Petition: re-open Rye Lane to buses
BrandNewGuy replied to ted17's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm not cynical by nature, but 'follow the money' is a useful rule of thumb. Notice how keen the Council is on any measure for which funds have been promised from central government (bicycle lanes, re-worked junction at EDG/Townley Road, emergency COVID measures, LTNs etc etc..). I appreciate that they're hard up these days, but they jump at the chance of funding before the issue has been properly thought out or consulted on. But again without being cynical, government seems to enjoy providing funds to local government for projects that might prove unpopular, thus diverting attention from the government's own failings. -
I wouldn't worry, ed26 - notimpressed is just trolling.

C - possibly A, but it's clear from the evidence so far of hospitalisations and deaths that the Delta variant is significantly milder in its impact than previous variants and the 'original' virus. And that's the ONS saying that, not just some government mouthpiece. And the variant has been here for two months now, so the evidence is more than just a snapshot. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/articles/coronaviruscovid19/latestinsights#overview

It was quite the star-studded night in the Camberwell Arms yesterday. Two famous local Jameses were dining there ? ex-local councillor Barber and actor Nesbit.

Genuine question for people who refuse to wear masks.
BrandNewGuy replied to Ronnijade's topic in The Lounge
Yes Long Covid and its impact on the economy ? but the latter has taken, and continues to take, a huge hit from lockdowns and restrictions. Now those might have been warranted, but there's no denying there been a massive effect on the economy from current and past measures. And of course, that has a direct effect on health, well-being and death rates. I don't think we've really yet come to terms with the impact, given the continuation of furloughing, rent holidays, loans etc. Those are all going to have to be paid down somehow. Saying that the government has got it wrong most of the time doesn't mean that they can't or don't occasionally make a correct - or at least a justifiable - decision. I don't really give a toss what Toby Young says. As with the government, he's been wrong much of the time, but I don't see why that has any impact on what we should do now. And vaccinations do indeed appear to have "apparent benefit" if you check out what the ONS says. -
Genuine question for people who refuse to wear masks.
BrandNewGuy replied to Ronnijade's topic in The Lounge
As I mentioned before, stick with the ONS for the most reliable UK data. And for what it's worth, their figures suggest that the Delta variant is significantly milder than previous variants. This article strikes me as a fair assessment of the current arguments concerning the easing of restrictions: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57678942 "... What is more, those ending up in hospital seem to be less sick, and need less intensive treatment. The risk of death, as a result, has reduced even further. In January about one in 60 cases resulted in someone dying. Today it's fewer than one in 1,000." -

BrandNewGuy replied to Ronnijade's topic in The Lounge
Hospitalisations and deaths are very low, according to the ONS, despite the increase in cases. Newer variants might be more infectious than previous ones, but they appear to be milder. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/articles/coronaviruscovid19/latestinsights#overview -
Petition: re-open Rye Lane to buses
BrandNewGuy replied to ted17's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I wouldn't hold your breath about that. I have a very knowledgeable and otherwise sensible friend who five years swore that we'd have more than 50% self-driving cars on the road by the end of 2021. I'm looking forward to collecting my winnings off him... Seriously, techno-fantasies usually fall apart as soon as they come face to face with the messy realities of a huge, complex world. We were promised jetpacks! In the meantime, Rye Lane should open up for buses again. It's bonkers that a major rail hub like Peckham Rye station doesn't have bus stops outside. -

Nothing to see here... move along. Disappointing for both tribes ? the 'thank goodness there's some real British news on for a change' bunch and the 'oh my goodness, look at these disgusting and dangerous people' lot.

