Definitely, when I was twenty I hated climbing, now I'm nearly fifty I'll go miles out of my way for a good hill (in two weeks time we're making a 600 mile round trip to climb five miles of road - Great Dun Fell in Cumbria, the highest paved road in the UK). Leith Hill is about seven miles from Box Hill to the southwest, it's about 30% higher and 30% steeper than Box Hill. Usually do Leith first and Box on the way home, Box feels like a pimple after Leith!
  2. Hopefully halfway up Leith Hill on the Surrey Loop, but generally, in the words of Michelle Shocked, "Anywhere but here" - here being within range of any television showing the sycophancyfest.

Sorry, we cut the hands off criminals who have low IQs? Or criminals and people who have low IQs? Bloody silly comment either way.

On the wider point I agree that both her support for Iraq and the Gambling Bill were hardly her finest hour, but wouldn't you hope when you die that people might focus on your good qualities, just for a day or two?

Of course you can - Margaret Thatcher was a prime example of a woman-hating woman who notoriously didn't like promoting women - only one rose above junior minister level in her whole tenure. The definition of sexism is having a prejudice towards or discriminating against a particular gender, it doesn't say anything about having to be of the opposite gender. I happen to know a person of Asian heritage who is shockingly racist towards other Asians. Odd, but it happens.
  6. As the original thread got lost in the cyberattack, I hope it's OK to start a new one: Tom Wolfe. The Electric Koolaid Acid Test was a fascinating look at the end of the sixties from one who was there, and I think Bonfire of the Vanities and A Man in Full deserve to be regarded as two of the great American novels of the turn of the millennium - a US Dickens, no less.

  8. I do quite a lot as my sister lives down there, also it's on the way to Box Hill! This is the way I go, basically it keeps you on pretty quiet roads apart from an inevitable busy stretch through Balham and Tooting.
  9. That's all there was, looking online not much more in the papers except that he was last seen in the early hours of Friday morning in the Clapham/Battersea area.
  10. It's worth noting that the C&G's ratings on Tripadvisor are just awful, with 42% of 256 reviews giving the lowest rating. Many of those reviews complain about incompetent and rude staff. There's even someone complaining about exactly the same issue as jellybeanz, viz being told they were fully booked when the dining room was empty. Reading the reviews (I only know the pub from having a drink outside, never eaten there) it sounds as though just about everyone gets rude and incompetent treatment, regardless of colour, but not everybody attributes it to racism.
  11. alice Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Everyday racism is like everyday sexism. Still > here. It most certainly is. That doesn't make every accusation true, or every misunderstanding or bit of bad service experienced by a person of colour racism.
  12. The exact words used were "I don't wont to continue with this thread and want to draw a close to this matter." Sounds like saying that's the end of the matter to me, and not just online, otherwise surely they would have said "I do not wish to discuss it further here and will be dealing with it through other channels."
  13. Sorry, yes I think you're right. It's not a criminal offence, but it is against the law. Still a very serious accusation to throw about then just say that's the end of the matter.

  15. Just seen this on the Met's Twitter, keep an eye out please.

We shall see. If I'm wrong and the Crown and Greyhound actually did deny service to someone because of their ethnicity I will happily publicly apologise. Personally I find it extremely hard to believe and until it's demonstrated otherwise I remain of the opinion that someone at the C&G messed up on a booking and the OP's wife has rushed in hotheadedly hurling unfounded accusations of racism about. Either way, you can't just throw public accusations of racism - a hate crime, we're not just talking a bit of rudeness here but a heinous criminal offence - at a person or a business and then say "I want to draw this matter to a close" without further explanation, it's just not on.

Drop the bone now, ITATM, there's no meat left on it.
  18. To make a long-awaited return to the point, could jellybeanz tell us why they deleted the content of their OP on this thread? And why they haven't carried out their threat to tell their "3000 Twitter followers" about this alleged incident? If it's true that a local business denied service to someone because of their enthnicity that business must be called to account, apologise and detail the remedial measures they're going to put in place. If it's not true, the accusations should be withdrawn and an apology made by the accuser. An apology should be made to Admin in any case for accusing them of racism for removing the potentially actionable first post. You can't just chuck such a serious accusation out there on social media then think it disappears if you remove your text.

Don't think I've ever told someone they're not allowed to stop posting. How would that work? How often would I insist that they post?
  20. Quit the unedifying personal feud, would you, ITATM? You made a fool of yourself before trying to start a hate thread against me before Admin deleted it, you're going the same way again.
  21. Deleted as realised that ITATM's comment wasn't worthy of a reply.
  22. intexasatthe moment Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Cut them some slack . For accusing a business of deliberately refusing service to a person because of their ethnicity, and going on to accuse the Admin of the EDF of racism? No.
  23. alice Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > jellybean?s a long time poster. I?ll believe them. > rh back off. No, Alice, I won't, when I see rude, stupid and unfounded allegations of racism. There's enough real racism in the world without people flinging around unfounded allegations because they're having a hissy fit about a restaurant messing up their booking. Why precisely does longevity of account on this forum make someone's allegation more believable? And while we're here, why do you think you're some sort of unofficial admin? Make your points, stop the self-righteous telling off of others please. Still waiting for anything to come up on Twitter telling jellybeanz' 3000 followers about this terrible racism.
  24. Jellybeanz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I don't wont to continue with this thread and want > to draw a close to this matter. No mate, you don't get to say that. You've accused a respected local business of refusing custom to people on the basis of their ethnicity. Back it up or apologise.
  25. Buggeringly tiresome. Someone fucked up your booking, whatever you (or your wife, who's actually posting here?) say, there ain't no racism going on here. Are you seriously claiming that the Crown and Greyhound deliberately discriminates against BAME people? Seriously?
