C'mon, you're not going to change car drivers' behaviour by grandstanding. Yes, lobby for improvements for cyclists, but in the meantime accept the world as it is not how you want it to be. London is currently a potentially dangerous place for cyclists. Adjust accordingly - I'd hate to think that cyclists' deaths are being used as a political lobbying weapon.

It's less than a stone's throw from our house. I have no problem with it being there. Next scare, please...

It would help if the Council had a policy of planting native trees. Many non-natives might look pretty but have nowhere near the diversity of insect life, fungi etc that are essential for diversity. I think the Council has expressed a preference for planting native trees "wherever appropriate", but every tree planted in our road in the last few years has been non-native. I'm surprised that the London Wildlife Trust, which collaborates with the Council on tree-planting strategy, seem to be happy with this.

It's just a shame they spent tens of thousands on redoing some of the crossings, the Townley Road / Calton Avenue junction and the junction's road surface not much more than a year ago. Joined-up thinking is only a dream when there's someone else's cash to be spent.

Not been impressed by an online copy of the menu and the price of a pint? You're right, we should judge it without even going through the door.

Why buy the paper? The Guardian's continuing losses in the tens of millions a year are only sustained by the cash cow of the GMG's "Auto Trader" sell-off. Liberal eco-awareness being subsidised by the petroleum economy. Nice irony there.

Blackheath has an excellent display. It's usually very busy, but spreads out over a huge area. -
Where to dispose of cooking oil?
BrandNewGuy replied to Mustard's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
These folks collect used cooking oil in Southwark and turn it into biodiesel, but only from pubs, restauarants and so on, I think: http://www.uptownoil.co.uk/vegetable_oil_collection.html It would be nice to have a collecting point(s) for domestic oil, perhaps. Biodiesel from waste oil is the one biofuel that makes sense economically and ecologically. -
introduction of a 20mph zone in east dulwich grove
BrandNewGuy replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's the other zebra crossing nearer Lordship Lane that's being raised. As far as I can see from these plans, the one near MG/EDG is to be untouched it seems. -

Parking controls in the Dulwich park?

spider69 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Would love to see tired old and young children, > bikes, dogs and toys etc etc being taken on a bus > or walking for 30 minutes after a days expedition > to the local park or one reached by travel So how far are you from one or more of the parks and spaces I mentioned? 30 minutes was the maximum walk. "Day's expedition" is just silly... -
Parking controls in the Dulwich park?
BrandNewGuy replied to achaikos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
But a park clogged with cars is undesirable for all park users, so proposals to limit them are worth considering. There are thousands of activities that are perfectly legal, but society chooses to restrict or control them for the benefit of all. Your convenience does not trump all other considerations. And here's a list of parks and open spaces where kids (and adults) can roam free - and all within about half an hour's walk or 15 mins on a bus from the middle of East Dulwich: Belair Park, Peckham Rye Common, Peckham Rye Park, Sunray Gardens, Ruskin Park, Horniman Gardens, Sydenham Hill Wood, Brockwell Park, Telegraph Hill, One Tree Hill, Brenchley Gardens, Warwick Gardens and Dawsons Hill. You could try using your local space. -

James, just thought I'd flag up my comment on the thread about pavements. Any help would be gratefully received. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1193992,page=2 > -
Update on the Melbourne Grove pavement outside the hairdressers. Chap came on Monday morning to 'fix' them. Seven are now wobbly again. Completely useless. And yes, it's Conways. Please can one of our councillors get them to do them *again* at their own expense and not ours. edited for sp

Very excited to see an osprey flying high over ED this morning at 8.50. It was slowly heading east-ish above Melbourne Grove at the Grove Vale end. It's migration time, so not completely unusual - there's been an osprey around the small lakes near Reigate in the last day or two and no doubt others around and about.

Should Melbourne Grove be 20mph?
BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What's a CPZ got to do with it? I was one of the loudest objectors to that idea, but would happily see 20mph limit on all Southwark's residential roads. But you like to see a web of conspiracy everywhere.
