Interesting. I have heard Shingles is very painful. So if you get Chicken Pox more than once I take it the 2nd and subsequent times it is very mild, not a 'full on' attack like first time around? You learn something new every day!

Arrrghh my washing machine has died....sob....
The Nappy Lady replied to The Nappy Lady's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks Trinity, Not such an issue if I continue with the British Gas cover as it includes parts and servicing. Still can't decide which to go for, wish that Miele did a machine that offered a steam cycle, actually maybe they do and it is just outside my price bracket. Decisions, decisions, I am so rubbish at this! Part of me is hoping a 2nd hand one will come up cheap on the forum, then I can buy it as a stop gap and take another few months (years) to make up my mind! -
Isn't it classed as shingles when that happens Cate? I think it is quite rare, but possible...could be wrong though. Molly

Flying long-haul with newborn
The Nappy Lady replied to newcomer's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi newcomer, I'd recommend you phone BA and speak to them directly about this as I'm sure they would be very helpful and will be able to advise on some of it. Can you get tickets that would be easy to change (travel date) if baby arrives late / passport takes longer to get than expected? Really hope it all works out well for you. Molly -
I find the younger they are the less poorly they are with it....can't always rely on it, but my daugther at 2 wasn't actually 'ill' at all, just very spotty. She still went to the Childminder (as the other children there had given it to her), which was a big help, and really didn't seem off colour at all. Guess we were v. lucky going by other posts on here. Molly

Clux, So glad you will be able to pop out for a while. The c-beebies website has some fab stuff on it that may keep your 4 year old going for a while - they have pictures you can print off and colour in which my daughter loves doing. sillywoman - it was the doctor who told me not to bother with the Calamine, and I took him at his word, but I can imagine it would feel cooling and soothing if they are feeling really itchy with it. I remember Mum putting it on me when I had it (and measels) long ago.... Ryedalema, that is such a good idea about recording it in their red book, thanks for that tip. Molly

Hi Clux, Good to get it out of the way though - our eldest got it 4 days before our first ever holiday abroad and so we couldn't fly! Itching these days is usually OK - you can give them liquid Piriton - just buy it over the counter at any chemist. Don't bother with the other stuff that they used to put on us with cotton wool when we were kids and had it (can't remember what it is called, but the chalky stuff)...it doesn't really help, but the Piriton does. The worst thing is being cooped up - they are said to be most infectious before the spots occur of course, but officially contagious until the last spot has scabbed over. If you know any children who have already had it they can of course come to play, which can help. There was a thread on here ages ago, not sure if it would come up if you search as I think there has been a clear out of old messages. I think baths with rolled oats tied up in a muslin can help too if I recall rightly. I'm sure someone else on here will know for sure. For the 2 year old, if still in nappies that is going to be the area that will get the spots the worst. If you can dare give her nappy off time so the spots can dry out and scab over that will help too. Hang in there....Molly

The Nappy Lady replied to The Nappy Lady's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Vickster, Thank you - I've been looking at an LG too - the LG F1406TDSP6 which is very similar to the one you have got. A friend has one - she has 4 children, the youngest in cloth nappies - and it has been doing 2 washes a day for 4 years so far without any problems - she swears by it! The steam function sounds very good. So, I am debating between the LG and the Miele now....do you have any problems with the cotton rinse cycle not being very good, or the volume of the spin? These are the two issues Which seemed to pick up on with the LG's, but my friend hasn't found either a problem. Need to try to find someone who does interest free credit (ha!) next. Molly -
Thanks Budur, It is interesting. So it is working in general, which is brilliant, and the constraints are really just around childcare and lifestyle which is pretty much what was suspected. Really good to hear more about this. Was she good about using the potty even through the 'escapee' bit when first mobile? Molly

Ah Crokes thank you for that link - sounds like the washing machine equivalent to The Nappy Lady - just what I was after! Bawdy-nan, so sorry to hear that. So far they have been OK for me, though I no longer have the boiler cover, I just have cover for my dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer. They have done a few repairs along the way without any problems. I gather the boiler cover isn't really worth it, and that the annual service they do is a waste of time (told this by a plumber I know). He put me in touch with someone who does a 'proper' annual service on my boiler now, and it is cheaper and much better in my opinion. If I knew someone who could repair my kitchen applicances reliably and without ripping me off I'd drop the BG cover on those too, but have never yet found such a person. Molly -
Advice please - buying a buggy on ebay...
The Nappy Lady replied to snowboarder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Agree, was going to say; Check feedback on the seller. Should be 100% positive, or if any negative go and read it to see the nature of it, if only one or two negative it is usually nothing to worry about. Look for photos that either look like you or I would take (if private seller), or professional type ones if an ebay 'shop' many of the dodgy sellers use images which you can sort of tell they have copied and pasted off another website if that makes sense?? Pay using Paypal as this gives you protection if it is dodgy - money back etc. Maybe look at the sellers other listings, this can be reassuring if you can see they are selling a lot of other similar sort of stuff. Hope this helps, I've bought quite a lot of stuff on Ebay over the years without any problems (touch wood). So...a new buggy eh? Just as well you've had a bit of a clear out??!!!!!! Will this one fit in the boot? Tee Hee!!! -

