Hummy Mummies - a new choir for mums and tots
Yak replied to swannieboy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yep, I was wondering what there will be to entertain the little ones. As much as I love singing and would be keen to come along, if there's nothing to keep my one entertained he will just eat the music! Also an hour is quite a long time to keep them happy and content..... Great idea through - good luck! -
Does anyone have a vapouriser they can lend me tonight???
Yak replied to mrs f's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Do you need a cot.wedge? You can borrow ours if so. Poor baby f! -
Ruth, it was Dr Roscoe, who is just back from mat leave - a good first reserve if the wonderful Dr B isn't available.

We went to the first bugs & butterflies session & had a great time! Although I'm slightly biased as I know Nina (she's godmother to the yaklet!) the session was ram packed with songs, music, dancing & listening. Will definitely be going next week. Details on her advert here http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?6,779986

But it's only a possible risk factor, though, isn't it? For instance, children who are likely to suffer more from colds (and therefore be given paracetamol to relieve symptoms) may suffer from chest infection induced asthma. Correlation doesn't equal causation. The authors point that out by stressing that one may be a risk factor for the other. So while I think it's interesting, I won't be altering how I use calpol etc, at least in the short term. My GP said to me just today she thought people underestimated the usefulness of calpol & that it should be issued at birth!

Jelly babies swimming at peckham pulse - 3pm. -
Yep it's tough for partners because they want to help yet in the very early days you're the milk machine! But there is tons they can do to support you - even very little things like bringing the baby to you at night (if he's not already in your bed)can help. And if you go down the expressing route in a week or two you can get a decentish stretch of uninterrupted sleep at the beginning of the night. Each mouthful of milk = baby growing = bigger stomach = baby fuller for longer = longer between feeds :-)

Shot by the Sheriff guarantee acceptance by the relevant passport agency (i.e. UK, Canada, US etc) and you also get a key fob with a picture. Very cute! Watch out for getting through the big heavy wrought iron doors though - don't be afraid to ask for help.

Next episode is available already on 4 on demand.

Good to see everyone! I vote for the interlopers to organise the next meet up:X Hair of the dog for me today - beer & spare ribs in Brixton village for lunch. I outdrooled the yaklet!

Ok will give it a go - Ruth, if it's not on fancy a playdate? -
Congrats, strawbs! Yes, very normal and nothing to worry about. It will pass! Will the baby sleep on your partner? That way you night be able to get a little kip by yourself. We had great success with swaddling (miracle blanket) and white noise from about day 3 - you can get it free from simplynoise.com. It recreated the noise and comfort of being held securely.

Looking forward to meeting some new faces & familiar ones! I'll be at table 18 from 7.30 - I shall be drinking red wine & reading a book to make me feel less conspicuous while waiting for the troops to arrive......

Thought weaning was supposed to help babies sleep through?
Yak replied to Al&Em's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think round this age they tend to have another development leap / wonder week etc. But I loose track of where we are up to, to be honest - it all seems to blend into one thing after another! Have you introduced protein / complex carbs yet? I found that really helped to keep the little one's tummy fully full, if you see what I mean. Having said that, all has gone haywire today due to a combination of snot, wind and vast amounts of dribbling which I HOPE might mean this blessed tooth might pop through.... -
Hi Katie, and welcome to the area! Tippieietoes (sp?) runs on a Friday at the Gardens Cafe, just off Peckham Rye on a Friday morning - I think Kimmy1980 on the forum runs it and will be able to give you timings. If you're looking for something a little more local, there is bookstart in Camberwell library on Friday mornings which I think has singing at the end of it.... Also from 4th November there will be new music classes starting in Camberwell Baths called Bugs and Butterflies - a very good friend of mine is setting it up so I'll definitely be joing in! Under 18 months is 10 - 10.45, then 18 months plus from 11am onwards. Swimming wise, Peckham Pulse is fab - really warm pool (37 degrees!) but does get busy so it's best to book a slot. I was heartless for the first few months and took the yaklet to Camberwell pool but he lasts twice as long at Peckham and loves all the floats and balls etc. Enjoy exploring the area!

Mooncake, do I sense from your post you're not entirely up for a baby shower? If you don't really fancy organising a big "do" how about just plonking yourself in a pub / bar for a couple of hours and inviting people to drop by? It's lovely that your friends want to spend time with you at such an exciting time of your life - I'd just say that don't feel pressurised into having a baby shower with all that entails (not entirely sure myself as the very idea personally puts me off, but my mental image is of pink babygros, ballons and lots of cooing and oohing etc) if you don't want to. Apologies if I've misread your post or read something into it that wasn't there, but thought I'd shove my tuppence in anyway!

60th birthday present - need some inspiration!
Yak replied to Al&Em's topic in The Family Room Discussion
There's a local lady who makes gorgeous quilts if she's in to that kind of thing? You can contribute a few pieces of fabric that have particular meaning to your mum / your family. I got one made for a friend recently and she was over the moon with it. -
Metanium, Metanium, Metanium. Sudocrem practically caused a chemical burn for us - evil stuff! Also try using a hair dryer on coldest setting to make sure the bottom is bone dry before applying cream & nappy. Good luck - it is horrible!

Calling all mums - what do I need in my hospital bag?
Yak replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Midivydale (and anyone else), if you PM me your email address I can send you a "top tips - the first weeks" note that some friends & I put together. It's about preparations before the birth & the lovely glamorous things about afterbirth (like constipation!) that no-one ever tells you about. Second the suggestion about trying out all equipment & knowing how it works before the baby arrives. If you can have someone standing by you shouting "wah wah wah" in your ear as you try to collapse the buggy or fit the car seat, so much the better ;) -
Calling all mums - what do I need in my hospital bag?
Yak replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
At the risk of sounding a bit anally retentive I would also think about having stuff easily to hand for when you come home AS WELL as hospital bag stuff. Depending on how long your labour is, both you and your partner might be really tired by the time you get home - certainly Mr Yak felt that he was being sent on endless trips round the house for various bits and pieces while I was feeding or the baby was sleeping on me. And when your partner goes back to work there's often no-one around to help! So in the end I had various "stations" set up round the house - in sitting room, bedroom, etc - which each had in them couple of muslins phone charger tv remote (if in sitting room, etc) oatcakes / flapjacks bottle of water wet wipes Then I just plonked me, the baby and my mobile (for all important checking of emails / texts / forum etc) and we were good to go. Also for the bathroom I suggest stocking up on cooking salt and lavender oil for those all important baths to help you heal and relax. -
Sorry to hear you're having such a torrid time. Poor G! How about giving the people at allergy UK a ring? http://www.allergyuk.org/ they may also be able to help e.g on getting a referral? I'm no expert, but the doctor's advice to go for jarred food and suppress reactions if necessary sounds a bit odd to me. I'd have thought it would be important to try foods one at a time (as you've been doing to date) if nothing else to identify trigger foods. Can you even get single ingredient foods in jars? And how's that better than a single ingredient meal you've prepared yourself? Baffling.....
