Update on the Melbourne Grove pavement outside the hairdressers. Chap came on Monday morning to 'fix' them. Seven are now wobbly again. Completely useless. And yes, it's Conways. Please can one of our councillors get them to do them *again* at their own expense and not ours. edited for sp

Very excited to see an osprey flying high over ED this morning at 8.50. It was slowly heading east-ish above Melbourne Grove at the Grove Vale end. It's migration time, so not completely unusual - there's been an osprey around the small lakes near Reigate in the last day or two and no doubt others around and about.

Should Melbourne Grove be 20mph?
BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What's a CPZ got to do with it? I was one of the loudest objectors to that idea, but would happily see 20mph limit on all Southwark's residential roads. But you like to see a web of conspiracy everywhere. -
Should Melbourne Grove be 20mph?
BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well, if you can hardly get to 20mph, why object to it as a limit? I'd approve of a 20mph limit on all residential roads in towns and cities - 30mph is crazily fast on a residential road with parking on both sides and tight corners at the ends. Our local A roads (Lordship Lane, Grove Vale, East Dulwich Grove and East Dulwich Road) are a different matter, however. I'd stick with a 30mph limit on those, but look to having other 'shared use' traffic calming measures at busy points. -

No reason why the OP didn't look both ways - but how are you expected to see a car overtaking a bus at the lights until it's right on top of you? Stop and peer cautiously around the bus while half way across the road? -
James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The twinkly light failures were due to dodgy goods > sold by Philips replaced at their expense. But that's only the latest phase in the history of these lights, which goes back about to the installation of the white ones about eight years ago, after which they gradually fizzled out.

Melbourne Grove outside the hairdessers is appalling - at least a dozen wobbly paving stones. Walking along there is like surfing. And yes, they only redid it a few years ago.

This is not in what was the proposed CPZ area. If anything, a CPZ puts stress on those streets just outside its boundaries, so the parking 'stress' at the proposed site would likely be even worse.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

I have a sneaking regard for people such as novelist Jim Crace, who 'admitted' in yesterday's Standard: 'I've never read a Dickens and I've never read a Hardy. Or a Bront?. Or a Virginia Woolf. Or a Henry James.' No doubt the literati are horrified...

Hello James, With regard to the new Morrisons development (+ flats) next to East Dulwich station on the site of the old garden centre, can you confirm that the development includes "a new Grove Vale library - double the size of the current one" as stated on the forum last year? -
Cyclists, pedestrians, car drivers ? shower of b*stards.

The coffee shop's called Piece Of Cake Cafe. Looks like it's nearly ready to open. -

Looks to me like sandwiches, snacks, coffee etc. There's a coffee machine installed and I saw a sign (which hadn't been put up) listing sandwiches. Will snoop some more... -
Maybe, but the chart in that article shows both bike and car sales on a downard trend since 2006.
-
But if cycling stayed at the same level it is today, do the think the laws are OK as they are?
-
"The data doesn't take into account second-hand car sales, only new vehicle registrations but the bike data also only refers to sales of new products." And I wonder if it includes little kids' bikes which are wheeled around the garden and the park. In any case, I don't disagree with the spirit of your conclusion, I'm just not sure these figures are a helpful part of the argument.

... and 'no junk mail' doesn't work either. It might deter pizza / estate agent flyers but 'junk mail' as it's normally understood is direct mail advertising through the post - and the postman is legaly obliged to deliver it. -
