It may well be standard practice, but that's been going on since the cold war, previous defence secretaries didn't feel the need to say "I will not hesitate to defend our waters" when ordering it - who's making political capital? As for Corbyn, yes he would have been briefed, and he clearly felt that, from that briefing, a rush to judgment was being made and counselled caution. If he wanted political advantage he would have got far more from jumping on the tubthumping bandwagon. Whether he's right or wrong, he's doing what he thinks is the right thing, and for that he gets pilloried in a manner worthy of the McCarthy era. The Tories and their media mouthpieces are the ones making political capital - notice how Brexit and the scrapping of free school meals for a million children hasn't been getting a look-in?

You could do it for less than ?1,500 a year (average, obviously it would have to be weighted according to household size, income, value etc) on council tax - 3.5m households in London, TfL fare revenues ?4.6bn. It would be utterly transformational for London, one would imagine, but one doubts anyone would ever have the political courage to try it, or that the voters would go for it - even though most probably spend more than that per year on fares anyway. -
It's all entirely subjective - I feel spending ?200 on a pair of trousers is sinful, but then I regard ?5,000 on a carbon fibre bicycle as an entirely justifiable expense. As long as you pay your taxes, stand your round and hopefully slip a few bob to charity when you're flush, it really isn't anyone else's business where your money goes. I daresay someone who spends ?40 on afternoon tea gets as much pleasure out of doing that as someone who spends ?40 to go to a football match...

He used to keep a pet tarantula on his desk to intimidate people, and sent the Navy out to shadow Russian ships saying "I will not hesitate to defend our waters" when they were, quite legally, sailing through international waters. Also claimed that Russia had plans to paralyze the UK by cutting our electricity interconnectors under the sea (experts swiftly pointed out that even if they were, which they weren't, that would result in the UK losing 5% of total capacity). He's a posturing little prick who seems to think he's the reincarnation of Churchill.

No idea of the veracity but it was suggested on World at One yesterday that Putin's worried about the turnout in the upcoming elections making him look bad (even though he's got it sewn up) and that he also wanted a timely reminder to anyone thinking about spilling the beans re Russian help for Trump to win the election that there would be consequences.

Don't forget Champion Hill (the road) doesn't only run alongside the Fox, it turns left and runs along the top to meet DKH at the summit - so everything down the slope from it, and to the left of DKH as you go up, is Champion Hill - hence the estate above Sainsbury's being the Champion Hill estate. Dog Kennel Hill is the section of the hill to the right as you go up, hence Dog Kennel Hill estate. It's actually not the football stadium name that's an anomaly, it's the Sainsbury's calling itself DKH Sainsbury's; chosen I guess for its nearest major road.

You kidding me Rah? That's the way we reach the main road and it's always so jammed, both sides, that if there's another car coming we have to reverse back to the end of the street. Admittedly that's on weekends but is it that different weekdays? -

Thanks, I'll check 'em out - I almost wouldn't mind paying ?200 for the flight if they'd take the bike free, it's paying twice (or more) as much for the bike as the seat - doesn't make much sense when I weigh eighty kilos and the bike weighs eight!

rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > CPZs are an example of lobbing your sh1t over the > fence. The trouble is, round Copleston Road, we've already had everyone else's shit lobbed over our fence - our roads are now packed with parkers from outside the area, particularly large vans, as a result of the recently implemented CPZs on DKH and around the toastrack. So whether we agree with the principles of CPZs or not, we've got a choice between having one or being a carpark for traffic from many miles around. -
Just looking into flying down to the south of France in the summer with some mates for a crack at some of the Tour de France climbs - flights down to Toulouse a very reasonable ?65 return. Taking the bikes ?150 return per bike on top of the seat cost! Ferry for us, I think.

As Penguin says, probably kids - why would burglars bother? Snopes put it pretty well: Nearly all property crime is predicated upon the desire to enrich oneself or one?s interests with minimal effort, and an element missing from the belief that thieves pre-mark homes to rob is one that sufficiently explains where the added value in such a proposition lies. It?s possible to burgle a home without first essaying a legend detailing its contents and the temperament of its occupants, an unpleasant reality of day-to-day life that plays out with unfortunate frequency. As mentioned in one of our articles about a similar legend, gangs of criminals working together can simply jot down the addresses of their targets and share them by a variety of means; there is no benefit or advantage to risking exposure and foul-ups by physically marking homes. -
Can you give the location? Like peckhampam, I've never noticed, and I pass through most days!

Given the amount of stick I've received from Welsh friends in the last twelve hours, I'm going to be cheering for Italy today!

Goodness England were rotten - exciting finish though, what was that French dude thinking trying to make a long touch? Well picked AM, though pretty sure your Italy pick will go a bit wrong...
-
Was that just what you saw someone paying? If so they probably had an 18+ student card, which gives 34% off offpeak fares, which, if my maths is correct, would reduce ?2.50 to exactly that.

Ladies! I enjoy the posts both of you make, and unlike some people don't think I have a right to try to act as an unofficial admin (who do a grand job without the need for us to pitch in), but you are going round in circles a bit now! Have a nice weekend, both!

Not this one again! Comes up every six months or so - that Capital report is of the funeral shooting back in 2011 (why they can't date their reports I don't know!), so whatever was happening last night, it wasn't that.

You mean the edging to the island? Kerbs! You're not seriously claiming people are going to walk straight on into them, trip over and fall into the traffic? Can't see it myself - for a start they'd have to jump the first kerb then run on into the next one...I'm all for keeping things safe but with all respect I think you're imagining a "lethal" problem that just doesn't exist. Advice/comments wanted re. mirror in kitchen

There are plenty of toughened mirror splashbacks available which can resist temperatures up to 400c (I know because we were considering one a while back, then I realised I'd have to see my face while cooking, a punishment nobody should suffer), but don't use an ordinary mirror, it will crack pretty quickly.
