Apart from four trains an hour to ED station, right by Sainsbury's, taking two minutes, the 42 bus every ten minutes, or (with the usual caveat about the elderly and disabled) it's less than three quarters of a mile, taking the average person about fifteen minutes to walk or two minutes on a bike! Not the best argument for "I have to use my car" I think!

When I lived down that way I would lock up at the hoops outside the police station, on the assumption that being overlooked by the station and with lots of police coming and going would put off all but the most brazen thieves. Never had a bike nicked or tampered with there.

Should you report verbal abuse?

Sorry for your experience, sounds foul. It is a crime under the Public Order Act (threatening behaviour/fear or provocation of violence). Probably worth police knowing about it, contrary to the "can't be bothered" idea often put out in the media etc, a copper I was talking to at a social event recently said they like to get lots of information about what's going on in the area so they have at least an idea of what to look out for and where bad things might be happening. If you have time, call 101 and get it logged with any description you might have, it might well help. -
I know it's probably a bit prurient, but on the other hand one does like to know what's happening in the neighbourhood, especially in the next street to mine...when I went to Peckham Rye station at 12.30pm, Bellenden was sealed with "Police line do not cross tape" from the junction with Holly Grove down to the Highshore Road roundabout, and when I came back at about 5.45 it was still closed off and still several police officers about (they looked busy so I didn't want to bother them with my nosiness). Anyone know what happened? Nothing in any news I can see.

Why thank you, don't mind if I do. Just another rather amusing thing about your post, "their freedom would be curtailed with out [sic] their own transport" - rather revealing that you regard having a car as a "freedom" issue - the freedom to pollute and end 10,000 Londoner's lives prematurely each year? To be responsible for stunted growth and development in children? For some people freedom means clean air and safe streets, not the "right" to drive a polluting machine around.

Why? By the way, re your post, it is pretty possible to carry shopping on the bus, I've done it lots of times.

JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ireland could now reach number 1 in the world > rankings by beating the All Blacks by more than 7 > points in the autumn. Not sure about that - Ireland have three matches before meeting the ABs (albeit against Italy, Argentina and USA) and the ABs have six games to play in the Championship beforehand, all of which can make a massive difference to the rankings.

I don't want to speak for the Cherry Tree but a couple of times after getting off at ED station I've nipped in there for a "comfort break" and their attitude has always been "go ahead, no worries". I do drink there as well, but staff I've never seen before don't seem to have problem.

Gym & swim membership for adult ?40 a month plus ?60 joining fee, which I guess if you swim every weekday works out to a very reasonable ?2 a swim!

Days are the same length throughout the year - 24 hours! Except for the occasional December 31st when they have to add a quarter second or whatever. Otherwise, all days are 24 hours, otherwise all the clocks would have to be reset every day...
-
Yes, sorry I meant the rate of change increases by a few seconds a day, it lengthens so that at the end of June we're losing fifty seconds a day, end of July three minutes a day - then it slows down a bit, end of August nearly four minutes a day, then after the autumnal equinox (September 23rd) the rate of loss slows until at the beginning of December we're only losing two minutes a day, and then at the winter solstice we start gaining again.
-
Midsummer is a bit of a redundant term these days as (I recall from very dry Old English lectures) it comes from the time when spring and autumn weren't recognised as seasons, so summer was anything that wasn't winter, i.e. between April and the beginning of October, which made the end of June (and the solstice) a sensible midpoint. Now summer is generally seen as being June, July and August, midsummer really comes mid-July, I suppose. diable rouge - the sun doesn't stand still for a couple of weeks! Daylight gets shorter from now on - tomorrow will have three seconds less than today and daylight hours continue getting shorter by a few seconds per day until the winter solstice.

As far as I know the only options are swimming, gym and exercise classes in a bundle or swimming and gym together, no swimming only membership.

Never seen that, looks fun. The similar signs (sans walrus!) look very good in Herne Hill too. Must say that looks better (to me) than the proposed alternatives for ED. -

Quite - in the whole transport debate there's far too much "I'm all in favour of reducing car use - as long as my specific car use isn't restricted." -

Just for the record the original publicity said funded with a grant for ?2,000 from Southwark Council, which seems fairly reasonable to me (given that our dear council would probably give Conway ?2k just to emulsion it). Not sure why EDAG couldn't just say this instead of the evasive "The project funding has been covered clearly in our previous posts and also on our website. Just have a look back, check it out online, or put in a request to Southwark Council." Re the Ingrid Beazley question, I think her initiative was tremendous and I love seeing it, but I don't see why that precludes any other public art in ED. No connection with EDAG and not very keen on any of the proposed designs, but we are talking about a mural under this bridge, it's not going to ruin a lovely vista exactly, is it? -

Jacob Rees-Mogg has just tweeted that "The Brexit dividend is obvious, if you spend less on one thing it is available for something else." Felt compelled to reply "I spend many hundreds of pounds per year to keep up my subscriptions with various agencies and professional bodies. If I ditched them I would indeed have hundreds of pounds extra - and I would lose tens of thousands as I wouldn't get any work."
