  1. Maybe some of you could take your pathetic posturing off to the Lounge and respect the fact that someone has lost a pet to awful circumstances. Steph you really do have my deepest sympathy. Try to focus on the lovely times you had with Gatwick
  2. The landlord (about two years ago - dont know if he is still there) is a massive Celtic fan. When the Old Firm match is on there is usually a decent turn out, with the vast majority being Celtic fans. On a positive note, I have never seen any trouble when I have been there to watch the mighty 'tic. The toilets do leave a lot to be desired and there are cracks on the wall which really do suggest the Castle has some sort of gravity defying mystical power but it is inside exactly what it looks like from outside - it doesnt pretend to be anythin other than what it is.
  3. Somebody put this Table in touch with Jeffrey.....seems to need direction OFFERED: LeapFrog Learn and Groove Bilingual Learning Table new
  4. Thanks Keef for the moral support. Also wont have him because of all that sh!t in his hair. Similarly I wont have Drogba, Berbatov or Torres because of the girly hair grip they wear. The way things are going I am only going to be able to pick Andy Johnson!
  5. Hotel Langlois - look it up in Trip advisor for comments. Really well located- 5 minutes in a cab from Gare Du Nord. Clean and very Parisian - not some big corporate sterile hotel which could be anywhere in the world
  6. Candj very tough but I felt it was incredibly humbling, as he wrote with such compassion. Its the single book that most affected me and how I look at life. Dont mean to sound all heavy but having read it, you will hopefully understand what I mean.
  7. If Not Now, When - Primo Levi If This Is A Man - Primo Levi Sabriel - Garth Nix Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer Paris Trance - Geoff Dyer Hard Times - Charles Dickens The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks There are other books I have read and really enjoyed but these 7 are the only ones that really stick.
  8. Whats the verdict? Do you have to have Ronaldo to stand any chance of winning this season? I know he is injured but last year if you had him as Captain, he was a points machine. I personally cant stand him and therefore very rationally and logically wont have him in my team but what do the rest of you think?
  9. Pierre thats a bit harsh I dont think the Duke describes its food as "exceptional" anywhere on their website - "homecooked" and "seasonal" yes. They dont pretend to be a Michelin star restaurant. Its a pub with good honest food at decent prices and nice service.
  10. Anyone have an update as to when the Mag (or whetever it will be called) is due to reopen?
  11. Yes this is my maiden post but no I dont work for or have any interest in the Duke. Lets get that out of the way before anyone reads my very very enthusiastic review of this pub and gets all accusatory. To the pub..... The missus and I took a look at the weather yesterday and decided to go out for lunch to somewhere we hadnt tried before or hadnt been to for a while. This didnt leave a lot of choice given that we like to eat out a fair bit but it came down to the Montpelier, the Duke or the Nun's Head. Given that we hadnt been to the Duke, that was my favourite and so we headed in that direction. Should also mention the missus has a big problem with the Montpelier as it doesnt have seats outside even though it has the space - really rankles her as she smokes and hates what she sees as a wasted opportunity for the pub. The Duke - great menu (pretty much something for everyone) from salads, sandwiches to steaks. I had the burger and chips. Really really top notch. Nice home made chips, fresh lettuce and tomato, nice grilled bun and a fresh homemade burger. The Rye does a great burger but the one thing it isnt, is homemade - its more burger van than William Rose if you know what I mean. The missus had the Sausage and mash. Three sausages and a good splurge of mash - a very decent portion - and judging by the lack of talking, it went down very well! We had a nice bottle of Chilean red for ?14. Not a bad price for a pub. There is a decent wine list which starts at ?12.50. The pub itself has beautiful original features from the twenties (?) - there is even a gas light on the wall in the dining room. The staff are really really friendly which is a refreshing change from some of the miserable buggers that seem to abound in some of the places on Lordship Lane. Cant knock this pub in any way. The only thing was it was quiet - even for a Saturday afternoon. I did read another post which was exhorting people on this forum to suuport the likes of the Duke and the Old Nuns Head and I would back that totally. Stop winging about the loss of Inside 72. There are independant pubs right on your doorstep that deserve your custom, so give them a chance. Go on you wont be sorry and these places really do deserve to be recognised for what they are trying to do. By the way there were no buggies! Not a sniff of farleys or cow and gate! But even if there were, this pub is big enough to accomodate all comers.
