Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013

Extracts from the report of the Academies Commission 'Planning school places in a diversified system The Commission shares the widespread and serious concerns about planning for school places. We agree with the government that popular and successful schools should be allowed to expand. We note that the current barriers to expansion are often matters of capital spending rather than revenue, and we are concerned that, in some areas, the inability of local authorities to direct academies to expand will create significant problems of supply, since there are few incentives for schools to expand. A local planning function is needed, not only to ensure sufficient places Unleashing greatness ? getting the best from an academised system in the right places ? and certainly to protect provision for vulnerable groups of pupils ? but also to serve the needs of local people. No serious evidence has been presented that operating a local market in terms of school places will provide places where they are needed at the times they are needed. Dr Rebecca Allen of the Institute of Education noted in oral evidence that the market, as presently structured, has no incentives for providers to move into particularly challenging areas. Local authorities retain responsibility for ensuring a supply of sufficient school places. The LGiU?s report (Thraves et al. 2012) expresses some scepticism that the government could secure sufficient school places in every locality without a local partner with local knowledge, connections and influence; its report also questions whether market forces ? the entry of new school providers ? could create, on their own, sufficient school places. The direction of policy since 2005 has been to liberalise school supply by bringing in a range of new providers. Proponents of free market processes argue that where there is a substantial surplus of places, liberalising supply in these areas could empower parents and act as a mechanism for more responsive schooling. However, where there are shortages ? as is increasingly the case in parts of the south east in primary provision ? there are no strong incentives in the system encouraging new supply in those areas where it is most needed. The experiences of early Free School applications confirm this: such applications have not always been closely linked to areas where there is a shortage of school places, and in some places have been located in areas of surplus. Providing incentives for schools to expand is challenging, as Rebecca Allen and Simon Burgess (2012) have pointed out. Some local authorities are using diversification to find imaginative solutions to providing sufficient school places, but there are challenges. No academy can be required to expand its intake. However, there are clear signs that some academies will seek to maintain their current size and so additional school places will need to be met from the smaller number of community schools. The government has recognised some of the perverse incentives in the system and is considering ways of providing incentives for academies to continue to expand; it also draws attention to examples ? which are striking but few ? in which excellent schools (such as Cuckoo Hall in Enfield) have used the academy programme to open new provision. The Commission is not persuaded, however, that the local market, on its own, provides a satisfactory basis for securing a sufficient supply of quality school places in the medium term. -

The fragmentation of school place planning and diversion of resources to free schools rather than on the basis of need, is the underlying reason for the place shortage http://www.standard.co.uk/news/education/looming-crisis-of-118000-pupils-without-a-london-school-place-by-2016-8584430.html -

In 2013 quite a few children from Heber nursery didn't get into Heber reception

Sb, my feelings too as a vendor but where we are looking, the market isn't great We will see, anyway
-
The EA is very predictable. We have now got to the point where I have produced all my evidence why I think x +10k is really the most the house is worth, but 'admitted' it's Also 'our maximum' ( actually it's 5k under what I think is reasonable ) The EA is now trying to wangle the last 5k out of me but have gone silent. I Have also mentioned a Fictional second viewing on our 'second choice' Obv the ea will go through the same process with any other interested parties I will eventually offer the figure I had in mind and ea is currently chasing Will do the trick unless another buyer is prepared to pay more My figure is 93% of asking
-
Good advice, all I contacted the EA to offer 90% They said a cash offer of ?10l more had been rejected, vendor holding out for ?20k more I said what a Shame, can't compete with such an offer from a cash buyer Maybe vendor will think again later as prices are falling We will watch out for any price reduction EA now asking be for our 'full and final offer' I am now playing it cool Will see what tomorrow brings I don't think there really has Been such an offer

Also are you using 1400ppm toothpaste? I believe that is recommended if children seem to be prone or at risk of cavities. Don't despair. It's surprisingly common, I don't think it's entirely related to tooth cleaning efficacy or diet even, some families carry particularly virulent mouth bacteria that seize any opportunity while others seem to be almost immune despite poor dental hygiene and worse diets.

We go to dental Clinique in balham. A forumite is one of the dentists there (I won't out her!) Our family do suffer with teeth and I am afraid several of them have had little fillings. It doesn't have to be a huge deal. Suggest you make an appt for both of you, in the hope he will let them have a look after he has seen you have your own check up?

The time has come for us to move to a bigger house (not in ed, sob) We have looked around a few houses in our intended destination (herts) just to see what's available. The market isn't great there, prices are falling gradually ATM and places often seem to take 6m+ to sell. We saw a house we liked! Though it's on for more than we want to pay (could pay 95% of the asking though) We have a mortgage agreement in principle and are now scurrying to declutter and get our flat on the market (no small feat!) In the meantime I am watching the house like a hawk and worrying its going to be sold to someone else. But if we made an offer of 90% of the asking price, at this stage, I doubt we would be taken seriously at all. Is it worth doing it anyway? Obviously if someone else is prepared to offer the asking price we won't compete with that anyway. But it would be galling if it sells now at the price we have in mind. The particular house has only been on the market for 2 weeks. It's in a very popular road, but is quite expensive compared to much of the surrounding area. Any thoughts/advice? Thanks

Re places on waiting lists, remember many people are on more than one Say there were 30 children desperate to get into schools a,b or c but allocated school d A particular child might be ranked 25th, 28th and 30th for those schools But if 10 places freed up at each school, they would get into one of them! -
