  1. Streatham & Marlborough is a non-profit, volunteer-run, community cricket club based between Forest Hill and East Dulwich, though we also play matches in Peckham Rye Park, Mayow Park (Sydenham), South Norwood Lake, and sometimes Hilly Fields. We provide cricket to more than 500 playing members - girls, boys, women and men. In 2023, we organised 482 matches and delivered around 49,000 hours of organised cricket for the local community. Our pavilion is very near the end of its viable life, and we are looking to replace it. A building survey in 2023 reported that the roof, walls flooring and foundations are all in an advanced state of decay, as well as the electricals and plumbing. In 2022, a part of the building collapsed during a storm. The report estimated it would cost over £500,000 to repair, which is not viable. We feel the building needs to be replaced as soon as possible, because if we become unable to use the building, the club would most likely be forced to close down and would be lost forever. The club is investing £125,000 raised by members to complete the design phase of the project, and we have £450,000 in grants towards the construction phase. We are in the process of applying for additional government grants of roughly half a million pounds to make the project happen. We hope the new building will be widely used by other community groups when it is not in use for cricket. For example it would be well suited to yoga, pilates, martial arts, gymnastics, dance, Scouts/Guides, amateur theatre rehearsals...or...you name it! If you help run a group that might be interested in using the space, we like to hear from you (see the last question below). We invite you to let us know your views via this extremely short (three questions) form: https://forms.gle/KeBcCUhFFbpHP9wR9 Thank you. 3. Kids inspired by the World Cup to play cricket? We're running a cricket summer camp for 4 weeks over the summer holidays for kids between Reception and Year 8. For full details and to book, see the club's website: https://www.smccjuniors.co.uk/2019-summer-holiday-cricket-camp You can also book on website of our brilliant coaching partners, 360 Cricket, here: https://www.360cricket.co.uk/book-a-camp === Who are the camps for? * Kids aged 5-13 at the time of the camp. * Girls and boys * Up to 45 kids per day (we had 20/day last year) * Kids of any ability level from beginner to advanced. Players will be split into appropriate groups each day * You don't have to be a current member of the club - the camp is open to everyone * Younger players up to around age 9-10 will generally be in a soft-ball group; older players from around age 9-10 upwards will generally be in a hard ball group (and should bring full protective kit if they have it) === When is the camp? 9am-4pm each day Mon-Thu on the first four weeks of the state school summer holidays Mon 29 July - Thu 1st Aug Mon 5 Aug - Thu 8 Aug Mon 12 Aug - Thu 15 Aug Mon 19 Aug - Thu 22 Aug === Where is the camp? The camp is held at Streatham and Marlborough Cricket Club, located between Forest Hill and Dulwich (near the junction of Lordship Lane and the South Circular). === Do I have to book the whole week? Can I book just a day or multiple weeks? You can book your child or children into whichever days you like, but obviously kids will probably enjoy attending a full 4-day week the most. You can also book more than one week if you wish, but we'd only recommend that if your kids are extremely keen on cricket, because 4 full days of cricket is a lot at that age, and the activities each week are likely to be similar (though adjusted for the group of kids attending). === How much does the camp cost? When do I need to book by? * ?45/day * 10% discount when booked at least 30 days in advance. * Online booking for each week of the camp will close on the Saturday just before the start of the week. === Girls very welcome! We are a female-friendly club. This summer term we've just had 250 kids playing at the club, 50 of whom are girls. We also have a women's team for girls to progress into from Year 8 upwards. === If you have any questions, please try our website first as most questions are answered there. Also feel free to post a comment here or email us (details on SMCC Juniors website - see above). === New members in all sections (juniors, women, men) are welcome to join at any time of year. 7. I wrote to our local councillors and am delighted to have received the following response showing how strongly they support the proposal, which I reproduce here with Councillor Andy Simmons' permission... Dear David, Thanks very much for your email. We?ve been campaigning on this for a very long time now and it has been a huge challenge to persuade and cajole Transport for London into bringing forward this proposal for consultation. In the end it took meetings with Sadiq Khan?s Deputy Mayor for Transport and TfL?s Head of Surface Transport to get this moving. TfL have a very strong focus on keeping traffic flowing and have used this issue repeatedly over the years as a reason to refuse to take action. The design that TfL has brought forward involves a two stage crossing with a change in turning priority for westbound traffic on Dulwich Common at the junction. This means that, for example, when pedestrians are crossing halfway from the east side of Lordship Lane towards the Harvester there will be two lanes of traffic turning right from Dulwich Common into Lordship Lane. TfL claim that three straight across crossings would lead to grid lock on the South Circular. We asked for a straight across crossing at each arm of the junction and will include this desire again in our consultation response to Transport for London and continue to lobby for this. We?re also very happy to support the request for a Keep Clear area on Dulwich Common. Best wishes, Andy ---------- Councillor Andy Simmons Labour Councillor for Dulwich Wood Ward
  8. Thanks, Sue. Abe and everyone else, please feel free not to mention in your replies to the consultation that there is a bar near the junction (wishing I hadn't mentioned it now!) but the junction certainly is dangerous. TfL always argued that people should walk the 100m or so to the next set of lights, but we all know that in reality hardly anyone does that. The junction ought to be made safe for pedestrians. End of. (Still an expression) :-)
  9. @Abe_froeman, even if you've not had 2-3 pints or glasses of wine, it's a ridiculously dangerous junction. We have over 200 kids of all ages and their parents coming to training and matches every week in the summer, plus 6-7 men's teams and 2 ladies' teams using the club. A lot of us use the junction as pedestrians and it's a potentially fatal accident waiting to happen unless TfL install pedestrian crossing signals. Please support the proposal. Thanks.
