Streatham & Marlborough is a non-profit, volunteer-run, community cricket club based between Forest Hill and East Dulwich, though we also play matches in Peckham Rye Park, Mayow Park (Sydenham), South Norwood Lake, and sometimes Hilly Fields. We provide cricket to more than 500 playing members - girls, boys, women and men. In 2023, we organised 482 matches and delivered around 49,000 hours of organised cricket for the local community. Our pavilion is very near the end of its viable life, and we are looking to replace it. A building survey in 2023 reported that the roof, walls flooring and foundations are all in an advanced state of decay, as well as the electricals and plumbing. In 2022, a part of the building collapsed during a storm. The report estimated it would cost over £500,000 to repair, which is not viable. We feel the building needs to be replaced as soon as possible, because if we become unable to use the building, the club would most likely be forced to close down and would be lost forever. The club is investing £125,000 raised by members to complete the design phase of the project, and we have £450,000 in grants towards the construction phase. We are in the process of applying for additional government grants of roughly half a million pounds to make the project happen. We hope the new building will be widely used by other community groups when it is not in use for cricket. For example it would be well suited to yoga, pilates, martial arts, gymnastics, dance, Scouts/Guides, amateur theatre rehearsals...or...you name it! I wrote to our local councillors and am delighted to have received the following response showing how strongly they support the proposal, which I reproduce here with Councillor Andy Simmons' permission... Dear David, Thanks very much for your email. We?ve been campaigning on this for a very long time now and it has been a huge challenge to persuade and cajole Transport for London into bringing forward this proposal for consultation. In the end it took meetings with Sadiq Khan?s Deputy Mayor for Transport and TfL?s Head of Surface Transport to get this moving. TfL have a very strong focus on keeping traffic flowing and have used this issue repeatedly over the years as a reason to refuse to take action. The design that TfL has brought forward involves a two stage crossing with a change in turning priority for westbound traffic on Dulwich Common at the junction. This means that, for example, when pedestrians are crossing halfway from the east side of Lordship Lane towards the Harvester there will be two lanes of traffic turning right from Dulwich Common into Lordship Lane. TfL claim that three straight across crossings would lead to grid lock on the South Circular. We asked for a straight across crossing at each arm of the junction and will include this desire again in our consultation response to Transport for London and continue to lobby for this. Thanks, Sue. Abe and everyone else, please feel free not to mention in your replies to the consultation that there is a bar near the junction (wishing I hadn't mentioned it now!) but the junction certainly is dangerous. TfL always argued that people should walk the 100m or so to the next set of lights, but we all know that in reality hardly anyone does that. The junction ought to be made safe for pedestrians. End of. (Still an expression) :-)

@Abe_froeman, even if you've not had 2-3 pints or glasses of wine, it's a ridiculously dangerous junction. We have over 200 kids of all ages and their parents coming to training and matches every week in the summer, plus 6-7 men's teams and 2 ladies' teams using the club. A lot of us use the junction as pedestrians and it's a potentially fatal accident waiting to happen unless TfL install pedestrian crossing signals. Please support the proposal. Thanks.