Thanks all. Will keep you posted on how the whole British Gas thing goes. Pickle - have PM'd you. Molly x -
I agree buggy. I think it is fair enough to book a home birth while you are considering the options and are maybe undecided, but not to do so with the express purpose of changing your mind at the last minute. Molly

Thanks Cate, You can get kitchen appliance cover with BG, and drains cover and stuff. Never sure whether it is really worth it, but it does make life easy when things go wrong as no repair bills. My friend has a Meile and says it came with a ten year parts and labour cover, so maybe the extra cost is worth it. Molly -
Whoo hoo....go for it!!!! Look forward to bumping (not literally) into you in the park soon! Molly xx

Family History in E.D. - looking for memories
The Nappy Lady replied to The Nappy Lady's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Wow, thanks to amazing, generous help from others I have now traced back 7 generations to 1740! Anyway, reason for the update is ED specific - to say that my Great Grandfather Oscar Ince Neighbour Edwards (postman and Violin Teacher) lived at 1 Archdale Road, and married Alice Grace, from 100 Landells Road on 14th April 1900. She was 30 and he was 33 when they got married. So, if you live in either of those houses you are walking in my families foot steps! Molly -

Thanks Helena, Am amazed that 70 people have read this and so far no one appears to have gone through this with British Gas....or if they have they aren't saying anything (oh dear, maybe that's a bad sign). Hey ho. Molly -
I think it is just that this is about the 4th or 5th post in 2 days from Yun on the topic (in various guises) Linz, so it feels like they are maybe a bit too keen to raise their profile if you know what I mean....no issue with the topic :))

Hello BTE, Congratulations on your pregnancy and impending move to lovely Dulwich! Here is a long thread on Kings vs St Thomas' if you haven't found it yet; http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,377569,page=1 I had home births both times, once through the community midwives out of Kings, the other time with The Brierley and it is well worth considering...if any problems they go into hospital with you, so you still get good continuity of care, and otherwise you get to stay at home which is really wonderful. You can always change you mind, even at the last minute and have a hospital birth instead, but it is much harder to book hospital and change to home birth later (unless it just happens like that on the day)....eek! Not really a Family Room topic officially I know, but only other parents will understand just how bad this is..... My trusty 11 year old Whirlpool is finally beyond repair. I have a British Gas service contract on it, so the repair man has declared it officially 'dead'.....next step Whirlpool will call me on Monday to arrange to see it to ensure they agree, then British Gas will give me some money towards a new machine....my question is has anyone else gone through this rigmarole? I'm not convinced it is worth the wait for them to sort all this out, especially if they only end up offering me a tenner towards the cost of a new one! I am lucky to have neighbours who are letting me do my washing in their machine (yes even the nappies bless them)!!! But, any experience of the British Gas replacement scheme guys? Oh, and any recommendations for very good (and of course AAA rated machines for when I go shopping?). Molly

Hmmm, not sure every cat will be a mouser though? Not an option for us anyway due to me being mega allergic, and having a dog (who is def. not a mouser!!). Molly

disposable vs reusable nappies
The Nappy Lady replied to curly amy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Amy, I would be delighted to help you with this dilemma! The Nappy Lady is a free advice service which is designed to help those who want to use cloth nappies to do so successfully. A good place to start is our website www.thenappylady.co.uk which has tonnes of useful info on it (including this list of pros and cons to nappy laundry services): http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=53 You can also complete a Tailored Advice Questionnaire on our website, from this I will prepare a detailed advice letter for you, with loads of info and details of the system I feel will best meet your personal priorities. You can then come along to one of my demos in Nunhead if you want, but we also have demo videos on You Tube now, broken down into various sections, so it makes it very easy to find out all you need to know by watching these in your own time at home. The various sections are listed on this page of the website; http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=281 I hope this helps, and look forward to maybe speaking to you soon. If you call and don't get me just leave a message - I fit this in around another part time job, 2 kids and a demanding hubby, so can't always get to the 'phone right away!
