I had ?2 on Rory to win the Open at Carnoustie in 2007. He was 17 years old and 2000/1 and when he had the joint lead after the first round - I was getting excited.... 32s for the US open is prob ok - but its a very difficult competition to predict the winner - comes up with some odd champions due to the very tight courses the us opens are played on.

I tried a friends Taylor Made R7 recently (the small headed one not the 460cc head) and thought it was brilliant. Have bought one on ebay - but still waiting for it to arrive. I'm hoping it arrives by Wednesday as am off to Belfast and Donegal for 4 days golf next weekend :) (bloody volcano permitting) The newer r9 is also out but prob ?250/300 for that one.

I just happened to turn on the TV on Sunday about 6 and was surprised to see him on the leaderboars, a few shots back, as he had been playing badly recently. We were having dinner with friends later so I had to pop back in every now and again to check his progress - the eagle at 15 was amazing for a player already in the lead - he has the will to lead from the front where many golfers actually get conservative - but pushing ahead is a real winner's quality. The other 6 people we were having dinner with, none of the 6 had ever heard of Rory McIlroy. I was very surprised at that. But I thought, that's not going to stop me seeing a little bit of history, so I ate my dinner and moved to the tv room. No manners, but I sort of named my son after him so we had to watch it (little Rory was asleep but he was at least facing the direction of the TV...:))

Rory McIlroy wins his first tournament in the US against a star studded field and he did it a few days shy of his 21st birthday. His final round of 10 under par 62 was seen as one of the best ever rounds of golf to win a US PGA tour event. He has really announced himself to the US golfing public. He had 17 birdies and one eagle in the last 36 holes - 16 under par for the last two rounds. And only 20 years of age and from Belfast. Highlights (follows once the short advert has ended)

lost small on both guineas - did not see either race. Currently have some good football bets on: ?140 on Fulham to win Europa at 3.8 (hedging the 50 I had on hamburg) Inter to win CL Chelsea to win Premeirship from before the old trafford game (having seen arsenal slip away I seemed to have picked the right team, assuming wigan do not cock things up)

What did he predict exactly? If he predicted a bust then big deal - even I know the economy goes in cycles. If he predicted that the US sub prime mortgage market was going to bring down the world's banking system than hats off to him. I don't know what he predicted - can any one tell me?

I guess a change in bonus culture is needed. But it should be a pre planned and implemented over a period of time. The problem with the Lib Dem proposal is that currently bankers may have a remuneration package that is paid in 2 parts being "say" 50% salary and 50% bonus. If you take someone on a 50k salary who gets an average of a 50k bonus each year then that person is going to be limited to ?52,500 under the Lib Dem proposal whilst their previous remuneration was annually 100k. If the proposal was brought in - that person would negotiate a salary of as close to 100k as possible and forego any bonus. Remuneration committees in finance houses use the bonus to allow flexibility in how they reward people. Limiting the bonus to a fixed number limits that flexibility. They would just have to pay higher salaries and the ?2,500 limit would achieve nothing. It would also disadvantage the banks in that their remuneration committees would have no flexibility to be able to reward the right people and not reward poor performers. So guess what - everyone gets paid their fixed remuneration irrespective of their performance - just what people complain about in the Public sector. So lets all take a step back in time - thanks Nick Clegg. I don't work for a bank either. If Vince Cable is an economics genius then fair enough but that does not mean he has a business brain. What does the head economist at Shell do?

Telegraph today says Clegg exposed for 'his lightweigt nature and flabby lower sixth intellect'. I dont understand why the public think he performed better than brown. To me the lib dems are the most left wing of the 3 parties at the moment. Is that how they see themselves?
-
Just watching a re run of the debate. Clegg seems to have nothing positive to say now the economy is an important issue. I'm not sure Brown has made enough of his success in saving the financial sector of the UK and perhaps even the global economy. Cameron is on the attack. But not sure he would have achieved anything in 2007 when London was in crisis. Clegg seems weak on this debate. He thinks mentioning the questioner's name and talking to the camera will win him an election. Who will benefit from this third debate? Edited to say - Clegg has just confirmed the ?2500 maximum bonus for bankers - he and Cable are just completely out of touch....
