the exact spot I wanted to sit and listen to my wireless. And all these people(probably out of towners) were in there eating, drinking and enjoying themselves. I don't know why the council didn't think of the local residents who can only use that 100sqm of park space, and couldn't possibly just sit somewhere else.

While this is a fascinating debate on the psychology of animals....wasn't Keano77's original point not about the concept of whether animals can be traumatised or not, but simply that it's highly unlikely that these dogs were 'traumatised' just by being shouted at by two blokes in the park for a few minutes....

it all sounds very unpleasant, and no doubt the OP was furious when his wife got home and told him. But as others here have said...'attack', 'assualt', 'shrieking to the point of animal cruelty'????.....lets get some perspective....and just agree that some people can be arseholes....

In a wryly amusing follow up to this thread. This afternoon I got a call from a chap at Sydenham audi, who said my car was due a service, then proceeded to rattle of a long list of things which were 'due' to be replaced....so when would I like to book it in? I calmly replied that I wouldn't, as I felt that the last few times I have brought my car in I have been overcharged and the car's unnecessarily serviced. He chose not to suggest a remedy, or attempt to entice me to go back with some assurances. He simply said 'ah well, hopefully we get you back one day, goodbye sir'.......my guess is that perhaps it wasn't the first time he'd heard that complaint...

Fatcats....it's nice that you've responded....and since you asked the question, I suppose you should response to those responses. But don't get caught up arguing with the Internet, or justifying yourself to bloggers....we are idiots....

I think most things you've said would resonate with many people, when considering whether to move or not. To my mind, the thing that keeps most people here is the need to work in London. I work in Finance, so if I move, then I either cut down my employment options SIGNIFICANTLY, or I resign myself to the big commute. The shows, restaurants,culture and 'buzz' etc are all nice draws, but as was mentioned above, you can enjoy all of those things as an occasional visitor, so I would think its work (more specifically, a reticence to do a long commute to work) that keeps most people here ('most', not 'all' before someone jumps down my throat!). If you believe you can easily find work in your field elsewhere, then I would say go. That being said, if you're able to freelance quite easily, surely you can find freelance work in London that doesn't involve 2+ hours commuting?
