  16. St. Anthony's RC Primary School in East Dulwich is situated on a busy road with complex road conditions. Unlike other nearby primary schools there is no lollipop person or zebra crossing by the school. There have been incidents in the recent past where children have nearly been hurt crossing the road to school. We want to do all in our power to prevent a child being injured. Our petition therefore asks that Southwark Council installs a School Crossing Patrol Service (lollipop person) near to the school on Etherow Street and considers carefully whether additional measures, such as a zebra crossing, should also be installed. St. Anthony's is a two form entry school and there are now 415 pupils on its roll. The roads surrounding the school are busy. As well as general car traffic, there are also two high frequency buses (the 40 and the 12) which terminate over the road from the school on Etherow Street and around the corner on Friern Road. There are no speed bumps installed in the street and the buses often travel at speed. The bus stands also create hazardous blind spots for pedestrians attempting to cross the road. In addition, numerous other buses run along Barry Road and Lordship Lane, and sometimes use Etherow Street as a diversion. Refuge accommodation is housed at the end of Etherow Street, with mini-buses turning into and reversing out onto Etherow Street at all times of the day. Although Etherow Street itself is one way, cyclists are permitted to cycle contra to the traffic flow which can create some confusion for pedestrians. During the hours of school drop off and collection Etherow Street is busy with parental traffic. Numerous attempts have been made by the school over the years to engage Southwark Council on this issue, to no avail. Through their school council, the children of St. Anthony's have themselves raised concerns about their vulnerability when crossing to and from school. As the community of St. Anthony's, we need to demonstrate to Southwark Council that there is a genuine need for a supervised safe crossing. It is important for our children's welfare that we are proactive over this issue, and not reactive, so please do add your support to this campaign. Together we are a louder voice! Please can you sign the petition at: http://chn.ge/18KfAsf