Peter Crouch joins Dulwich Hamlet's board
BrandNewGuy replied to BrandNewGuy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Southwark News today on Crouch's involvement: There will no doubt be much intrigue around Crouch. Dulwich Hamlet communications and media director Tom Cullen told the News: ?We had him as a player, but it?s a coup that we?ve managed to get him now considering how busy he is. We just can?t wait to see what he offers. ?A natural fit for him is obviously the football side of things, which is beneficial for both Ryan and Gavin to be able to have someone on the board who is a football person. Our football staff need support in that area and Peter can give that. A great amount of knowledge and support. ?We?re absolutely thrilled.? Another club source told the News: ?He will be involved in every aspect of the running of DHFC, from advising transfer policy, helping out with the women?s team and even pouring pints at the bar! He will be heavily involved with both DHFC and DHFCW.? https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/sport/45521-2/ -
Peter Crouch joins Dulwich Hamlet's board
BrandNewGuy replied to BrandNewGuy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It hasn't been laid out yet, but I suspect it involves an injection of cash, though of course DHFC are keen not to go back down the road of having a moneybags owner but are committed to an ownership model which gives a pivotal role to fans. I imagine Peter will be an excellent ambassador for the club as well as having very useful contacts within the game. Very pleased to see him on board ? I'm a DHFC shareholder and season ticket holder, but by upbringing a Villa fan and enjoyed his time at Villa Park where I felt he hadn't been given a fair chance... he later went on to play for England, of course. Always comes across as an honest and intelligent critic of the game via his excellent 5 Live podcast: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06kyljg/episodes/downloads -
Excellent news for the club in difficult times: "Dulwich Hamlet have announced that former England international Peter Crouch has joined their board as a director. Crouch, 40, who played on loan at the Hamlet from Tottenham in 2000, ended his playing career with Burnley in 2019 after spells at a number of clubs including Southampton, Liverpool and Stoke. He has since forged a successful career in the media." https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/sport/45513-2/

But not a national voting agreement, constituency by constituency. The Lib Dems in the past picked up several seats in general elections due to local tactical voting, but that's quite different.
-
By-elections are easy for people to vote tactically. In general elections, the national noise makes it almost impossible for large numbers of people to see how their local vote can affect the 'bigger picture'. The chances of an anti-Tory Lab/Lib Dem/Green voting agreement are tiny, alas.

Request a Bike Hangar on your Street
BrandNewGuy replied to Otto2's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
At the risk of reigniting SE22's street-based class war, I would hope that the council look at the make-up of each road to decide where best to place the hangars. Roads with predominantly single-occupancy need hangars less than those with flats, where inside space is at a premium. The road I used to live in was nearly all single-occupancy with front gardens and yet it received one of the first hangars. Daft and inequitable. -
Agreed. Not sure why they can't make all of that road double yellow with maybe two or three disabled parking bays.

Proposed constituency boundary changes
BrandNewGuy replied to BrandNewGuy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
... or for parties that do well outside England. For years, English consituencies have been (on average) larger in terms of population than those elsewhere. This was deliberate in order to ensure at least some significant representation for Scotland, Wales and NI in parliament. But it really only just highlights the absurdities of FPTP. -
Proposed constituency boundary changes
BrandNewGuy replied to BrandNewGuy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes, the approximate equalising of populations between all consituencies (barring IOW and Anglesey) has taken precedence. Which is an improvement, but only in the context of our absurd FPTP system in which it will still can be the case that it takes the DUP 29,200 votes per seat in the Commons; the SNP 27,900 votes per seat in the Commons; and the Green Party 524,000 votes per seat in the Commons. -
Looks like the Boundary Commission want to put East Dulwich into a new "Dulwich and Sydenham" parliamentary constituency: https://www.bcereviews.org.uk

Rye Lane NEWSFLASH buses to return !
BrandNewGuy replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in The Lounge
malumbu, you still need to explain why Peckham Rye station shouldn't have bus stops outside. When I lived at the bottom end of Barry Road and commuted into Farringdon, I either walked to and from the station or, if running late or it was p*ssing down, I'd jump on the 12 or the 63. Local commuters who lived further away than that (eg top of of Barry Road) would get the bus every day. Peckham Rye is a busy SE London hub, serving London Bridge, Blackfriars and beyond, Victoria, Croydon, Bromley, Sevenoaks etc etc. There's no equivalent busy station that does not have buses outside. It's called integrated public transport which, for a busy city, is probably more important than improving cycling and walking.
