  1. People are being a bit mean to ED Moots. C'mon now, it's a kid's scooter, they're probably distraught. He/she didn't say it in a mean way - in fact, it just sounded informative, letting the lady know that it belonged to someone and wasn't a giveaway. And that they'd pick it up. Calm down, folks!
  2. I think he is only capable of speaking at a volume of 11 out of 10, and about deep-fried piles of carbs... or albondigas?!
  3. Are you an Asian man, slim and in his 20s, with a slicked-back quiff and big beard, who was on the 185 headed to Denmark Hill on Tuesday night at about 9pm? If so, I was the worried mum with an ill baby on the bus, on the way to A&E at King's without enough for a fare. The bus driver kindly let me on (thanks to him, too!), and you checked on us to see if we were ok, then offered to give me money for the fare back, which I didn't accept but was very grateful for. Thank you for paying attention and thinking about other people - it meant a lot to me, as I was very worried about my baby and had been scared I wouldn't be able to get to hospital speedily. It was a community-spirited thing to do, and I hope I can pay it forward soon. Thank you!
  4. Hello All, Wondering how many people in ED might be in my situation... Have a son who will be 1 yr 7 mos when our twins will be born, so still in nappies and pramming! It would be so great to meet any other parents of multiples, esp ones with another child very close in age. I've joined the Dulwich and District Twins group, as well as TAMBA. Dying for info about bits to buy (second-hand at this point!) that will make things logistically easier, as we have a flat with stair access outside and in. Even past success stories of raising kids in that configuration would be appreciated at this point! Also, might anyone know if King's maternity students/midwives do any mother's helper shifts? I have a very limited budget, but know that after a C-section and with a toddler, I'll need all the help I can get, and have no family help... Advice appreciated! Thanks so much for any help, advice, or supportive anything!
  5. The managers seem hidden far, far behind the scenes... The staff always seem very stretched, and quite anxious-looking... I've even had staff members complain to me how understaffed the shop floor at COOP is frequently. Feel quite sorry for them! I do agree with DulwichFox that there is frequently rubbish littered around, or spills that haven't been dealt with. COOP's food is overpriced and very mediocre, but I guess you just end up paying for convenience. Honestly, M&S Simply Food's prices are marginally, just marginally higher than our COOP, or about the same. COOP has nice fresh bread, rolls and pastries at reasonable prices, I'll give them that!
  6. Am most of the way through my own 24 hours without my family... Stayed at home and did calm, productive things (yes, cleaning, but in a relaxed way, and little, niggling things I ache to get around to), watched some crap tv, then took myself out for dinner with a good book on LL... That, along with the nice walk along the balmy street, with lots of people out and about, was delightful! Thought of taking myself out to the cinema, but now I'd rather finish my book and have a good old snooze... Enjoy your 24 hours!
  7. While being aware of the cost implications of any building work, I've always thought it'd be nice to have a path running along the periphery of GG, so people hoping for a wee promenade (i.e. child and dog owners, or just those wanting a stroll/jog) could have a bit more of an expanse to do so without being in anyone's way, and then people in a hurry/on a mission could use the shortcut diagonal paths. But that's just me!
  8. Just wanted to say... Don't be so convinced that Iceland offered great value for money, for people with big or small budgets... Condiments and common branded items there were often more expensive than Sainsbury's or Tesco (often just as expensive as Coop though perhaps not M&S, though they have their own-brand stuff that can sometimes be reasonably-priced), and they had a very limited selection of fruit and veg, at average prices. Not saying M&S food isn't usually luxury/extortionate, but let's not get too excited about Iceland - it wasn't and isn't great, apart from a few own-brand frozen bits for bulk-buying/convenience. I'd have been rooting for an Aldi or Lidl, personally, but strangely no one asked me!
  9. Just wanted to write a message to send along a big thanks to a few lovely ED good samaritans who helped me on... Thursday? I was the mum with a small toddler in a pram, who had a fainting/sick spell due to morning sickness near The Clipper on North Cross Rd. I was feeling horrid, and was sitting on the pavement behind a car with my toddler waiting for my husband to pick me up, and a passing gentleman checked on me, as well as a white-haired lady with a ponytail wearing black (maybe from Jeannie Avent Gallery?), who also gave me a much-appreciated bottle of cold water. Staff at the Clipper also helped my husband to find me. Thank you all for being discreetly kind to a stranger who was having a bit of a vulnerable moment... Gives me faith that there are lovely folk out there, especially in ED! Many thanks again.
  10. Hi, Can anyone recommend a dermatologist or clinic (private, I guess, as NHS won't cover) where you can get warts removed? Cryotherapy, and southeast London preferred! Ta!
  11. Hi, I'm half-French, and would love this for my son as well. Have been going to the French nursery rhyme time at French House, which has been lovely (recommend it!), but the Frenchies seem to be leading more than attending! Hope we can work something out or someone knows of something else?