TfL are consulting on putting in some proper pedestrian crossings at the junction of the South Circular and Lordship Lane. https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/a205-dulwich-common-lordship-lane/ This is really important to me because it?s right outside the cricket club that I help to run. Many of our secondary school aged players make their own way to and from the club, and this junction has been a real worry for a long time. Even for adults crossing either on their own or with young children it?s a pretty terrifying junction to cross. We also have a lot of adults using the crossing as pedestrians under the influence of alcohol. This includes both senior players after matches and a period of time in the bar, and parents of kids every Friday evening during the summer when we also have the bar open and many parents enjoy a good few glasses of well deserved refreshment. I enquired about this junction to local councillors many years ago and was told that they had already been lobbying TfL (who control the South Circular, not Southwark) for years without success. It is, in my humble view, many, many years overdue that this absolute no-brainer of a safety improvement gets done. In my view, the following two changes should also be made to the proposal: a) Turn the third crossing point (the one nearest the church) into one that has pedestrian signals also. Why would you not? It?s not in the nature of people (especially young people) to walk extra yards in order to use another crossing. They will use the shortest route. I would say it?s a ?must have? that all three crossing points have pedestrian signals. b) Add ?KEEP CLEAR? areas on the road opposite the cricket club and tennis club so that cars can more safely pull out, rather than having to dart out into the moving line of cars. I have been doing this manoeuvre about twice a week for the last four years, and it?s nearly always a case of having to drive into the westbound lane in order to try to get motorists in the eastbound lane to let you in. It is often a slightly hurried and precarious move. A ?KEEP CLEAR? area would make this substantially safer, especially during periods such as 7pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, when we have a change-over between two junior training sessions and we have 20-30 cars trying to leave the car-park at the same time. I?d be hugely grateful to anyone filling in the consultation form to support the changes, and especially if you could back up my two proposed changes mentioned above. Thank you. We have a really good line up of (male and female) coaches and support coaches with a coach to player ratio of around 1 to 7 or better. SMCC's junior summer camp now has an average of 13 kids booked in per day. Looking at the bookings, there will clearly be a enough for at least one group of younger soft-ball players and at least one group of older hard ball players on each day. I'm estimating that the camp will have an average of 15-20 players per day by the time they start, so kids may well be divided up into more groups on some days. Our summer camp got great feedback last year and I'm expecting the kids to even more fun this year. I think we're going to end up with somewhere between 15 and 30 kids per day, which will be really ideal numbers for dividing them into groups, working on some cricket skills and playing some really fun games of cricket. FINAL PUSH PAVILION FUNDRAISER - Sat 16th June, 7:30pm, Streatham & Marlborough Cricket Club Streatham & Marlborough Cricket Club, located between Forest Hill and East Dulwich, and one of the biggest cricket clubs in the area, has for the last 8 years been working towards raising the ?600,000 it needs to re-build its clubhouse. Sport England, the Marathon Trust and the England & Wales Cricket Board have committed around ?400,000 to the project, and they are now looking to raise the final ?200,000 with a view to the build happening the winter after next. Now that more than half of the money is secured, it?s likely that more grant-giving bodies will come on board soon to provide additional funding, but the club is trying to raise as much of the funds themselves as possible. Without the new pavilion, the club faces increasing costs and decreasing hirings, such that it may in the next few years be forced to close. This would be a huge loss to the local community, as the club serves as a sporting and social hub for nearly 1000 local residents, and that?s not to mention many more visitors every year. With the new pavilion, the club is expected to again host a children?s nursery in the daytime, and for many more people to hire the club for cricket games and functions such as private parties and wedding receptions. This extra revenue will secure the future of the club for many decades to come. The club is looking for donors and sponsors. If anyone would like to find out about the project, the club is hosting a ?Final Push Pavilion Fundraiser? this Saturday evening from 7:30pm. There will be food, drinks, live music, presentations about the project by the club?s chairman and guests from Surrey Cricket, and the chance to donate. A similar fundraiser five years ago to kick-start the fundraising effort raised ?40,000 from members and the club is hoping to raise a similar amount this time again. There are several cricket clubs in the Dulwich area that provide cricket for kids - the most local to Dulwich being Streatham & Marlborough Cricket Club (where I help run junior cricket at), Dulwich Cricket Club and Alleyn Cricket Club. At Streatham & Marlborough (despite the name, based between East Dulwich and Forest Hill) we currently take kids from school year 1. We are thinking about running something for kids in Reception, but we don't have that set up just yet. Hi there potential cricket players, JUNIOR CRICKET I help organise junior cricket at Streatham & Marlborough Cricket Club and I?m looking for more kids to play cricket with us this year. The club?s grounds are located between East Dulwich and Forest Hill. Last year we grew from around 100 to 150 kids, and this year we are planning for 200. We have space in nearly all age-groups from school year 1 to 10. We have a great new head coach who started with us last Easter, and this year I?m expecting we?re going to have a brilliant coaching team - many of whom also coach for Surrey and/or London Schools. We are also looking to expand from one all-girl team to two this year. We?re aiming to run Under 9s (up to school year 4) and Under 11s (up to school year 6) teams, so if you know any girls in years 2-6 interested in cricket, we?d love to hear from them. From January to March we have 10 week indoor training running on Tuesdays and Fridays. After Easter, outdoor training will also be on Tuesdays and Fridays (time and day depending on age-group). We will normally have a BBQ going and the bar open every summer training evening. Matches are on Sat and Sun mornings during the summer term.
