  1. Isn't the whole system rather daft? A friend who works in a cafe in Bristol told me recently that her establishment had its rating changed from five to two because a non-English-speaking employee couldn't explain to the inspector the hygiene procedure in English, despite the fact that the inspector acknowledged that he was following all the requisite procedures. Surely there should only be a single benchmark - this establishment is fulfilling the requirements of the food safety regulations, in which case carry on, or it's not, in which case it should be closed down until it does. Is that too simplistic?

But just as a precautionary addendum, WD40 will have cleaned out all the crap but it won't lubricate as such, so for the long term add whatever a good locksmith recommends to keep it running smoothly.
  3. Have you got a spare (unused) key? Try that first, often a key wears out before a lock, especially if it's a copy.
  4. malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Rendel - I assume that you knew straight away that > these are crims. Not immediately, actually, as all the ads were quite genuine-sounding and knowledgeable; I know the ones where the spec is lifted straight from the manufacturer's website etc are easy to spot, but I reckon the more cunning ones are now cut and pasting from old genuine ads. That's why I insist on meeting at their residence and seeing proofs. I know three people who've spotted their stolen bikes on eBay or Gumtree and asked the police to come along and nick the thief and been refused on the grounds that there wasn't enough evidence for the accusation (at least two of them were highly customised high-end road bikes which couldn't possibly have been anything but their own).

Yes - or in the case of a mate who foolishly bought a guitar at a streetcorner meet and got mugged for the guitar about two minutes after the seller disappeared. He could never prove it was a setup but very suspicious timing.
  6. Just a timely warning/reminder: I've been looking out for a particular model of bike as a present for a friend; four times in the past week I have contacted sellers via Gumtree, and each time the seller has offered to meet at a bus station/carpark/street corner. Each time when I've said I'll only buy if I can collect from a residential address or place of employment, contact has ceased. Guess I may have been unlucky but having four hits in a row from those who are only prepared to sell in a clandestine manner would seem to indicate that a very high proportion of Gumtree bike sales are of stolen bikes. So really, just a plea from someone who's lost several well-beloved machines in the past, by all means buy bikes from Gumtree (I do, and sell through them as well), but always ask before going to get a bike that it be collected from a residence or place of work, or that the seller shows you some ID with an address on it, or that they show a bike shop receipt. Any honest and genuine seller will understand why. If we all did this I'm sure the scourge of bike thefts could be reduced dramatically! Cheers, Rendel

Last time I looked Sainsbury's had a very limited selection of "classics" - Dark Side of the Moon, Hunky Dory etc, but you might be lucky if it's something like that you're after.

She spoke in the debate on the legal advice being released and accused the Attorney General of contempt. She's had plenty to say on Twitter. Just because she's not being reported much in the media, don't assume she's completely silent (I'm not a great cheerleader for her, particularly, but fair's fair).
  9. Gone again, well done admin - so clearly a frequent flyer!

Even if you stick to the moribund and foolish belief that the law of the United Kingdom cannot be adapted and amended as circumstances dictate (let alone that the result of a non-binding referendum must be slavishly followed at all costs) you can still object to neo-fascists marching in the street, whatever the particular cause they've chosen to hang their hate on. Back under the bridge, troll. What is it with those of your ilk and punctuation, by the way?

Ha! The compact edition and its accompanying magnifying glass has been an obsession since I was about six, and my old man passed it on to me when someone gave him the latest edition as a retirement gift. I'm hoping to avoid arrest in the foreseeable future, but it has a very good chance of coming with me to the desert island when Kirsty (or Lauren as it is now) calls - just matter of time...

It's not an abbreviation or an acronym (though there is a false etymology "backronym" suggesting that it is formed from "To Insure Promptness", but this has no validity). I love my complete Oxford Dictionary!
  14. Canning Town to Peckham Rye is all Zone 2 (assuming you come round via the Canada Water route, not through central London). Although Canning Town to Honor Oak could be called Zone 3 to Zone 3, all viable routes go through Zone 2 so you'd need a Zone 2&3 travelcard/ticket for that.

If a plumber comes to your house and takes two hours to fix your plumbing, then goes to your neighbour and fixes theirs in one hour, do you feel that you've been subsidising your neighbour's repairs?
  16. Well said BB.

  20. Is that definite about a cafe? Can't find anything online about it. Hope it's well soundproofed from the reading/working areas if so!

Let's hope Labour get back into government before the Tories can continue with austerity, having already shut down nearly 500 (over 10%) of public libraries. There's only one party that's a threat to libraries, and unfortunately they're in power (just). Outwith party politics, thank you very much James for your part in bringing the community such a fabulous new asset; living very close by we're thrilled to have it - and the fact that one can now pick up a decent bottle in the same building to accompany one's reading is icing on the cake!

Minitoots, sorry if you feel the thread has been hijacked, a particular alternative practitioner was recommended and, having come across him before, I thought it would be beneficial to post a warning that he is a charlatan, that's all. Maybe I should have ignored the subsequent comments. I'm out, hope your chap finds what he needs. Best, R

Sorry, the question of the honesty or otherwise of large pharmaceutical companies has no bearing whatsoever on whether Patrick Holford is honest or otherwise, I fail to see why you are raising it (well I can as I see you're quite the anti-vaxer and proponent of alternative medicine), it has nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Isn't this what they call "whataboutery"? I was talking about this specific "alternative" practitioner, who is a demonstrable liar and fraud (unless you actually believe HIV can be managed with Vitamin C etc) because he had been recommended and I wanted to alert anyone reading to the fact that he is a fraud. Why does the fact that large pharmaceutical companies may also behave badly have anything to do with my addressing that particular issue?

I certainly don't believe big pharmaceutical companies, but I was specifically talking about this particular snakeoil salesman who claims to be able to cure everything from HIV to autism using vitamins. Sorry I didn't add a list of all the other entities I don't believe, it would have taken rather a lot of bandwidth.
