  1. the two sites to the south of goodrich were market gardens, others in the area were for farriers, light industrial etc. I just cant see why it should be housing, as long as planning policies on light, overlooking are complied with.
  2. I must say i quite like it, not sure what the use for that land would be otherwise.

  4. I'd be more upset at that ugly tree obscuring the view of all those lovely buildings

I think you need to look at what Rachman actually did, i havent read of any bully boys scaring off tenants and neighbour with billy clubs. The problem with only asking local residents is that nothing will ever change. We need a professional and educated Planning department with which in Southwark, we are generally quite lucky, just be grateful that we dont live in the train crash that is Lambeth.
  6. I have looked at the design and they look pretty good, personal preference admittedly. I do think its a shame that there is a general objection to any new development, there's tons of ordinary Victorian houses and most of them aren't going anywhere soon. I think the best way for our time to leave anything behind is these small interventions, certainly better than the wholesale destruction that we are now seeing around Elephant and Castle
  7. Oh, it should really be '' rather than "" as I wasn't actually saying it, but thanks anyway!
  8. englanders and brexit should probably have been capitalised, capitalised should probably have had a Z but hey, its a forum little Miga (caps ok?) ok ok or should it have been OK or Okay? I suppose it depends upon whether they are being beaten to death on not. i hope you can unblow, (suck) your mind before the weekend, would be a shame not to.
  9. > > Part of me wonders why on earth she'd choose such > a contentious and wrongheaded policy position at > the start of her tenure. takes your mind off Brexit though doesnt it? Especially to the majority of little englanders that voted brexit to prevent immigration, there not going to get that, but they might get their grammars back. Smoke and mirrors
  10. phew, what a stinker, maybe they should have got an Architect, but then again look at the new Harris Primary!

  12. seeing as only 25% of kids get 'selected' can we not call Grammar as an exclusive system for the 75% that get excluded.
  13. There's middle class and middle class. Charter School parents are predominantly seen as middle class but not many of them find themselves hoovering up a large proportion of top acting jobs or cabinet posts, the middle class of another esteemed school on the other hand.... However thanks to good management and more importantly high levels of investment schools like the charter are sending more and more kids to top universities, the grammar schools debate is a distraction from the poor levels of funding that the schools in the rest of the country are getting, much like the 7 day a week care debate is for NHS funding.
  14. I'm not sure that the social mobility of the 50's was purely down to there being 'room at the top' The war and war effort brought people together more than any time before or since. Classes working together for a common cause, I think Thatcher may have just been a symptom of the reaction against this, but the me and mine first culture that came out of her premiership is exactly the thing that is preventing voters from supporting 'confiscatory taxes on inheritance and lifetime gifts,' Whilst I dont think Corbyn has the qualities to win an election, I do believe the movement that seems to be sprouting around him and people like Bernie Sanders are at least engaging in this level of debate. The best thing that has happened to social mobility in London is a properly funded education system- forget the Academy fig leaf, schools in London get far more money than those in the rest of the country and it shows. Gotta pay for it somehow!
  15. Thank you, I've looked on line and its definitely the plant we saw in the states. Sorry you couldn't see it well enough Sue
  16. could anyone tell me what the segmented grass like plant is in this picture?
  17. Just noting my not insignificant experience of present and ex pupils at these schools. Happy to be a middle class socialist, I don't see anything wrong in wanting an egalitarian society where everyone has a chance to fulfil their potential.
  18. i suppose it depends upon whether you want your children to have that haughty sense of entitlement and detachment from the real world that comes with such a privileged education
  19. as far as i can tell it is a method that schools use to be able to assess the 'suitability' of a child for the school. I have heard purely anecdotal stories of kids from the wrong type of family who is fantastic at sport, not getting a scholarship, whereas a more suitable but less sporty child may do. Oh for the days of 'selective' education!
  20. Shame she didnt see fit to follow the party's rules on challenging a leader and decided to follow a well organised coup whilst hiding in the shadows until so much damage has been done to the party that a leadership election is inevitable. Not what i would call great leadership material. If a decent leader had presented themselves the JC wouldnt have won, no one did. If one emerges from under their rock i would be happy to lend them my vote, unfortunately i don't think any one will
  21. This is how the legislation stands, may or may not be helpful. I think you'll find most people who put bike stores like bin stores, do so without permission and Southwark do very little about it. Local Authorities are generally so underfunded that they target their enforcement teams on much larger infringements: http://www.cyclistsdefencefund.org.uk/cycle-storage-advice
  22. Just out of interest, why are Foxtons any worse than any other Estate Agent?
  23. Would that be the German doctor? http://www.theguardian.com/society/2010/may/23/family-man-killed-gp-overdose-compensation
