Police UK website: "Calls to 101 (from both landlines and mobile networks) cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone. The 15p cost of the call goes to the telephony providers to cover the cost of carrying the calls. The police and government receive no money from calls to 101." Not saying it's right, but the old bill aren't profiting from it.

Seeing this everywhere these days; I think you're only really entitled to say that if you can say, hand on heart, that had the vote gone the other way you would have shut up about getting out of Europe for good. Maybe that does apply to you, I don't know, but it certainly doesn't apply to Farage who, as I noted above, said in March that if Remain won a close vote, say 52-48, it would by no means be over. Oh and if you really think there wasn't a racist element to at least some people's decision to vote out then you're truly being naive.

I had great hopes of Corbyn, sick of him now - under that mild-mannered exterior there lurks an ego the size of Bournemouth. But as you say, looks like we're stuck with him now.
  4. An Ottolenghi-ish restaurant with a drinks card put together by a beer enthusiast? Oh go on then, if we must...look forward to the opening!

Seconded, get on the Surrey Canal path round the back of Peckham library and through Burgess Park, tiny bit of very quiet road then you can take the segregated superhighway all the way to Farringdon. Save thousands a year, get fitter and never be at the mercy of train companies! Here endeth the evangelising...

If you can open a box and leave it unfinished you're more artful than me.

A couple of weeks ago the left were all Nazis, now we're all like Muslim hate preachers. And how is Loz's "Let's show politicians we don't like their message" trying to negate the democratic process?
  8. Ask him about his statement in March that "if it's close, if Remain wins 52-48, then it definitely isn't over..."

  10. In the course of a twelve mile cycle ride this morning nearly got hit by a Deliveroo moped which overtook me within inches (on the wrong side of the road as I was overtaking a stationary bus, squeezing into a dangerously small gap (him/her not me) in oncoming traffic), had a Deliveroo cyclist cause me to swerve sharply as he jumped off the pavement on which he was riding straight in front of me, and saw three other Deliveroo cyclists ride straight through red lights, including one on a pelican where children were crossing. They really are becoming something of a menace and offering fuel to the anti-cyclist brigade.
  11. Just found this whilst trawling for work: http://www.peckhamplatform.com/news/call-for-submissions-brick-brewery-project-can I personally couldn't design my way out of a paper bag, but I thought anyone who has aspirations in that field - graphics students maybe? - might be interested in having a go?

Yes I know, I'm not arguing with the charge they've been given, just curious as to why if, as another poster mentioned above they'd been told, a staff member was injured, it hasn't been mentioned in the press reports. I see one of the criminals is charged with assault on a police officer, perhaps wires have got crossed.
  13. JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/two-men-charge > d-aggravated-burglary-following-incident-dulwich-c > o-op/ Ta. No mention of a staff member being injured though?

Really odd, this being the case, that there's no trace of it being reported anywhere I can find, one would have thought an employee injured by a gang of armed robbers would at least make the Standard and BBC local news.

I thought your original post was disgusting, the way you said you thought the fire station should be relocated for your benefit, that they should be banned from using their sirens in the hours of darkness, that you'd sooner people's houses burned down than your beauty sleep be disturbed and so forth...hang on, you didn't, though some of the responders to you seem to think you did.

It does raise one of my particular bugbears, as a lifelong socialist, that those responsible for making customers happy and making a shop a pleasant place to be get minimum wage while some suit who probably makes their job ten times more difficult by nitpicking every little mistake gets ten times as much...

Well...Mrs H and I looked into getting a houseboat, yes there are a lot of things to take into consideration but if you go about things the right way none of the difficulties you mention are insuperable - what put us off was the fact that however old one became the mooring fees would still be there. But you can do most of the things you say are impossible anyway, and mainly I agree with Elph, it ain't like you're crouching behind a wall in Homs, is it? Being unable to buy a boat is not "understanding the meaning of homelessness" unless you are actually kipping down tonight under a railway arch.
  20. So very sorry to hear this, used to see him around and about, dashed handsome devil he was. One of our pet rabbits died recently and I thought people would be a bit cynical about us being upset, then my father said to us "What the hell is the point in having a pet if you don't become emotionally engaged with it?" Bless you for giving him such a grand life. Take care, Rendel x

Cheeky buggers - they told a neighbour they were off after two weeks, they didn't say they were just going to shove it elsewhere! As for getting it moved I'm afraid I can't really help. I emailed Southwark parking and environmental departments more than three weeks ago, the only response I've had apart from automated we'll get back to you message was a message from environment that they were passing to parking. A single ticket was stuck on it after three days and that was all that was done before they left voluntarily at the end of last week.

The buskers I've been lucky enough to get to know in Paris and Barcelona (some of them top-notch musicians who could have made a good living in second string symphony orchestras) were busking precisely because they wanted to avoid regular employment and a pension! Life is not one size fits all...
  23. Poppy, without wanting to add fuel to the flames, I think people have generally been pretty polite in trying to point out why aircraft noise is just one of those things to which, at present, there's no real solution, living as we do in one of the world's most populous, popular and richest cities. Personally as someone who chooses not to fly I would applaud any measures to cut down on air travel, but then I'd applaud measures to cut down on car travel as well (something which bothers me far more) but neither are going to happen any time soon. I do hope you find a way to make peace with something which is clearly genuinely bothering you as, rightly or wrongly, it's going to be around for a long long time (even if they started building Boris' wrongheaded and impractical estuary airport right now, it wouldn't be functional before 2027 even without the inevitable overruns). Anyway, as we're enjoying several sundowners in the garden tonight it seems we're off the flightpath this evening, so I hope you can enjoy your Saturday night. Peace, Rendel

That means, much as you don't like it, some people may disagree with you.

If there'd been a copper there s/he could have gone after him and nicked him anyway, without a copper in situ what good would a plate do? You could take the number and report them, and I guarantee they'll do nothing at all, as I discovered when I tried to report a guy who'd caused me to skid and hit the tarmac on Tower Bridge road by driving through a red light while on his mobile - felt like I was going to be nicked for wasting police time!