  10. TfL are consulting on putting in some proper pedestrian crossings at the junction of the South Circular and Lordship Lane. https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/a205-dulwich-common-lordship-lane/ This is really important to me because it?s right outside the cricket club that I help to run. Many of our secondary school aged players make their own way to and from the club, and this junction has been a real worry for a long time. Even for adults crossing either on their own or with young children it?s a pretty terrifying junction to cross. We also have a lot of adults using the crossing as pedestrians under the influence of alcohol. This includes both senior players after matches and a period of time in the bar, and parents of kids every Friday evening during the summer when we also have the bar open and many parents enjoy a good few glasses of well deserved refreshment. I enquired about this junction to local councillors many years ago and was told that they had already been lobbying TfL (who control the South Circular, not Southwark) for years without success. It is, in my humble view, many, many years overdue that this absolute no-brainer of a safety improvement gets done. In my view, the following two changes should also be made to the proposal: a) Turn the third crossing point (the one nearest the church) into one that has pedestrian signals also. Why would you not? It?s not in the nature of people (especially young people) to walk extra yards in order to use another crossing. They will use the shortest route. I would say it?s a ?must have? that all three crossing points have pedestrian signals. b) Add ?KEEP CLEAR? areas on the road opposite the cricket club and tennis club so that cars can more safely pull out, rather than having to dart out into the moving line of cars. I have been doing this manoeuvre about twice a week for the last four years, and it?s nearly always a case of having to drive into the westbound lane in order to try to get motorists in the eastbound lane to let you in. It is often a slightly hurried and precarious move. A ?KEEP CLEAR? area would make this substantially safer, especially during periods such as 7pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, when we have a change-over between two junior training sessions and we have 20-30 cars trying to leave the car-park at the same time. I?d be hugely grateful to anyone filling in the consultation form to support the changes, and especially if you could back up my two proposed changes mentioned above. Thank you. David Cook Streatham & Marlborough Cricket Club Juniors (https://sites.google.com/view/smccjuniors/smcc-juniors) and I?m also a local resident who would like to use the junction with my two kids aged 8 and 10 to get to Dulwich Park.
  11. Indoor cricket for boys and girls - a few places still available on Tuesdays starting Oct 9th: 2018-Winter-1 course: 5-6pm, school years 1-2 2018-Winter-2 course: 6-7pm, school years 3-5 See details on our website: https://www.smccjuniors.co.uk/smcc-juniors Kids attending indoor courses will get priority booking for outdoor cricket at the club next summer. We run league teams for school years 3 to 11 and in 2019 we'll be running dedicated girls' teams for years 3-5 and 6-7. From age 13, girls can also join one of our ladies' teams. We're a non-profit community sports club, run by members and parents such as myself, located between East Dulwich and Forest Hill. Please share. Thanks!
  12. Hi folks, Just to let you know that one of our Oct-Dec indoor junior cricket training courses is now full and some others are nearly full, so if you would like to book your kids in to learn and play cricket with us, please book sooner rather than later. Regards, David Cook SMCC Juniors
  13. Hi there junior cricketers and parents, Our 2018/19 indoor junior cricket courses are now open for booking. Details are on our website: https://www.smccjuniors.co.uk/smcc-juniors We're running 10 week courses Oct-Dec 2018 and then again Jan-Mar 2019. Players booked into our indoor courses will, along with returners from last year, get early access to book a place for the outdoor summer season of 2019. We're particularly looking for girls in school years 4-7 as we are planning to run two girls' teams in the summer of 2019 in those age-groups. We have over 20 girls already but will need a few more. David Cook SMCC Juniors (a non-profit community sports club)
  14. We're now up to an average of 16 kids per day booked into the camp and over 20 kids booked in each day in week 1 - a mixture of our members and players new to the club. We have a really good line up of (male and female) coaches and support coaches with a coach to player ratio of around 1 to 7 or better. Week 1 is no longer bookable, but weeks 2-4 are still bookable as before at the link on this page: https://www.smccjuniors.co.uk/smcc-juniors Great to see so many youngsters getting into and enjoying the brilliant game that is cricket. That's what our club is all about. We're not out to make a profit. It's all for the love of the game!
  15. SMCC's junior summer camp now has an average of 13 kids booked in per day. Looking at the bookings, there will clearly be a enough for at least one group of younger soft-ball players and at least one group of older hard ball players on each day. I'm estimating that the camp will have an average of 15-20 players per day by the time they start, so kids may well be divided up into more groups on some days. Our summer camp got great feedback last year and I'm expecting the kids to even more fun this year. Details and link to online booking/payment system are on our website: https://www.smccjuniors.co.uk/smcc-juniors