  12. Yeah, it's no good and not working at all, really (bad urban planning!), and I'll certainly think twice about crossing there from now on... It seems extreme to have to walk an extra five minutes then backtrack again to cross a 2-lane road in a residential area, but I guess needs must, especially when you have road rage-filled builders driving around!
  13. Just adding onto what Kiera said, Jacqui... Yes, it's a beautiful Chinoiserie-style place, with amazing fretwork... So interesting. Agree with Jacqui about 124... Would rather see an older, original shopfront, and knowing there might be a lovely, elderly original living in there/above it, than see some boring old hoardings for months and months (hello former Haus of Wood!).
  14. Hi, Just thought I'd put a story out there, as it's really seeming like the East Dulwich Grove/Lordship Lane crossing is getting dicier and dicier... There's no light for pedestrians, and you have traffic potentially coming through from 4 lanes and 3 directions, so you're always taking a risk there... But I had a bad experience a few days ago where I was crossing, along with 2 other pedestrians I must add, though because I had a pram I was that little bit slower (but always rush across!). A small, grey/white lorry with a long flatbed attachment (I think with dark blue writing on, and a scaffolding company) came speeding through to make the light, turning right onto ED Grove from the Goose Green side of Lordship Lane... They'd had a red until moments before, so the other pedestrians and I thought we had time to cross two lanes. They just made it across, but the lorry came to a screeching halt in front of me, blocking my way to the pavement, and proceeded to lecture me, without making eye contact, on crossing the road, using a few choice words to describe me and how to do it. All while blocking me, keeping me from being able to get out of the way of oncoming traffic coming from other directions onto ED Grove, and blocking the intersection with the back of the lorry. This was pretty panic-inducing stuff, as I had a baby in a pram with me, not to mention about a million times less safe than having the gall to cross a 2-lane road that's not safe for pedestrians through no fault of their own. I only wish I'd had the presence of mind to take a photo of the driver/his lorry and report him, but was obviously just thinking about whether he'd plow into me and the pram if I rushed to the right and in front of him (he seemed that unhinged), or if I'd be hit by other cars in the centre of the intersection if I rushed behind him to get out of the way. I understand that it's a busy intersection, and that a zebra crossing would slow things down, but maybe a pedestrian light/crossing or at the very least cameras for dangerous drivers would be a deterrent. It's always a bit hairy there, especially if you're elderly/handicapped/a child or parent with children and not as speedy as others, but this was honestly another level and pretty frightening, not just for me, but I'm sure for other drivers using LL and ED Grove.
  15. Thanks for the detailed info, Sanda! We've got our little boy signed up for August, so that's really helpful. Leah, have you started at Le Nid yet yourself? Any thoughts?
  16. Bought the Cocoon and Bee from my BIL and SIL... Initially, felt a bit nervous for my baby, as everyone else seemed to have lovely, snoozy, cosy bassinets or giant prams for their babies, without having to strap their tiny arms in, but from about 4 months I was thrilled... And now I'm the one laughing as my baby's a big 10 month-old and I have to drag him up and down stairs and buses. Carrycot will seem lovely in the very beginning, but quickly you'll be fine with the Cocoon!
  17. Sorry to get off the Mexican/Latin American subject, but anyone know what's going on with Cafe Noodle, on LL next to Franklin's? It seems to be getting progressively shabbier, and closing for more and more extended periods. And why is the Haus of Wood refurb taking forever when people seem to be able to get roof extensions done in a week 'round 'ere?
  18. Just renewing this as there's been so little response... No French families looking for a coffee break in French?
  19. Hi, I'm looking for French conversation groups in East Dulwich, as would love to meet up with other French speakers for coffee/whatever to practice! I have a new baby, so families would be especially nice. Any advice welcome, and I'm happy to go further afield than ED!
  20. I hate to say it, you see the visible dog poos, but I can guarantee you cats and foxes are weeing in it every single day. Open sand pits for kids should really have a cover on them so they don't get wet / attract wildlife, otherwise it's a bit of an open litter-box! That said, can't believe some dog owners are just allowing that to happen...
  21. Hello, Hoping for some advice for 2 separate jobs... Looking for a reliable and detail-orientated tiler for a bigger (or a couple of small-medium jobs) and a landscaper/fencer who'd be quick and cheap to put in some simple fencing. Anyone have any recommendations (or people to avoid!). Looking like everyone is busy at the moment, so we've had a few people coming to give quotes not show at the last minute. Disappointing! Thanks for any advice!
  22. Hi Ginster, Thanks for the reply! I will def look into those places, but people seem to have their hearts set on potluck at least in the first instance... So I was wondering if there might be anything in the way of a community hall/centre or the like that might be available! Thank you!
  23. A few issues with that: new to this area of town (so no one to bother to use their home), and don't have a working loo (we've gutted the flat)... Ideally, at home is what we'd do!
