I take "extreme objection" [sic] to your using that term about him. Why is he a saboteur and whom is he sabotaging? ETA if you read what I said properly, I said I knew you weren't that sort of person and that's why you should be more careful about throwing that sort of term around. -

And yet I taught to 2005 and am married to a current teacher and have many friends who are still teachers and not one has ever been told not to use that term - sounds like one of those typical urban myth "Oh do you know in the 80s you weren't allowed to ask for a black coffee in County Hall" nonsenses. ETA and if you ask am I calling you a liar, then yes.

Leader selected by the members of the majority party (or a coalition agreement), cabinet members selected by the leader. It's basically Westminster in microcosm.

The Mayoral role is totally apolitical, although yes s/he is selected by councillors. Not sure whether they have to be a councillor first. The Chief Executive is an administrative non-elected role; the leader of the council and his/her cabinet make the policy decisions, ratified by the council assembly when necessary.

DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Sidiq Khan is a Saboteur. Knowing your previous history, DF, much as I often don't agree with you you're not that kind of person, so I'd respectfully suggest that calling a Muslim politician a saboteur is getting close to the "enemy within" rhetoric of the extreme right. I know that's not what you want to say, but it's a pretty silly thing to say, who/what is he sabotaging and why? > He discourages the use of private cars And that's a problem because? If you feel it's a problem your beef is with Tooley Street, not City Hall. BUT continues > to degrade our Public Transport Services. He's done some very good things with public transport, e.g. the Hopper fare. He offered to take over urban rail and that was all set until the government pulled out of the agreement in a transparent piece of pure spite. What would you like him to do in the face of a ?700M p.a. cut to TfL's grant? You can have the existing level of services or better with vastly increased fares, or you can have affordable fares and face some cuts. Again, it's central government who have imposed this massive cut, not Sadiq, why are you ragging on him about it? -

That's a bit disingenuous James, you must know that central government has already slashed the TfL budget and is going to remove its grant in its entirety in less than two years, meaning a shortfall of ?700M per year. Mr Khan can cut services or raise fares, either way seems he's going to be blamed for government cuts. -

Might as well chuck it all in and go back to feudalism then, eh? You will always, it is true, have those who lead and those who follow. That doesn't have to imply the totalitarian "ruling" and "obeying" and "submitting", and most importantly who leads and who follows can be predicated on ability, desire and work ethic rather than accidents of birth and whose many times great grandad was best at nicking land and goods off others a thousand years ago. -

Be a start though. How can you ever hope to have true equality in a country where the head of state is selected through an accident of birth, paid a fortune and treated by the majority of politicians and media as akin to a deity? It heavily reinforces the concept that each has their allotted place. -

Lovely interior, which has the added bonus that when inside one can't see the exterior, rather as de Maupassant used regularly to lunch in the restaurant in the Eiffel tower, "as it's the only place in Paris one can't see the Eiffel tower." -

Wheely Bins Left out on the pavements
rendelharris replied to karpar's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Something of a pet peeve...we put our bins out as late as possible the night before collection and the binmen are very good at putting them back inside our gate, but at least 80% of houses on our street just leave them out all week, when they have plenty of space to keep them inside their boundaries. It's massively inconsiderate and selfish not to. -

Indeed, but that's an argument for making sure those people get ID, not for ruling out ID at polling booths. -
Alas, cella, some of us are human. But it is worth remembering, if you forget and can't get down to the library in time, that one can renew one's loans online for no charge.

Thanks. It has always seemed odd to me that one can just walk in without even a polling card, give a name and address and get a ballot paper; I know in France one has to show ID. -
Have you tried Indigo Car Hire? They say they accept new drivers and list London City Airport as one of their pickup locations.

When I was cycling through Penge the other day (for I'm a demon for pleasure) I noticed several posters saying "Live in Bromley? You must have ID to vote". I assume this is not going to be the case in Southwark?
