Transport in south london

So why, if you've decided to go, keep on about it - as nxjen said, it feels like you don't want to leave it until everyone's agreed transport round here's crap. For you it obviously is and I don't doubt your genuine frustration, but that's not everyone's experience. -

I agree with Fox for once - and he's even left out the ED - Wimbledon, PR & DH to Clapham Junction options which open up lots of access to SW and W London. I'm not disbelieving or belittling anyone's stories but I've lived many places around SE London and felt a lot worse off for transport elsewhere - Brixton, for example. Plus of course it wouldn't be me if I didn't add the fabulous new cycle routes making it easy to reach the City and beyond in 20-30 mins (yes, I know not everyone can or wants to cycle, but it is now a safe segregated option). -
I have no sympathy at all with the attitude of Alleyn's and the coach companies on this issue, finding it arrogant, selfish and dangerous, but I would guess that coaches parking on that drive might compromise fire service access to the main building? How old are the pupils being collected/dropped off? When I was at school (in the previous century) our playing fields were three miles away from the school; in the first two terms of our first year we were taken there in coaches, after that pupils were expected to make their own way there by bike or public transport. Too much to ask?

Socrates31 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The pub already causes noise and disturbance to > its neighbours, surely this will only make the > problem worse? I agree that a forty-seven bunk hostel would quite possibly cause problems, but what problems does the Cherry Tree cause in terms of noise and disturbance at present? I go in there regularly and am always impressed by how orderly it is, and they're rigorous about closing the garden at ten. Admittedly I'm not often in there at closing time but I often go past late at night and don't see any trouble. Is it really causing noise and disturbance beyond levels reasonably associated with the simple fact of having a pub?

My mistake Alan, apologies - but same applies, if you click on the title you have to scroll to see your sad report, if you just answer the first post, as JB clearly did, you won't see it. Anyway no harm done, and may I add my condolences to Dr.McColl's family, never met her but a friends' family have been eulogizing the care she gave them. -

No, I don't think you understand. If Cllr.Barber saw a message a couple of pages back and replied to it the reply will appear without him having seen the recent messages. He would have had no idea that such sad news had been posted. I hold no brief for Cllr.Barber, who is neither my councillor nor of my party, but he seems a decent public servant who makes a lot of effort for local people based on what is said on this forum. Your accusations of insensitivity are unfair and undignified. -

This is unjustified. Cllr.Barber was replying to a comment made some days ago; if you read a comment and then click reply your reply appears at the end of the message list. It might look like he's just shoved a comment in under the sad news, but if he was looking at comments made in previous days he wouldn't even have seen the ones made today. It might look as if he's being insensitive but he's not, maybe you should be a bit more sensitive yourself and consider what might have happened before leaping on your high horse. -
Man arrested in connection with Dulwich Park stabbing
rendelharris replied to gerry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well, the victim's (solicitor) girlfriend says the sentence is severe, more than they expected and that they are happy with it and that they feel justice has been served. Their opinion is not the only one which matters of course, but one would say it's certainly the most important one. -

Other than that, spot on. ETA and it's spelled Sadiq, at least get that right. -
Petition: Army dogs which saved ?hundreds of lives? to be put down
rendelharris replied to IlonaM's topic in The Lounge
Got to agree with jimlad unfortunately - I've known a couple of police dog handlers who've taken their retired dogs into their homes as their pets - indeed I believe this is the norm, the ones I knew had (by regulation) to keep the working dogs in backyard pens and then when they reach retirement they move a new dog into the outside space and keep the old chap as a pet (same as some farmers I've met who do the same with their sheepdogs). Sadly sometimes working dogs - especially ones like this who have been exposed to horrible trauma - can't be domesticated and it might be kinder, heartbreaking as it is, to euthanize them than to keep them in a pen somewhere. I'm not always a cheerleader for the military but I'm pretty sure they won't be doing this out of wanton cruelty, rather as a sad last resort. -

Just as close to athlete's foot! I agree, it weren't so good back then, but some of their stuff now isn't at all bad - particularly the "fish" fingers, which go very well in sandwiches.

I can remember talking to him (I assume it was him, one legged Irishman, looks a bit like a refugee from The Dubliners?) and getting him something to eat near DKH Sainsbury's at least three or four years ago; he seems to be one of those who doesn't want "official" help and I doubt he would accept it whether or not anyone gave him anything "unofficially." Good on those who've helped him I say; refusing to help on the grounds that the authorities will then take care of him is a pretty dubious position in more than one aspect, in my opinion.

Thwarted burglary? 3am doorbell
rendelharris replied to legalalien's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes do tell the police - if nothing else it'll help them build up a picture of potential areas to watch - and next time (hopefully there won't be a next time) something like this happens, call 999. Police advice is to use 999 "when someone suspected of a crime is nearby" - I think three lots of scooterists ringing your bell at 3AM certainly makes them suspicious. The police will take you seriously and anyway, the worst that can happen is that the operator will transfer you to 101. Hope you're not too shaken. -

Great fanfare from the Brexiters today because the Bank of England say that the banks could survive a disorderly Brexit. This is based on the fact that the banks have passed their latest stress tests, which study how they would cope with a 4.7% drop in GDP, 33% drop in house prices, 27% drop in the value of the pound and interest rate rising to 4%. Well huzzah, yes we may be about to crash into that iceberg but this time we've made sure there are enough lifeboats, so nothing to worry about.

As I've previously pointed out to you, if you want to see real rudeness go back in your history and look at when you and others were bullying Louisa extremely unpleasantly last year. Oh and don't bother asking questions when you're not interested in a rational and sensible answer but just want an excuse to have a go. I know you got all upset because you were caught out lying about me not long ago, but it's time to let your humiliation go and move on. You'll feel ever so much better for it.

Or is it ok for those other teachers who > think the system's wrong to carry on working > within it? Just wondering. Those are facets of the system which most teachers would agree need changing, and indeed they continually lobby and take industrial action to try and effect change. That's different to thinking the whole system is wrong; in very long experience of both teaching and talking to other teachers online, uncleglen is the only person I've ever encountered working in comprehensive schools who believes that it is a system which "deprives poor bright kids of a decent education." If someone believes that is the case and continues to work in the system I'd say they are a shocking hypocrite, wanting to change parts of the system to make it better and believing that the whole system is rotten are entirely different things.

But when, as happens often on this forum, details of a crime are posted with just the details that they were committed by "black boys," "a black man" etc and nothing else, does that help anybody? Are we all to keep a careful eye out for "black boys"? To my mind all it does is promote a negative stereotype and won't do anything at all to assist in the apprehension of the perpetrators. -
