  1. I too went by this accident last night about 9pm on my way home. It was a chilling scene. I could see a motor bike and a helmet under the front wheels of the P13 bus. I hope the motor cyclist is not too seriously injured. This is a difficult junction to cross when using Underhill Road. It is not helped by the white vans parked close to the junction which impede the view along Barry Road. I have seen a few near misses in the past when vehicles edge out into Barry Road trying to cross this junction. It may well be a case for double yellow lines on all corners of the junction. I was out with the police in November at this very spot in Barry Road on a speed gun exercise which showed there were a number of drivers ignoring the 20mph speed limit. Speeding may also be a contributory factor that makes this junction less safe. I will see if there is anything that can be done to make this particular junction a lot safer. 4. This item had a lot of interest at last nights Dulwich Community Council meeting. I said that I did recognise there were some junctions within the East Dulwich ward that would need the installation of double yellow lines. A good example would be the junction at Dunstan's Road and Goodrich Road which is adjacent to Goodrich School, has eight drop kerbs which are often blocked by parked cars in the mornings and afternoons which makes it almost impossible for parents to cross the road with their children and prams. This situation is dangerous for pedestrians having to peer out between the parked vehicles. Therefore it would be appropriate to look at all of the junctions on a case by case basis. Other Councillors argued in the same vein recognising that some junctions may require yellow lines if they are busy or near schools etc. It was agreed by the Councillors present at the meeting (unfortunately Councillor Barber was not present) to hold talks with officers to look at this again. 5. I attended this planning meeting last night along with Councillor Barber. We had 90 seconds each to make representations. This does not give very much time but I think between the two of us we were able to get over most of the important issues surrounding this application. As you all probably know this application was regarding the two additional flats for the new third floor. Permission has already been granted for 8 offices on the 1st and 2nd floors. I imagine that it won't be long before these 8 offices suddenly change into 8 flats. This will of course mean that as there will now be 10 flats on the development and a Section 106 payment would be payable by the developer. The senior officer at the meeting recognised this might happen and stated the developer would still be liable even at a later stage. We will have to wait and see. We also argued about extra pressure on car parking in surrounding streets, the extra deliveries that M&S will undoubtedly generate and the increased risks to pedestrians using Chesterfield Grove. East Dulwich has been designated as 'Suburban' and therefore is subject to certain conditions regarding height of buildings and density of buildings. We would not be doing our jobs as Councillors if we completely ignored these rules. We will keep objecting where a development appears to ignore the guidelines. If we don't our constituents will soon let us know. Kind Regards Councillor Charlie Smith Labour Member for the East Dulwich Ward
  6. I have received an email from HACAN EAST who are an organisation who say they represent residents who live under City and Heathrow airports flight paths. They say that as from today the 4th of February, London City Airport will be concentrating flight paths across east and south-east London, including over parts of Southwark. the main areas affected in particular will be Dulwich Village, when the wind is blowing in an easterly direction. Easterly arrivals will affect Bexley, Sidcup, New Eltham, Mottingham, Catford, Dulwich Village, Herne Hill, Brixton, Stockwell and Vauxhall. City Airport has failed to engage residents and local stakeholders and simply published the consultation document in a buried section of their website. The CAA announced it would implement these flight paths on the 22nd of December. HACAN is currently seeking legal advice which may result in action. HACAN can be contacted through Robert Barnstone, Campaign Co-ordinator at WWW.hacaneast.org Tel. 07806947050 I will be contacting this organisation for more information. There are many residents in this area who are already being disturbed by aircraft noise especially early morning. Extra flights in and out of City Airport will only compound this problem. 7. I emailed St Cristopher's last week and was told by their fund raising manager that indeed Christmas Tree Aid had raised over ?18000 in the last few years. The trees are a bit more expensive to buy but it is in a good cause.
  8. Dear Penguin68, it is common practice for individual political party's to lay a wreath on behalf of themselves. Today, up and down the country lots of different groups will be laying their own wreaths. These will include local churches and other organisations. In Whitehall this morning wreaths were laid on behalf of all the various regiments of the armed forces. Others represented there to day who laid their own wreaths were London Transport and the Salvation Army. Charlie Smith
  9. Just got back from laying a wreath at the St Peters Church (Deeper Bible Church) at the bottom of Lordship Lane on behalf of Southwark labour Councillors. A moving service. A big thanks to the Pastor and congregation of the church. Also to the local army cadets and the band. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. Councillor Charlie Smith East Dulwich Ward Member
  10. I spotted the barriers and the debris that had been left on the pavement and in the road earlier in the week. A couple of pavement slabs had been replaced but it looked that during this work other slabs had been cracked and damaged in the process. I asked for the barriers and the debris to be removed. I have asked for the cracked and damaged slabs to be replaced. I will keep an eye open to see if it gets done. Councillor Charlie Smith East Dulwich Ward Member
  11. Dear ZT. I do not have any evidence to suggest there is a dubious relationship between Southwark and Conway's. What I have been saying is that I think it is bad practice to put all our eggs in one basket. It has been suggested to me that it is a cosy relationship. Not sure that this is OK. The problem with relying on one contractor is during busy times the contractor is for ever sending operatives from one job to the other for small amounts of time, which delays all of the works. I would like to see a situation where the contractor is only given so many jobs, and is not given any more work until they have completed an agreed proportion. I had already asked about the delay in completing the Lordship Lane works but was only given an unsatisfactory reply. I hope to take this, and the other issues, up with the Cabinet member responsible very soon. Dear FM. I understand there has been much discussion regarding the 20 mph speed limits. I believe that we can save lives with the 20 mph limit. Research has shown that a child struck by a vehicle going at 20 mph is much more likely to survive than a child struck by a 30 mph vehicle. I hope we all get used to it given time. I remember when the seat belt law was introduced. Many were against. Now we don't give it a thought. I have not recommended closure of any roads in East Dulwich. I did spell out a number of options to some residents a while back which included speed humps, more signage and as a last resort a barrier. Unfortunately this was seized upon by those residents who thought it was the only option. We will have to wait to see the outcome of the feasibility study in the new year. I don't want to use this Forum as a political tool. I have kept well away in the past as there are a few people who just want to be unpleasant. It should be a means for some grown up discussion and not for the few to snide behind their anonymity. Regards Councillor Charlie Smith Labour Member for the East Dulwich Ward
  12. I would not want anyone to get the wrong impression from Jim's post. He did not actually attend the meeting the other morning in Lordship Lane at 8am with Southwark Council Officers and a representative from Conway's. I was there at eight and pointed out the chips and the cracks and the badly laid slabs. I too am unhappy with the time this job took and will be asking the reasons why. As for JB, I think it is about time he stopped taking credit for nearly everything that goes on in East Dulwich. I am sure that if England had won the rugby world cup, he would have said it was down to him! So let us all get on serving the people of East Dulwich and not blowing our own trumpet. Regards Councillor Charlie Smith Labour Member East Dulwich Ward
